Roundup (glyphosate) is definitely not activated by chlorophyll. The reason you want to keep it off the trunk is that the chemical will be carried through the thin wax cuticle by the surfactants in the mix and then interfere with the shikimate pathway that the plant uses to produce the aromatic amino acids that it needs to make a variety of proteins needed to function.
Those wooden stakes wouldn't hold here in Michigan, they'd rot and/or the tubes would be blown over within a year. Not really long enough to support that height of a tree tube. I've had mostly negative experiences using these translucent corrugated plastic tree tubes, grew a lot of floppy, poor-looking trees using those with many problems hiding behind the tubes. Now I prefer rings of metal fence or diamond mesh photodegradable plastic guards, which I order from Gemplers. Also, chestnuts will do better in sandier soils rather than clay, if you have wet, sticky clay soil, consider planting some other crop besides chestnuts.
I concur with the tree tubes. Here in upstate NY they heat the tree too early and take it out of dormancy when there’s still freezing days ahead and they also create tree that can’t handle wind when the tube is removed
Would you be able to provide info on starting a chestnut tree farm. I am interested in doing something like that and I have heard that you are a great resource. Please let me know if you can. Thanks for the information. Janice P.S How long do you leave the tree guard on?
what does a Dunstan Chestnut leaves look like? I thought I bought a pure american Chestnut, but the leaves dont seem to be as long as all teh photos I have seen
There are no pure American chestnuts that you can expect to not die. These Dunstans are mostly Chinese and not really a quality nut either. We have grown grafted Chinese chestnuts for 30 years and every variety we have (20+) is far superior to a seedling Dunstan.
Tim is correct, Dunstan Chestnut are blight resistant meaning that they are not immune. In our 40 years of supplying orchardists and growers, we have had almost no reports of blight contamination.
Nice job but cost very match for down is good to use the shit off cow or sheep and for up to tree can to use plastic oem.who's tell me anything for this send msg
James, our trees are a hybrid cross between the American and Chinese chestnut. All of our seedling trees come from the original Dunstan Chestnut orchards. We are the only producer of the true Dunstan Chestnut!
Useful, helpful video. Unfortunately the music is tedious and distracting though. Would have been better without any.

Good video!
Still in process of watching and I really like your video and am picking up tips. I wish you would have made it without any music.
Window screen 5ft wide cut to desired size then zipped tied 4 or 5 places will be way cheaper and have similar effect. Good video thanks..
200th like.... ! Thank you for this informative video... I just got over 8 ft chest nut tree for sale... Perfect for my backyard.
awesome video, thank you.
Where can you buy the growing tubes?
That mat you've put on the ground, is that waterproof with the exception of that hole? Could I use an inexpensive tarp and make one?
video content was good but you ruined it by putting music behind it. When doing a talking video, its best to leave background music out.
Horse chestnut trees and plane trees are often planted for ornamental purposes.

Informative video other than the annoying music
Are the Dunstan Chestnut blight resistant?
Dunstan Chestnut trees are the only ones that are blight-resistant, but not immune, to the chestnut blight.
