I like that Yanxi Palace has lots of light-hearted and funny moments, it allows me to relax more than Ruyi's Royal Love which is more dramatic and serious-toned.
The moment with the band and the hat at the beginning were actually kind of cute, and I was grinning the whole time like the guard. It felt ike two bros enjoying a moment together talking fondly about their ladies.
Emperor: this hat is a frivolous waste of time.

I have not watched Ruyi's Royal Love so I can not compare. However this show broke records. During its run it was streamed more than 15 billion times. Distributed in more than 70 markets worldwide, Story of Yanxi Palace has become a huge hit, especially in Asia. It was the most Googled TV show in the world in 2018, despite Google being blocked in Mainland China. This show had it all. It was clear right from the start that the emperor was really taken with this little maid. The excuses he made just to see her were laughable. I don't care if it isn't factually right it was glorious to watch.
