Had a 1997 ls400 and towed a 3000 lb (10 hour drive total )boat thru the mountains cause I knew it was the best built car in the world, it had 350 000'km and didn't burn a drop of oil nor did the oil ever get dirty. Try doing that with a s class. . Lexus IS obsessed with quality... Even if s class is marginally better. Have fun spending thousands on maintenance and repairs. How many trips could I take with all the money I saved driving the more logical car???
Jeremy john Who cares if a car burns oil? It burns tons of petrol, so some more drops of oil don't matter. And maybe you should just visit some poor countrys and take a look if the people there rather drive old german cars or Lexus. Lexus quality better be good, as you will hardly get any parts in many parts of the world.
You can own a W220 S-Class and spend less on it per month than what it takes to run a Camry. There‘s a even a good video about this on RUclips. Lexus is overrated and these „German maintenance cost myths“ are just that - MYTHS. I own a German car from 2007, high mileage and I spend money on fuel and insurance and wear and tear parts. That‘s it. It‘s very reliable and it drives better than any standard Lexus.
you make it sound like lexus never breaks down or is free from repair. lexus dealerships have a service station for a reason. service wouldn't be in business if all they did was oil changes.
@Audi A4 2.5 TDI i know you're talking about the MK1. I had a 1999 IS. You probably bought one that wasn't looked after. They're are so cheap so drifters buy them alot and don't look after them. They are easily the best in its class for reliability and quality. They are definitely not fast that was the problem with them
We own a 2004 Lexus Ls 430 and it is a great car, you can see out of it easily unlike most modern cars, it has many of the features this new one has too including adjustable radar cruise control which will apply the brakes down to 40kph. The seats are heated and cooled and you don't have to get in to a menu to use them, the satnav, aircon, sound etc is one touch of a button away. Hence I don't like the way you have to be looking at the screen in this car to do almost anything even to adjust seats. Even Lexus have succumbed to the small windows and sloping rear. I have looked up the Co-efficient wind drag on this Lexus Ls 500 model and it is not as good as the Ls430 which is 0.26. the new 2018 at its best is 0.27. I have to say from the side the Ls500 looks like a bloated Es300. One thing these Motoring reviews never say is how long that electric motor lasts and costs to replace same thing with the batteries how long do they last and what ids the replacement cost? When you shop for Solar power you can work out the cost / benefit how can you do this with the hybrid cars? I believe electric cars are a great idea and will soon take over and be much better as they have only a few parts to look after but it would be mice to know what the costs over 10 years of ownership would be. Also why do Motoring reviews always go on about the handling? This is Not a sports car if you want one Lexus make them but this is a highway cruiser. I can tell you our Ls 430 sticks to the road like glue and you would have to be driving like an idiot to make it lean to any real extent when cornering. Talk about the ride quality and the NVH, do a proper test with a decibel meter etc.
Not changing designs a lot is really good imo. When they change drastically the old one feels very bad all of the sudden while small improvements makes a car way better since it holds value
For my British friends: It's a shame that you don't get the regular powertrain. The bigger Toyota group engines are a pleasure to drive. They won't program the transmission as effectively in my opinion as Jaguar or BMW, but in the "PWR" mode - a legacy Toyota feature found in all the better models from Toyota/Lexus for years - the 8 and 10 speed transmissions do ok. It's literally a rocker switch. The 8 speed upgraded version in the IS-F and the sport versions of the LS460 (including the 2010-2012, not just F Sport) shifts in half the time of the 8 speed ZF. 100 milliseconds. With the paddles, the transmission rev matches and can downshift through multiple gears and the torque converter locks from 2nd gear plus. The older LS 460 models have sort of the sense of moving effortlessly and quietly although never wanting to jump off the line (e.g. Jag XJ or the BMW 7). I suspect that Lexus programmed and tuned this 500h to feel like the old LS460 in terms of effortless but unexciting acceleration, even if it doesn't sound the same. Remember that in the US where Matt seems to be driving the traditional LS customer is about 60, earns some 400K USD per year, and has owned at least 1 LS before and currently has about 3 cars in his (because most are men) household. I am on my second and buy mine used since I am not in the core demographic. The ES and LS cars are all over Texas and they stay on the road for 15+ years. You would rarely see a 15+ year uplevel BMW or MB in good condition even in states like Texas where the rust is not a problem, at least in comparison to number of ES/LS/RX. RX stays on the road around 20 years unless wrecked. One thing I do find (over the years, not necessarily one model) is that they look a little better in person than on a screen and they tend to grow on you. Some parts are a little cheap on some models, but the well fitted interiors are very pleasant, bank vault like places to be, imbuing a certain sense of confidence. They appeal to people with conservative taste by design, so I am not sure how the latest designs really will work. But I suspect the loyalists still will buy. Their target has always been Mercedes in terms of the core approach. No matter how fast that Merc is, it's still a Merc and has certain characteristics and a good ride. There's a certain utility in a Mercedes and Lexus takes the same view. The difference is that Lexus is way more risk averse and won't give you 100% of anything. So, no, you don't have all the electrical issues found in German cars or Jags. But you don't get 100% of their performance, either. And yes, folks, the newer Germans the US receives do have problems that stripped down, small block diesel taxi versions would not have. The taxi in Germany is not going to be a Designo-fitted V8 E-class AM model with 15K+ Euros in options that start to fail after 50K miles (if not earlier). I see lots of Mercs here in the US with weird electrical issues; a neighbor has a taillight (just 1) that won't turn off! I see a bunch of Mercs with taillights that are mismatched - brake light illuminates on one side when driving down the freeway. Jag, too, because underneath they are half German, even though they ditched Lucas. BMW here has legendary repair bills and not just for VANOS. Torque converters failing early, oil leaks, AC failures, engine management issues....one person I know had a 12K USD engine failure in a sub 100K mile loaded V8 X5. Total failure. Traditionally, the LS requires almost no maintenance whatsoever in the first 100K miles. With only a water pump and for older models the timing belt, and also dealing with the radiator because it's so hot in half the US, an LS easily goes 150K miles with only basic routine maintenance. On my LS430, I replaced an electric cooling fan, a cabin AC servo, water pump, timing belt, 2 door speakers, and the hood/trunk struts. That's it. Sold at 160K miles. Total maintenance with tires, brakes, batteries, repairs, etc. was maybe 6000 USD in the last 100K miles I had it. The starter was starting to go, but that would have been a cheap fix. No oil leaks, no transmission problems, flawless engine performance on synthetic oil. The newer LS models have more complicated suspension which do fail much earlier. I have that now on my LS 460. But that seems to be Achilles heel for all new luxo-barges. So I would urge you to give it a try. Maybe it will appeal to you. And you won't miss the repair bills!
People always comparing Mercedes and Lexus. They forgot Lexus IS known for its godly reliability. Here in the UK MERCEDES ARE bought for the badge but people are starting to realise that they are so overpriced and highly unreliable as many competitors are taking over in certain departments. My mechanic faults the Germans for their reliability as weaknesses are starting to show in their motoring production. Lastly the parts of German cars are 3 times as much as it’s rivals.
right that, BMW ,Audi, MB...badge is everything...but they are definitely overpriced for the quality which they give us..Japanese and Koreans cars are with price fair
Yeah Lexus is more reliable but in every other category the Germans are better. People don't buy them just for the badge, they buy them because they want a nice car.
Nice car but take note of the radar locking at 7:10. Drivers needs to be aware of this out of box situation. The rear display , standard in most luxury cars, reminds me to fasten seat belt while massaging. Don't want to smash into the display during hard braking
Luke Skywalker forgive me for saying that. it was the fail safe that failed it was supposed to pull you to the side of the road if you didn't react to its chimes as the car thinks that you may have fainted but it just kept on steering it to the side almost into a barrier

If Mercedes‘ are so unreliable then people wouldn‘t buy them. They ARE reliable. Some of the things that go wrong are considered WEAR AND TEAR items and there are enough warning signs that you should have them replaced. But so many owners cheapen out on maintenance and then complain when something fails. My old folks own two Mercedes and have been driving Mercedes‘ for decades. These are well-made and very reliable cars if you take care of them. Period.
The truth is that people buying luxury cars or any other prestige items are often not that bothered by all the rational and functional points. They want something that makes them feel good about themselves and a large part of that is other people getting all tingly about it. That's the bit that Lexus never quite managed but as a result of that they make fantastic used bargains for the rest of us !
I think they dropped the ball big time...look how far ahead they were with the hybrid GS450 in 2006? I know it wasn’t a sales success but if they had of kept developing we’d probably have the perfect performance saloon now
this will probably last longer than the the MB S class and the maintenance cost is also much lower The German sure know how to build amazing engines as well as their vehicles but you can't underestimate the Japanese technology and reliability.
One of the things I find annoying about reviewers is it doesn't feel like a Mercedes, Audi or BMW. Good. Why should it? This is not supposed to be a sporty car, it's supposed to be a luxury, relaxing boat. And it isn't supposed to feel German, either. Let Lexus be Lexus. At least they are daring. I could say that about them as opposed to the rather conservative way of the cars auto reviewers invariable constantly mention and it begins to sound like it is what they promote vs. the car that they're reviewing.
Hello. i am from Bulgaria and i love your reviews . What i want to say is that : there are alot of S classes here in Bulgaria (the lastest models) and i happen to know several people who own such a car from the diesel version to the 6.3amg version. The roads here are not so good and one can really test the robustnes of a car. I in fact have driven S class S 500 2017 model for like 2 days and i want to say that : It looks rly good on youtube,it looks really good the first one hour while you are using/driving it,but the moment you kinda get usedto it , you start noticing the cheap places ,the fake leather at some places (or the very vvery thin layers of it ,so thin you can feel unwanted stuff under it ) . About the ride, yea it is good on an excelent to good level of roads ,anithing under that and you feel the bumps lound enough and the ride aint so smooth. And there is the last thing : As i said i happen to know alot of S class owners and i have never hear anyone not complaining about reliability and stuff breaking or error sings on the dashboard ,also some ridiculou things that should happen on a car that is 10 years or 200-300 thousand kilometers on it .It is a well known fact that Mercedess unfortinatelly DO NOT MAKE strong and reliable cars. We know the ridiculous options list and the amazing price difference betwenn seamingly same model cars. We know that as soon ppl actually manage to buy one (riduculously expensive) after 2 years you get a facelift ruining your joy of owning ''the lastest mercedess'' and many more downsides. Lexus on the other hand is a VERY strong ,very reliable car, electronics 100 % perfect ,engine and gearbox right on spot (thou i dont like the whining gear box i had lexus rh400 very strong car 300thounsand kilometers on it and only 2 coilsprings change) Lexus do not overwhelm you with expensive options and endless facelifts and low 100 -200 K kilometers waranty . Lexus is a warrior ,lexus is a good people's car ,lexus is a car i would rely onmy survival ,unlike the pretencions always breaking mercedes-benz (that goes for all their models) Lexus offers something different, polished, attention to detail and really mechanicly and electornically working piece of art ,as Merdecess offers just another piece of overpriced product that noone even turns afrer. I wish all the best do Carwow, keep doing the good that you do :)
huh? lexus being in existence has nothing to do with good looking design. They are in existence because people like their reliability and comfort. No one, and I mean no one, is lusting after a lexus design in the same way a vast majority are lusting after Jag, aston martin, range rover, maserati, corvette, or bmw designs. Literally no lexus owner i know, my parents included, bought the car because of its looks. In fact, my dad refuses to trade in his LS for this new one because of how much he hates the design.
Huy Thai you just named the three ugliest cars in their lineup, minus the rx. And yes, on all honesty, the aztek is starting to look better than some of the ugly ass crossovers we are getting today. Actually, the Mercedes Benz gle looks like it draws inspiration from it Anyway, yes this is a hideous car. I guarantee you it won't sell as well as the s class. Maybe you're right that people will stare, but that's not a good thing. If an s class and a stripped miata pulled up to a stop, more people would stare at the bare bones miata instead, but not cus it's good looking. Do you understand the difference between different looking and good looking??
Huy Thai listen kid, I've had three lexuses (two LS), two acuras, a Hyundai, and a Cadillac in our family. As one of the people who has been a fan of this company in the past, and someone who has studied car design, I am qualified to say that this is actually offensively ugly. Since this new design language, we have no interest in trading in for any of the new Lexus models. I am not definding the Germans either, but the current designs of Audi and BMW (not Benz) will age well we'll all look back on this gen of Lexus the same way we look back on 90s fashion, and say oh God what were they thinking
Huy Thai and you want to complain about the Germans copy pasting their designs while defending Lexus? Lol that's what we call hypocrisy my friend. Not only does this ls copy past the entire Lexus them, it actually steals from the Camry too lol. The rear is straight off a 2018 Camry. Even elements of the front bumper look like the camry
I've been a Lexus owner for 12 years now, and nothing has ever gone wrong or broken. Service them properly and they never let you down. Probably the best cars on the planet.
Lexus is underestimated and should not be overlooked because it simply comes from a different country. This car is superb imo and really looks like a true luxury car and on top of that it has the reliability advantage over the German cars and that speaks for itself because Toyota/Lexus is known world wide for that.
'Is it as good as the German rivals', never heard such crap 😂 'are the German rivals as good as this' more like. Answer no - they're endless money pits that don't hold their value at all. Lexus forever 😁
Better then S Class ? Yes. The design inside and out are just a step above what the S class offers. This Lexus looks futuristic inside and out. You don't look or sit in this car and say it reminds you of another car because it's like nothing else on the road. Same thing goes with the new LC500 coupe. Lexus is on a path to make very unique cars offerings. Also speaking on performance you need to drive the F Sport model as that model is a step above this model in performance. Not to mention it's price much lower and offers the same equipment with more style, better build quality then the Germans. This car is winning.
I’ve driven both. Although the LS is very nice, more reliable, cheaper to own and maintain, its no S class. The S class reminds me of an old school Cadillac with all the new school technology. The LS is nice. The S class wows you when you sit in it.
All the techs and features are almost the same in its class. Mb and bmw are overpriced pos. Dumb people buy them because mainly of the badge. Smart people lease them for a reason. TheClubshaker absolutely not true.
Hasan Al-habbobi Absolutely is true. Spot on, in fact!
TheClubshaker Obviously hes arguing for higher end German cars, as far as I'm concerned low-mid class cars don't care for quality like ur volkswagon
That's car is the flagship of Lexus so you have to compare it with cars of the same class in VW group there are just the a8 and panamera or some Bentley's you can't compare that to Jetta or a Passat even if they are well made
TheClubshaker we have to be objective when talking cars I agree

The interior is very well made indeed in terms of materials and craftsmanship but the design is too busy.

Sirion very good answer.
Christian W I own a 2007 LS460L with about 94k miles and it runs like new. I haven't had one repair done yet.
I bought a ISF 3 years ago now I know why Lexus are just so good , love it.
@Audi A4 2.5 TDI I disagree, i had one for a year, very well made car, will last longer than your audi. I have a Lexus V8 now. Next level quality
This car looks sleek for such a big car, loving Lexus styling and quality these days. Well done Lexus!

That's why I love Japanese cars
Yeah but Europeans prefer to buy their own brands instead of Japanese anyways
right that, BMW ,Audi, MB...badge is everything...but they are definitely overpriced for the quality which they give us..Japanese and Koreans cars are with price fair
Yeah Lexus is more reliable but in every other category the Germans are better. People don't buy them just for the badge, they buy them because they want a nice car.

The truth is that people buying luxury cars or any other prestige items are often not that bothered by all the rational and functional points.
I in fact have driven S class S 500 2017 model for like 2 days and i want to say that :
It looks rly good on youtube,it looks really good the first one hour while you are using/driving it,but the moment you kinda get usedto it , you start noticing the cheap places ,the fake leather at some places (or the very vvery thin layers of it ,so thin you can feel unwanted stuff under it ) .
About the ride, yea it is good on an excelent to good level of roads ,anithing under that and you feel the bumps lound enough and the ride aint so smooth.
And there is the last thing :
As i said i happen to know alot of S class owners and i have never hear anyone not complaining about reliability and stuff breaking or error sings on the dashboard ,also some ridiculou things that should happen on a car that is 10 years or 200-300 thousand kilometers on it .It is a well known fact that Mercedess unfortinatelly DO NOT MAKE strong and reliable cars.
We know the ridiculous options list and the amazing price difference betwenn seamingly same model cars.
We know that as soon ppl actually manage to buy one (riduculously expensive) after 2 years you get a facelift ruining your joy of owning ''the lastest mercedess'' and many more downsides.
Lexus on the other hand is a VERY strong ,very reliable car, electronics 100 % perfect ,engine and gearbox right on spot (thou i dont like the whining gear box i had lexus rh400 very strong car 300thounsand kilometers on it and only 2 coilsprings change)
Lexus do not overwhelm you with expensive options and endless facelifts and low 100 -200 K kilometers waranty .
Lexus is a warrior ,lexus is a good people's car ,lexus is a car i would rely onmy survival ,unlike the pretencions always breaking mercedes-benz (that goes for all their models)
Lexus offers something different, polished, attention to detail and really mechanicly and electornically working piece of art ,as Merdecess offers just another piece of overpriced product that noone even turns afrer.
I wish all the best do Carwow, keep doing the good that you do :)

bu56 literally the two ugliest cars in the luxury segment
huh? lexus being in existence has nothing to do with good looking design.
Actually, the Mercedes Benz gle looks like it draws inspiration from it
Anyway, yes this is a hideous car.
I am not definding the Germans either, but the current designs of Audi and BMW (not Benz) will age well
we'll all look back on this gen of Lexus the same way we look back on 90s fashion, and say oh God what were they thinking

This car is winning.
the new S class is better though

Not Volvo s90. Volvo s90 competes with Audi 6, Mercedes E, Lexus ES. It's not big enough to compete with these other vehicles.

But I love that they just say no pure petrol or diesel engines. It’s very refreshing to see, even if I would prefer them to go EV or range extended EV.
And that HUD is incredible.
The back seats though. I've never seen an S-class be able to do that.
That Lexus looks futuristic
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I’ll have one over the Mercedes’ bmw and Audi any day !
I really love the specs of that car
I will skip the review now, i will watch it the next 12 years !!
That rear-seat reclined full-body massage... wow, that's something special
Was at the dealer today....different, presence. The front grill is crazy. I would preferred his over an S class and a 7.
Hahaha

LEXUS..is the king of cars..reliability, initial and long term quality, and flawless refinement.
lexus is maintenance less
That's a matter of opinion. It'll never top the Germans or British. Lexus is a lower class.
@@theone5404 Well, your opinion has already been dismissed by the greater automotive press and experts. Lexus is at the top of every list. Now, if we are talking of the 2 year leases and off to the newest model lifestyle?? for which the richest classes do... then quality, durability, and resale are irrelevant. Lexus still wins even within these first 2 years, as do the new crop of Genesis...but the tripled-up price points give the Germans and British more leather and luxe items to break down and come unhinged within 2-3 years. Initial and long term are 2 giant classifications on the automotive product scale.
@@damonlee226 all that crap a bias for Toyota. Please. This is the real world, especially outside the simple US.
@@theone5404For the eighth straight year, Lexus tops the 2019 J.D. Power U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, followed closely by corporate sibling Toyota, which this year shares the #2 spot with German automaker Porsche. Rounding out the top five in this annual tally of the most reliable cars are Chevrolet and Buick.Feb 15, 2019
Why don't they offer it in a classic V8?!
Fucking EPA regulations.
this car has the most important thing while paying so much which is it feels special which the germans dont have
@Carwow you were in Oman 😅... I have lived there for 17 years till i shifted to Dubai
How come UK cars won’t have the option of the 415 hp twin turbo V6?
I really don't get why they don't get the normal petrol engine, that drives as good as any German top luxury flagship. The hybrid can never be as good as a twin turbo 415 hp with 442 NMT.
Samson Okoro I think you mean 442 *lb-ft* or *600* Nm?
Josh Bacon that is lame. I say the same thing with the CHR that we get that has a horrible petrol, no AWD, and no HID headlamps
442 ib-ft
Josh Bacon its Newtonmeters or Nm and not NMT. Thats just wrong.
I've been a watcher of ur channel for a while now and I just came across this video of LS 500h and I realized this was shot in Oman. I'm a resident in Oman currently and was then when the video was being shot. I wish I knew then so I could say hello and priase u for ur informative and entertaining reviews. Bad luck. Maybe next time. 😊
I have Mercedes E class 2016 and Lexus GS 2017...lexus is much quieter than the E class. The sound insulation in Lexus is unbeatable .
True.
So you are comparing an outgoing model with a new one great job buddy...
Saif Ali I personally like nice a motor with noise, if your e class is a v8
it better be loud
Yeah, one could clearly hear it at 02:00.
E Class 2017+ is much nicer though
