This is genius. They've designed for better replayability by creating a plot device that can account for the player's memories of prior playthroughs, basically making it a feature! I suspect this will actually make later playthroughs better than earlier ones, because you won't have to just imagine feeling your character's dejavu.
Oh I hope they come back and do a playthru of this one! Like, a good follow up for after Spiritfarer wraps up a little later on, that would be awesome!!!
Okay, so I know this is sponsored, and maybe doing a whole playthrough is a difficult prospect, but I'd watch the heck out of you (and/or Carrie) playing this whole thing! Like I'm def getting this and playing it myself, but your perspective is great and I would love to see how your playthrough differs from mine.
Let's just say, I played through the game (once) and while I haven't seen everything. I'd bet it doesn't pull any punches from its content list. So, I understand why it wouldn't fit well on playframe.
as a rule I love your sponsored content. Always introduces me to games I have never heard of that I am interested in. I'm glad people reach out to you about this and you respond with these episodes.
👀I must see more of this I know in your spirit farer play you were talking about what to do next, and if Carrie is down this looks like it could be a fun sunday play to continue.
First of all this game is gorgeous, I'm stunned by the unique but familiar feel accomplished. Well done devs! Second of all: Dan and Carrie, y'all need to know that one of my professors absolutely adores Extra Credits' history portion. I know that's not your jam anymore but we essentially watched all of the John Snow episodes in class and I had a goofy smile on the whole time. You're both a true blessing, please stay hale and whole

@@Gamyeon I feel much the same way. That game gets heavy, and...I don't want to say it's political, all art is political, but it's tough to play Disco Elysium without wearing your politics on your sleeve.
14:34 Just a little note, though I'm sure someone else has mentioned it already, the word "aubergine" (French origin, pronounced kind of like "oh-ber-zheen") is another word for a vegetable you might be more familiar with as an "eggplant". It's in common usage outside of the US. Aside from that, this game looks really interesting. Really loving the trans representation here, it always warms my heart to see good representation.
Tammy's like, "If I take one more step, Solana, it'll be the farthest I've ever gone from the ship since we landed." It's like the writers watched the Super Metroid/Link to the Past Randomizer series. And, as several commenters have remarked, "aubergine" (OH-bear-zheen) is the French (and, therefore, British) word for eggplant.
12:10 wait one of those stars is BLUE, thats a terrible place to colonize, that stars gonna nova in a few million years, why would anyone EVER settle there?
I mean, human civilization have only been around for 15,000 years or so, if this us even far future I'm sure they'd move past this world way before the star would expand much less nova.
@@essneyallen6777 Which probably tells you something about the local dynamics. It seems like we're orbiting close to the other star, while the blue one hangs out at a distance from both planet and star. The other more-or-less stable option is having the stars pretty close together, and the planet orbiting the pair at a distance, but you need something pretty energetic to provide enough heat for liquid water on a planet like that...
The art and colors are stunning. I love the weird comic book parallaxing in the opening cutscene. Reminds me of the interactive comic panels in Gravity Rush.
Yes, the game remembers what events all of your characters experienced. And each time you start, your new character can act of what you, the player, learned from previous playthoughs.
Thank You, Dan, for showing off what appears to be a truly great role-playing experience. You may also want to check out Citizen Sleeper and Sacred Fire
I started watching this with no idea what this game was.. fell in love with it immediately.. bought it, played through it twice, and came back to finish the video. Wow do I love this game, thank you so much for pointing out its existence to me and best of luck with your playthrough(s).
Oh man, I freakin' LOVE this game! I spent my country's whole Independence Day celebrations just chugging away at this game; the only time I stopped was because I needed sleep, hah!😆 EDIT: S P O I L E R S All right, for those of you wondering what's going on at around 55:10, your player characters remember decisions and events from your previous games. The really neat thing is that you don't have to finish a playthrough before starting a new game (as you can see here. After all, Dan didn't/couldn't finish a whole run in an hour and change) . That said, I'm not sure if simply loading an old save will allow you to change things up, or whether you need to start a new game to do so. I admit it's entirely a 'me' problem, since I love playing this so much I can't help but finish a playthrough before starting anew ☺ EDIT 2: Whoops, I forgot- another thing that persists through games are your friends' birthdays as well as their likes and dislikes, which I love for the heartwarming implications!
I dig how this has a trans character from the jump and just blows through it all in the most calm matter of fact way and highlights it, but doesn't make it their only story in the character bio. It's a very thoughtful thing and I love how it was so normal about the whole thing that you'd almost miss it XD.
I love how representation is improving. Also, it might be a silly small detail but, the small hints at what gene editing might allow trans people in the future to do. My heart was melting with hope for future generations. (Not that that in particular is realistic but, the idea in general)
My deckbuilding game instincts are telling me that you probably want to dump low-value cards when you get the opportunity to. Since you only draw a limited number of cards from your deck, you'd want the best chances to get your better cards, especially if the challenges are going to get tougher over time.
I don't think the "save tammy" thing comes up on your first playthrough - it certainly did not on mine. Interesting that the game lets you new game+ even if you start a new playthrough before finishing another. It probably means you won't get "from a past life" choices during later points in the story, though.
From a past life means you've seen this scene in another save. You can clear the data in the options menu, but obviously you wouldn't have been able to save her then. The game functions in a collective memory system - including a path where you can figure out why.
Lots of games have done this sort of meta-narrative thing, especially visual novels and VN-adjacent games, but that's just because there's a lot of interesting ways to use that narrative device.
19:19: Wait, the kids were born on Earth, and left when they were old enough to remember stuff? I thought they were born on the Stratospheric, and that's why Solana thought thought it was weird and Tammy didn't want to leave the ship. 37:00: Does Solana not remember Earth after all?? 54:45: Same as in any deckbuilder. Getting rid of weak cards means you're more likely to draw the good ones. Or if you have too many of one kind and get rid of it, you're more likely to draw a more balanced hand. (Or _less_ balanced, if you're going for all reds or something.) 5:40: The graphical tech here is simple, but the art direction _more_ than makes up for it! 7:00: What kind of parent(s) name their kids Dys and _Tangent?_ 7:20: Tangent's design is _way_ better than her name, though. 9:50: Corn is a _grain,_ you twerp! 33:25: I love that little detail. It's a good game. 40:10: And Tangent is a good character. Better than her name, that's for sure. 57:10: "And then Tammy died" is...quite the thing to just drop on us.
I think he said it like obber-gene (rhyming with 'robber' and 'bean'). I think it's more commonly oh-ber-gene (rhyming with 'slow', 'sir' and 'bean', but with a soft g) in the UK - or with my middle-class accent anyway.
As someone who has reading comprehension problems but doesn't want to let my issues limit me from a great experiences I've found 2 things that have made my experience better. 1. Have voice actors. I realize that can be time consuming and expensive. 2. Offer a slider to increase text size or have larger letters with multiple pages and a icon or number indicating how many. Don't have a long message that you have to scroll down. How often do you see a long comment and choose to read it like the one I am creating now? lol.
Hm, interesting. Caught myself strategizing what I'd do in my own playthrough while watching Dan, and now I kinda want to see how that strategy works. Got a few other games going on now. I'll put it on my wishlist for later. Maybe there'll be a sale.

I think I'd rather have known that the end was significantly different, rather than the details of Tammy's death. Regardless, I'm going to pick this up and play with the character I decided on before that point. I'm going to worry that either there is no right choice and multiple characters die unavoidably, or Tammy was the right choice and I didn't make it.
