Vibrato goes in the direction of gravity... Cello/Bass will initially fall forward and then rebound to center; Violin/Viola, the hand will fall back and then rebound to center (hence Rolland's observation of Starker's motion). I remember many discussions that I also had with Mr. Rolland about this very thing, although I was but a high school student and at the time--full of myself; the "know-it-all." But, as I've lived on, I am convinced that shoulder instruments' instinct is opposite of that of floor instruments' instincts simply because the direction of gravity.
He was my teachers teacher!
Same!
4 out of 5 masterclasses i've had in my life, all of them studied under him too! and my actual cello teacher's teacher's teacher was rostropovich :D
And he is technically my great cello grandfather, hahaha. My teacher’s now teacher studied with him.
