This is actually the traditional way that chickens were raised for example in the Middle Ages when ordinary couldn’t afford to feed their chickens grain, they would provide the chickens with shelter, water, and a little bit of food, but other than that the chickens were expected to find their own food.

I can tell by the background that your chickens get plenty of iron😄

I love your video! I free range my chickens too(about 40 and hatching more). They have 4 acres of pasture, but they still chase me every day until I feed them with the bagged feed I buy from our local feed store. Where can I get the wheat, Oats, and other raw grain from?

You can get that stuff from a feed store. Not box stores.

Thank you 🙏 very much for sharing this video. Very informative and as a new chicken farmer 👨‍🌾 of ten baby chicks 🐤 can see that they like to eat.
Appreciate you taking out the time describing how much food they really eat in a day. We have road island reds beautiful 😍 birds. Forgot to mention your turkey 🦃 that may have been a meal 🥘 already beautiful bird.
We have our chickens 🐓 for the eggs great reminder about the oyster shell 🐚. Free range definitely is the way to go and supplementing. Outside of their regular chick food food purchased them some millet and flax seed. Have to look into the fish meal really high in protein.
Keep up the great work we started putting up our chicken coop as well. They are 5 weeks plus now. Take care!

Supplement their diet with feed. But don’t over supplement. During the winter you’re going to have to be their source of food pretty much 100 % depending on where you live. During the spring and summer, cut back. Chickens are freeloaders. If the feeders are always full, that’s where you’ll find them. I cut back 50% on feed during the spring and summer. If I notice a change in egg production I’ll add more. It’s really trail and error until you figure out your chickens habits and needs. Hope this helps.

that helps immensely. I thought they were starving but they free range all day and have 3 acres here. Someone in the comments wrote everyone likes a hand out. that's pretty funny and true I'm sure with these chicks. We live in Alberta, Canada. It gets REALLY cold here and they definitely wont find food in the winter. I appreciate your channel. we're staying with a friend and have fallen in love with chicken life. They are hours of fun and action, especially for our 4 kids 😊

If u haven’t tested the wheat, it may not be 14% protein, I’ve seen it from 6.9 to 17%, avg is 10-11%
