When I was a six-year-old a long time ago, listening to this with my dad, I had no idea what this truly meant. He tried to explain it to me, and I understood that the girl had died and the man was grieving her, but I didn’t understand how someone could die of a broken heart, or how hitting the edge of her window had anything to do with the song. When I was young, and small, and naïve, my dad made me promise to never kill myself. I was flabbergasted. Why would anyone want to do that? I couldn’t wrap my little six-year-old head around why he was making me promise this. There was no way I’d ever do such a thing, right? Well, I obeyed his promise, for years and years, and then one day when he’d had too much to drink, he started talking about howmy mom and I could do better without him and that he should just die. My heart broke, and I frantically reminded him of the promise he made me keep and that he had to do it, too. He just looked at me with broken eyes before whispering, “ok.” I don’t know if he was actually going to do that or not, but I am so glad he made me promise that. Because of him making me promise to keep living, I was able to do that same for him.

I get it now. He's the one headlight. The other headlight is the girl who died. So in his mind the car would symbolize their relationship, thus connecting the two lights. He can't move on without her. So he feels that the only way to move on is if part of her stays with him. It's almost as if he's talking to the part of himself that he desperately wants to believe contains her spirit. Very sad

Love this song & I deeply identify with it. Recently, I tried to "check out" of this life I could no longer bear. So grateful it went so wrong & I didn't succeed. I had to hit rock bottom to try it & I did but now? Now I can some light at the end of tunnel & I have hope. I yelled it at my husband, my friends that were here. I couldn't take anymore. The weight of everything has taken a toll on me. Molestations & repeated, terrible rapes for a year at the age of 12, the trauma of that & my mother who didn't believe me & almost killed me for it. No one that cared at all about me. Too much alcoholisn I had seen in my life & what it did to me, my siblings, my entire family on both sides. Caring for a terminally ill daddy for 10 years & losing him. Caring for my mother who also died. Then taking care of my own son for three years before he died, too & that took the biggest toll of all. The last straw was being shocked out of my grief to care for my husband that had a stroke. I didn't have much left to give him & I tried so hard to care for him. I still am. Life is cruel, life isn't fair, I see it all now. I can't live in the past any longer & will do my best not to again. Why am I writing all this? Not sure why .... Maybe it's a catharsis of sorts. Maybe I had to write it all down for people that don't know me & will probably never read this. That's not the point... Not really. I'm doing this for me, I guess. Saying goodbye to everything that hurt, loving the Lord who saved me... Again! And again! Serving Him now..... Giving Him control of my life until it's really time to go. 🙏❤️🙏❤️

I can see this song as being about suffering from depression. Losing a friend, which could be interpreted as normal feelings, to a "broken heart disease." They mention being unable to break away from the parade, or the disease, and that there has to be an opening, a way out of the maze of ugliness and greed. The "sun up ahead" of the county line, and there's a bridge to it, to a healthy mind. The person sees this as a sign that "all is good" and nothingness, which depression always feels like, will die when they reach it. Unfortunately they try and fail, hitting the window ledge, which can be seen as the barriers we put up around us with depression, never leaving our homes. The "engine doesn't turn" and the mess is something they could watch burn, and go away. When you're depressed you lose yourself and don't feel yourself (feel like somebody else). Then they mention the city walls of "dying dreams," the feeling of hopelessness. "Her death" is not somebody else, it's the speaker talking about their own inner death. But the positive comes from the main verse, claiming there's got to be something better than "in the middle," which is a way to view depression. It isn't sadness or happiness, it's the middle. It's nothingness. And they claim to "try a little" to make it through, to drive "home." And to do it is not easy because one headlight represents not being 100%, but still having just enough power to push through and keep on living.

He can't move on without her. So he feels that the only way to move on is if part of her stays with him. Love this song & I deeply identify with it. Recently, I tried to "check out" of this life I could no longer bear. So grateful it went so wrong & I didn't succeed. I had to hit rock bottom to try it & I did but now? Now I can some light at the end of tunnel & I have hope. I yelled it at my husband, my friends that were here. I couldn't take anymore. The weight of everything has taken a toll on me. Molestations & repeated, terrible rapes for a year at the age of 12, the trauma of that & my mother who didn't believe me & almost killed me for it. No one that cared at all about me. Too much alcoholisn I had seen in my life & what it did to me, my siblings, my entire family on both sides. Caring for a terminally ill daddy for 10 years & losing him. Caring for my mother who also died. Then taking care of my own son for three years before he died, too & that took the biggest toll of all. The last straw was being shocked out of my grief to care for my husband that had a stroke. I didn't have much left to give him & I tried so hard to care for him. I still am. Life is cruel, life isn't fair, I see it all now. I can't live in the past any longer & will do my best not to again.
Why am I writing all this? Not sure why .... Maybe it's a catharsis of sorts. Maybe I had to write it all down for people that don't know me & will probably never read this. That's not the point... Not really. I'm doing this for me, I guess. Saying goodbye to everything that hurt, loving the Lord who saved me... Again! And again! Serving Him now..... Giving Him control of my life until it's really time to go. 🙏❤️🙏❤️

90's offered some really decent music, this is a good example. But, I'm still partial to the 80's styles it was in my teen years, I suppose that's why??? However when this song came out, I was shocked, I would indeed compare it to the 80's stuff for sure, really good catchy tune.
I can see this song as being about suffering from depression. Losing a friend, which could be interpreted as normal feelings, to a "broken heart disease." They mention being unable to break away from the parade, or the disease, and that there has to be an opening, a way out of the maze of ugliness and greed. The "sun up ahead" of the county line, and there's a bridge to it, to a healthy mind. The person sees this as a sign that "all is good" and nothingness, which depression always feels like, will die when they reach it. Unfortunately they try and fail, hitting the window ledge, which can be seen as the barriers we put up around us with depression, never leaving our homes. The "engine doesn't turn" and the mess is something they could watch burn, and go away. When you're depressed you lose yourself and don't feel yourself (feel like somebody else). Then they mention the city walls of "dying dreams," the feeling of hopelessness. "Her death" is not somebody else, it's the speaker talking about their own inner death.
But the positive comes from the main verse, claiming there's got to be something better than "in the middle," which is a way to view depression. It isn't sadness or happiness, it's the middle. It's nothingness. And they claim to "try a little" to make it through, to drive "home." And to do it is not easy because one headlight represents not being 100%, but still having just enough power to push through and keep on living.
