I used the J37 on nearly every track of my album released in 2020. It opened up my sound and provided detail and clarity. I used the Gullfoss EQ in front of it before taking the mix to the limiter. Sounded so good.
I just got Gulfoss EQ I haven’t had a chance to mess with it yet though. Def will try this weekend. Yeah I still haven’t found a tape emulation I like better. I’m sure there are some but this one just has a sound I enjoy a lot!

Small correction about the 888 811 and 815. They are the different tape formula blends EMI made which each have their own unique EQ response. When you click them you will notice the tape reel changes colour. Its not a different version of the machine which has always been the J37.

Hi when you mentioned the quick eq to roll off highs and lows beside the Delay section, does that eq the delay only or the whole input signal plus all of the plugin sections processing? good run through thanks
It affects the delay path only. Keep in mind if using it on the insert of the audio it will affect everything there vs a send where you’re blending the processed signal with the original audio signal.
Very nice tutorial (the best I have seen of J37) but I think you have to set the same volume (LUFS measurement) when You compare then the differences become small (now they are very obvious).
Sounds like you might be talking about the noise level or possibly the saturation. You an turn those down to off and see if that helps. I’d have to see it to know exactly what the issue could be.
Matt Montanez I think it’s probably how the song is recorded. The song sounds good but when I put the J37 it gives it a lot of highs you can hear a lot of Sss on the vocals and hi hats
Hmm. Only other thing I can think of is try switching the speed to 7.5. 15 does give better highs while 7.5 will reduce them to keep the low end tighter. Also try the 811 which will be the least colored. Then adjust the In. Let me know if that helps. Good luck
Dude, thanks so much for your content. Really helpful. Quick question: when explaining the 2+3, you say that it allows you to process left and right channels separately - you refer to this as multi mono. Would this not just be stereo? For instance, on several of my waves compressors, in stereo mode, the left and right faders bounce independently. When I switch to multimono, both channels are processed the same. So wouldn’t the 2+3 be stereo mode?
You’re welcome. Thank you for tuning in. Yes it is buuut stereo is usually linked so parameters are exactly the same and processed the same for the left and right side. Multi mono you can change the left side and the right side so they are processed differently. So in the 2+3 the left side is being read separately from the right. If the right side is more bass heavy for example it’ll be processed more than the left. If you just had stereo and it’s linked it doesn’t matter if the right is more bass heavy they will be processed identically. Hope that clears that up some for you. 👍🏽

To answer your question, it doesn’t matter it just depends on how your routing is done within the DAW. A more thorough explanation. I’m not too familiar with logic. Only used it a handful of times but this should be for any daw. Every kind of track you make is essentially the same thing. Except some small differences, for example, an aux track (bus track) is the same thing as an audio track (channel strip) except you can’t enable record in the bus track. And the same thing th goes for all the tracks with the daw they are all essentially the same. Besides the master because that is the only one you can’t set an input for. Everything else you can route audio through it the same way and it shouldn’t affect the signal at all.
I am new to this system and really want to have some knowledge about it . I have it in my system with a reaper, but I don't really know how to properly use it to record music. I am a guitar player and would like to record my music.
Slight correction here. The formulas aren’t different versions of the J37, they are different versions of recording tape. Each recording tape version had different properties which gave songs a specific sound..
It should be tested with plugin doutor... ...or maybe print a copy and invert phase and play with the original. Maybe we could really see that the sound is almost not changing at all...
I def need to try that. That's the beauty of mixing is that there aren't really any rules so if it sounds good to you then you did something right! Other people may start doing that. The way I show in the video is the way I use it and I will say is the most common. 👍🏽
What are you confused with? Maybe I can explain a bit more than what my video does. Also keep in mind. This is a harmonics plugin. Put it in something and if it sounds good you did it right. All it’s going to do is add a little color and texture to the audio. Less is more with the plugin.
I was going to watch/listen to this video, but I just can't bring myself to listen to that 'R&B' autotune/melodyne/whatever crap man.. I'm sure it's a cool plugin though!
All good. The sound is definitely not for everybody. The client sent his vocals in that way as that’s his sound he wanted. I’ll try and get around to doing an updated video with a different song
you really describe your feelings about this j 37 tape and different ways to use it for music. In reality, you never explain how can someone download music or how to record instruments like a guitar or a piano. you only show how to mix sound. Even the manual shows the same mistake, everyone talks about the beauty of it but not how really to use it. please show how to record music as I asked.
Yeah for the most part but that’s a good thing if the producer hears it and likes it and the listener doesn’t then you did your job right. The listener shouldn’t be able to distinguish your processing. They should just know it sounds good. Processing should be subtle.

Yeah for the most part but that’s a good thing if the producer hears it and likes it and the listener doesn’t then you did your job right. The listener shouldn’t be able to distinguish your processing. They should just know it sounds good. Processing should be subtle.
Great stuff! thanks
