    I'm wondering how many of the people criticizing Rickson have said it to his face.

      +John Mason, I'm thinking zero. Not because he's gonna start something (he's not), but because they really don't believe what they're saying enough to say it to his face. My 2 cents.

    I enjoy listening to your videos and dig the bjj zen philosophy. I train with Professor Akins in LA and love the self defense mindset. Keep up the good work sir!

    How does anyone disrespect Rickson? I don't know the particular story you are talking about but you have to respect who came before you.... He is a living legend no matter how you look at it.

    Well said. I actually had a falling out with a former instructor of mine because he disrespected the Gracies. Without the Gracies people in the U.S. would still think karate and Kung fu works and Ninjas are real. IMO the sport of BJJ has done FAR more to harm Jiu-jitsu than help in the last 15 years or so.

      I was tempted for a moment to point out everything wrong with what you said. But I'm going to assume you are a white belt who has found himself in one of the anti-Gracie sport cult BJJ dojos. You just don't know any better. Give it a few years and you may understand.

    I stay faaarrr away from all the politics. I started gracie jiu jitsu last week and I am absolutely hooked. I don't talk about it outside of class and I don't ever want to become the guy who never shuts up about it. I do it for myself and my own well being, no other reason. I love this channel and enjoy hearing you speak on these matters. Keep it up! maybe one day I'll be able to come say hi in person. I have a question, How can i keep the beginning 36 combatives from getting stale or boring?

    • @tusccountyjiujitsu
      @tusccountyjiujitsu 7 лет назад +1

      Joshua Howard once you learn them the best way to keep them from becoming boring is to train them live. Start combining them together, look for different variations.

      drill the self defense for warm ups (combatives), if you know the concepts of guard mount etc you should be able to adjust from punches to grabbing the gi....
      ask urself, can u defend urself in guard with strikes..... then transition from striking to grabbing , i.e. the collar, sleeves grips etc.... jiujitsu is jiujitsu....

    In my opinion you CAN measure Rickson in the JJ that he represents which is the self defense one. He did it himself by competing across all the styles of martial arts ( including high level of JJ ) and his track record seems to show that he succeded in proving his superiority.

    Awesome Video. With all the time I have been spending drilling at open mats and going to classes I don't think I have time to keep up with the drama. However, I am guilty of clicking on the odd article link from time to time. I like Jiu jitsu a lot, so I would rather be doing it than reading about it on the internet.

    Sometimes i'm amazed when i remember that Rickson's only a second generation Gracie - with the development of Ryrion, Rener, Rickson, Rolls etc etc etc it makes me think he's like a 5th generation. It's incredible what the Gracie's have done in such a short period of time, it blows my mind

  • @jwillard911

    Think Pedro Sauer was one of the super few if not only that went white to black under Rickson. Pedro is my teachers teacher. Outstanding knowledge!!

    • @KamaJiuJitsu
      @KamaJiuJitsu  7 лет назад +2

      +Jaime Willard although he was awarded the black by Rickson, I thought he was first a student of Helio. Kinda like how Fabio Santos was first a student of Rolls. But I could be wrong.

    • @jwillard911
      @jwillard911 7 лет назад +1

      Not sure. He was one of the early ones. I remember him telling story of Him and Rickson being very good friends and talked him into coming to class one day to see Helio and the rest is history. Not pos but think he got his black belt from both Helio and Rickson. He did say he was one of only so many that got his Black from Helio. I have been none to be wrong though. He has some great stories.

      @Kuba405 5 лет назад +1

      @@KamaJiuJitsu Correct, he started under Helio, but always alongside Rickson. Rickson talked him into starting GJJ and kept him motivated even when he was getting crushed by bigger, stronger guys.

    This was an interesting video, but it was speaking of politics in a different sense than I expected.
    About a year ago, I started training in a no-gi style of jiujitsu. Before beginning, I had what I imagine were common concerns. Was I too old (I am 53)? I work nights in an extremely physical job (I am a package handler at UPS), and I wondered if my hours and exhaustion would get in the way. And these factors did contribute to my eventually leaving the gym. But, truth be told, the real problem was politics. Specifically, the vibe in this gym was insanely right-wing. And it was loud, and proud, and in my face with it every single day.
    Now, I understand different people have different political views. I have no problem with that. But the people at this gym all seemed to think the same, and they spent huge amounts of class time ranting about politics. They all loved Trump. They all hated Biden. They all loved cops and the military, and hated feminists, BLM, teachers, trans people, and a host of others they considered "woke." Which seemed to be pretty much everyone to the left of Trump.
    But the worst part was their crazy conspiracy theories about Covid-19. I got Covid-19 in May of 2020. It knocked me flat for three weeks. I suffered a non-stop fever, headache, body aches, intense fatigue, and a cough so dry it felt like I had sand stuck in my throat. I lost 9 pounds in 14 days despite hardly ever getting out of bed due to the nonstop sweating. Luckily, I recovered. But my wife's aunt died of Covid-19 the following July. A coworker lost her father-in-law. Another coworker lost her brother. An older man in my building died. The guy who owned the Mexican restaurant down the block died. Half a block further down, a local firefighter died. My cousin ended up in the hospital with Covid. A guy who works with my brother and his son both ended up on ventilators. It was horrible.
    And yet, everyone at jiujitsu laughed about it. They all thought Covid-19 was no big deal, part of a big liberal conspiracy to control people. They talked about Dr. Anthony Fauci as if he were some kind of sinister Bond villain with a nefarious hidden agenda, while seeming to think Joe Rogan was a qualified epidemiologist. The culture of that place was utterly insane. I had to get out for the sake of my own sanity.

    You have such a great channel. I really enjoy your content. I have noticed in this video that you constantly call it an art. I wonder if it is now more a science then an art. I get it that there is still many new techniques to still he developed but since the depth is so deep already I think there is certainly a science. So question: is jiu Jitsu an Art or science? Both?

    The real question is if you guys give a different belt to a guy who comes in to your program from lets say ATOS (he was purple and you make him wear purple with a weird stripe).
    Dont you think that your guy who changes from your school to ATOS deserves the same faith (he comes in with blue and then gets the white in sport bjj school?.
    I think this is the way to go. What do you think?

    Over the last 21 years I have watched JJ change so much and in some ways its great, but the politics has, in my eyes, damaged the true essence of it. People have lost respect for the Gracie's because they choose to focus on the self defense instead of going all sport. I see it a lot with the new comers who have forgotten or never really knew where it all started. I stay out of the politics because it serves no purpose.

      BlackDaggerJitsu am I the only one not connecting the similarity you are trying to draw between sport jiu jitsu and MMA? You do realize these are two completely separate subjects. Maybe you are equating sport to no gi, which I don't understand.

    • @tusccountyjiujitsu
      @tusccountyjiujitsu 7 лет назад +3

      robbelliii I made no comparison between BJJ and MMA or Gi and No Gi. I said a lot of Sport guys have lost touch with what Jiu Jitsu was originally intended for, which is Self Defense.

    I'm half and half...I love the razor sharp basics that Kron does and I love the innovation of guys like Eddie Bravo who has added so much to the art...the only thing that I don't like about what some of the Gracies have said that you don't need to evolve or don't need new techniques, Ive heard Royce say that in interviews.
    I love leg locks and I don't understand why some of the old school doesn't like them...Can someone enlighten me to why that is?

      Is it true that some old school BJJ schools are against leg locks? if so, why? Ive never been told a straight answer, and I don't really buy the "its too dangerous" talk when any sub can result in an injury...Just wondering an opinion from someone who clearly knows his BJJ history. Thank you

      When punches are added to the equation, it's a different dance.

    • @pcprinciple3774
      @pcprinciple3774 5 лет назад

      Some, not all, of the leg positions are very artificial in the sense that if the other person could punch you then the effectiveness would dissolve. Old school principles are that you shouldn't do something in BJJ that wouldn't work in a street fight (i.e. self defence). Especially when you drop to your ass and butt scoot over to the opponent to set up said leg lock.

    • @Kimuraking
      @Kimuraking 5 лет назад +1

      The reason alot of old school guys dont like legs locks is because is was originally thought of as an "oh shit" technique. John Danaher explains it in his interview on the JRE. He said the old school guys looked at leg locks like you couldn't beat your opponent using basic bjj, So you basically said (in his words) "Fuck it. Go for a leg lock." Idk if this is true, But hes a Renzo gracie black belt, World renowned for his leg lock game, And a seeker of truth and knowledge. I would ASSUME he is a reliable source. Eddie bravo has told a story of how he was competing (I believe in brazil) and he almost finished his opponent with a toe hold. The instant he locked it up he was having garbage thrown at him, and Jean jacques machado was screaming at him "YOU GOTTA LET IT GO!!!"

    I always start any statement I make on Ju Jitsu by saying I'm an observer and a fan only, not a practitioner. Your philosophy on these subjects is spot on. The Ju Jitsu experience is like a buffet line. When you get to the tray that has bullshit (politics) on it, just pass.

    This might be a dumb question but I know usually to get a black belt it takes a very long time. Usually 6+ years but I’ve heard some ufc fighters who have a black belt in BJJ in like 4-5 years and they are pretty young as well. I was wondering how is that possible especially since there are better BJJ people than them out there that it’s taken close to 10 years for a black belt?

    I respect the everliving fuck out of the gracies, but I think they have become kind of petty and territorial when it comes to different schools, for instance their dislike of eddie bravo despite him having a style which clearly works and has submitted other gracies before.

      rickson did an interview with Eddie and told him that he had no problem with him personally. nothing wrong with nogi bjj, eddies idea of rubber guard came about bcuz he saw many bjj guys doing "sport" gi guard in a fighting situation... two different types scenarios.... however he uses his physical attributes to do the rubber guard etc... I hv modified many techs for both sport and striking in jiujitsu.... in my experience I NVR used gi based grips during a fight, ... in my curriculum the white blt to white/blue blt are all techs based on using nogi grips for fighting.... It's not fancy inverting...but it requires no physical attributes to do and u learn how to fight using jiujitsu or what you call self defense...

    • @KamaJiuJitsu
      @KamaJiuJitsu  7 лет назад +1

      Captain kiwi, btw, the rubber Guard Eddie does, it's because he saw Nino Schembri doing it with great success in the tournament tapes that used to get snuck out of Brazil in the late 90's to early 2000's.

      Kama Jiu Jitsu nice, I don't really keep constant with bjj politics, so I wouldn't know about the Gracie's new view, but for a long time he was getting shay on. Good that the Gracie's eventually accepted his style though
