Thank you so much for your Swissmar Borner V-1001 V-Slicer Plus Mandoline 5 Piece Set Review. It was very educational & authentic for me. I have encountered many of the same problems, when using hard vegetables with the Julienne 7mm & 3.5mm blades. I appreciate, you didn't edit out these difficulties, as it answered many of my questions, concerns, & issues with using this slicer. Please continue to post your RUclips Videos, as they are important public service videos.

I just bought this and love it. Surprisingly easy to clean as well. As long as you rinse with warm water right after use, everything washes off right away. I bought a pair of no-cut gloves because I’m terrified of cutting my fingertips off. I use two gloves on one hand.

    +
    FYI -
I'm still new at using a mandolin, but I think that I have an answer to your potato and carrot slicing problem(in the video)... I've found that you need to increase your velocity and increase pressure. The first couple passes might skate a bit, but after that if you keep up the velocity (slicing by momentum), you should be able to slice harder vegetables and tubers easily. Don't bear down!

I have the earlier version of the V-Slicer. My late husband bought it about 20 years ago. He only used it once and it sat in its box in the back of my cupboard until last week. Had to thinly slice potatoes for a recipe so I gave it a go. It's a real time saver and now I'm getting the hang of it, I'll be using it more often.

Blades on Borner's own videos seems so much sharper. They have no problem with carrots. Nothing falls out of the holder. Very little is left at the end. Maybe they edit out those problems. Or their mandolines are simply spanking brand new just off the factory floor, and perhaps this one is a bit older.
I see that they cut at a much higher speed. Perhaps there is some technique in using this device. The speed with which the fruits or veggies meet the blade may make them easier to cut.

The BEAUTY of this device is the V it results in you needing to use less pressure. I UNFORTUNATELY bought a different style on Amazon, because the plastic broke on 15 year old Borner (I used it every day - extensively = made sauerkraut too). The other one I bought was heavy, awkward, and I couldn't even cut big carrots or cabbage and everything I did with it felt like I was going to cut myself. THIS ONE is the BEST!!!!!! I am going to toss the $50 I spent on something else and buy one of these. UNFORTUNATELY I didn't think the Borner was sold on Amazon because I only saw it at Fairs.

I have a deli meat slicer that will do tomatoes and onions perfectly, as well as it does meat. My purpose of getting a mandolin like this, would be to make french fries for my deep fryer. The price is right, but I'm thinking the julienne blade on this tool wouldn't be any more effective than what I already have in my Breville Souse Chef food processor. I'm thinking, I would need a more advanced mandolin for making waffle fries and fancier cuts.

As a public service, when your food gets stuck as seen in this video, use the teeth on the edge of the safety guard. Just dig the teeth in and pull away from the blades. No fingers need to get near the blades at any time. I do suggest a cut resistant glove as an extra precaution.

I bought this thing back in 2009,used it a few times, thought it was too complicated and stored it in the garage and completely forgot about it,the bag was devoured by mice even.
That’s until 3 days ago I saw some lady using hers and remembered that I had one of these...mine came with a collector.
What do you know, I was making Sauerkraut and decided to be smart and held the cabbage with my hands and grated all the way down and very close to my fingers... VERY STUPID ME I grated the cabbage to the point where a few leaves were left and I got greedy and wanted more, I used force and lo and behold I cut myself so badly that I almost severed my bloody finger.🤦🏿‍♂️
Please people, learn how to operate this thing as those blades are extremely, extremely sharp,be very, very careful.
I now respect this thing and operate it with great care and outmost respect.
    Thanks.

We bought ours a few years ago and today tried to use it to cut carrot in to juliennes and found it a bit hit and miss, and we can see now after watching your video on how cutting carrots sucks on the ‘V’ slicer, but now it’s out of the cupboard I do intend to persevere with it until I get it Right! And yes those blades look dangerous if one is not careful! Could end up with julienne fingers! 😢
Also with ours we got a whirleygig thing that I believe you use on Cucumbers? Plus another large plastic body thing with differ size shaped slots in rows the full length of the moulding, ( any idea what that could be?)any help would be greatly appreciated,
    👍

Mine was stained by carrots on the first use. Any recommendations for removing the carrot stain?

You can try slicing potatoes afterwards and the juice may remove the stain. It generally goes away after several cleanings 😁

You should be extremely careful with these blades since its extremely sharp and i heard that they use surgical blades.
