Some of my ancestors are the ones who went from MA to ME. Others stayed in MA. I'm enjoying this series. Thank you!

If you want to know about the history of European settlement in the Americas, then Eric is the best! His style of storytelling, along with his vast knowledge of the facts, makes for an entertaining ride into the past. I don't miss an episode and often listen/relisten just to relive the experience.

And unfortunately, the only Gorges that anyone in Maine may happen to know is the dreary fort that sits sentinel out in Casco Bay.

That "County of York" map near the end shows "Saco" as Sawco, which is how a Mainer would pronounce the city and the river (saw-koh or sah co) and not like a paper bag Sack-o as many from "away" like to pronounce it. Just sayin'. Loved the two episodes I have seen so far.

@@theotherstatesofamericahis5212 That's ok, I had the same problem in reverse when I moved out your way for awhile, many years ago. Part of the fun.

@@theotherstatesofamericahis5212 Just think about how folks from away say Al-bany (my pal Al sound as if it is the same beginning sound used for Alabama or Allegheny) when the actual sound is more All-bany. Not sack o (not al-benny), it is Sah co/saw-co, sock-o/Socco (all-bany). Don't ask me why, they just are.

I live in Lewiston, unfortunately. But I moved up here 3 years ago from PA for travel nursing contracts. My first apartment was in Saco. I used to pronounce it “Say_CO” like the damn watch company 😂

Great job! I was aware of Topham, Merrymount, Saybrook, New Haven, but completely in the dark about Lygonia. I always felt Long Island should be Connecticut.

Even today many Mainers calls us Massholes… guess it’s got deep roots

Never heard of this, even as a native born new englander...most ancient maps ive seen still list what today we call maine as " massachusetts".

How did the Massachusetts Bay Company get a charter in the first place without getting approval from the Council of New England? For that matter, the pilgrims' colony of Pymouth? I think, Sir Ferdinando Gorges got ripped off by the so-called pius Puritans!!!

    • @MichaelTreadwell-jo9bi

Good point. The Massachusetts Bay colony had their charter revoked by Charles II because they were not following English laws such as the Navigation Acts. The Pilgrims were shaky also and they treated Thomas Morton badly because he was supplying guns to the Indians. Unlike the Pilgrims Morton had good relations with them. Miles Standish was a murderer.
