  • I realized recently that a lot of my viewers are very new to blacksmithing and knifemaking like myself but may not have access to all of the tools that I use on a daily basis. In an attempt to help get more people into the hobby of blade smithing I decided to show how to turn an old axe head into a custom hatchet to take with you on hiking trips this spring.
    This is a FANTASTIC project for beginners that requires minimal time, financial investment, or prerequisite skill but allows you to practice shaping metal, wood, leather, and sharpening skills.
    The tools and materials I used are featured below. Thanks for watching!
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    *TOOLS USED*
    4 ½ inch cut off wheels: amzn.to/2t5QC32
    Bosch Angle Grinder: amzn.to/2t3sOwF
    40 grit sanding wheel for 4 ½ inch angle grinder: amzn.to/2GnWCf8
    Shinto Rasp: amzn.to/2UMvQS9
    Red Mahogany aniline dye: amzn.to/2GlfOKq

    Man you never cease to amaze me. Another beautiful piece. I love how you repurpose or items. Your woodworking skills are awesome. Hatchett looks great. I got to be honest not real crazy about the sheath. But the hatchet itself is remarkable. Again my hat is off to you. Oh one more thing you're a busy man with a life of your own oh, you don't need to apologize for not making any videos for a little bit. You're allowed to have a life LOL. Take care man you're keeping my room for the next one

    • @80gritschmidt51
      @80gritschmidt51  5 лет назад +1

      Thank you so much! And I can see the sheath not being too stunning, I just wanted to show a quick way to make one in case any one following along with the build didn't know where to start. I'm definitely no leather worker though! Hahah. I appreciate the feedback and you taking the time to comment. I hope you have a great night! I'll see you on the next one.

      @@80gritschmidt51 I just hope you didn't take what I said about the sheath personal. Please don't. I was just being upfront and honest. Everything else you do is perfect. It all goes flawlessly. You're very inspirational person who keeps things so laid-back and chill but at the same time technical. People can't watch you without learning

      @@pauldejohn3333 hahah oh trust me I'm far from perfect and please don't apologize, I appreciate you being honest with me! I deeply value the opinions of my viewers especially ones as kind as you always are. Hearing what you guys do and don't like lets me make better videos for you. :)

    Good shape. Nice Bavarian style. The way ALL hatchets should be. You get a lot more 'bite' with these with less weight. Gonna run one through the shop and use a straight handle. Handles are a matter of taste I suppose, but for work use, I like a straight one. Good vid!!

    Aren't baseball bats made of ash?

    What kind of rasp is it that you are using? I've seen them used before but could never find them

    • @80gritschmidt51
      @80gritschmidt51  5 лет назад

      The rasp is called a Shinto rasp and I seriously can't recommend it enough. It's the best rasp design I've ever used. I put a link in this video's description to where you can find them on Amazon. If you do happen to use the link to get yourself one I get a few cents from Amazon at no extra cost to you so I certainly wouldn't mind. Hahah ;p
