12 hours is definitely too short for such an epic city that needs more attention from the world. I have been traveling, living and driving extensively in many places in the world and I would boldly say Shanghai ranks top 3 cities in the world, and in many aspects No 1. I will provide some personal opinion, please do not take it seriously though : ). Quoting one of the remarks from a Dutch colleague who was on a business trip to Shanghai last year. What makes this city different from all other metropolitans in the world is that, the sheer size of the city and scale of massive modern architectures. You would probably only see 1-2 business area in any well-known cities in this world and that's all! But here in Shanghai it is "everywhere", no matter what direction go you towards, as long as it is within 15 KMs of the city center, we have more than 5 hub areas which are equivalent to the Bund area and a myriad of small business/commercial facilities/areas are scattered across the whole city. Most of the travelers will only checkout the People's square and the Bund area, I am glad that you also checked out the Jing'an Temple area and the tranquil small streets nearby, actually the whole area(the concession area) is quite large, which is around 7KM^2, so it would take you 1-2 days if you walk around and it is super walkable. I can name a few for your future reference: LuJiaZui(the most iconic skyscraper area), XinTianDi(Fancy western vibe), JianAn template(which you visited), WuJiaoChang(famous university/commercial area), XuJiaHui(Old commercial center), Shiji Avenue area(modern commercial area). If you go even further, let's say 30-40 KMs from People's square, you would also see very good infrastructures and regional commercial centers. The metro system is the largest in the world(I am not calculating railways or local commute trains, which are quite developed in London or Tokyo), the network at the moment is 831KMs and 730KMs are being built and 70KMs new will be put into operation this year, so in the foreseeable near future the network will be around 1500KMs, which will surpass London significantly(around 1000KMs, metro + local commute train) but still need to catch up with Tokyo metropolitan area(which is around 2500KMs). High speed train(bullet train) is definitely worth a try and you may travel to neighboring cities like SuZhou(90KMs, 20mins), HangZhou(190KMs, 47mins) within an hour and these cities are also super modern while traditional. You would be amazed that these cities might be unheard of in the western world but actually is leading in many aspects compared to 90% of the European cities. The fastest from Shanghai to Beijing is 4hours 18mins at the distance of close to 1350 KMs and the average speed is around a whopping 313 KM/h. China is not like Thiland or Philipines where if you go outside of the metropolitan area, things start to become crude, shabby and laid back, the infra here is consistently on high standards. The road condition is ultra modern, elevated roads and underground tunnels are everywhere so that wherever you go, you would expect to see 4-8 lanes newly-built asphalt expressway in the city and it is reportedly that the free inner-city viaduct(speed limit 60-100) network in Shanghai is more than 900KMs(Not including the highway:100-120KM with toll gates in this city). I see viaducts in Tokyo and in some other south asian countries but the network and road condition is not comparable, I don't think inner city viaduct is a popular thing in Europe but I do see them in USA. In LA, the highway is more about a big lane with flyovers when it needs to go through some important intersections. TBH, this makes driving in Shanghai super interesting, you will be able to contemplate the city view just by renting a car and randomly drive around The shopping malls in the city are super impressive and modern, compared to any south asian malls you can see in Bangkok or Manilla, the ones you see on NanJing road are very touristy and are not comparable to the top malls that local residents would visit, as a native Shanghainese, I almost never visit the ones(also the restaurants) on NanJing road. Finally, China has a very varied landscape so be sure to check out non-metropolitan areas in China, you will be able to see sceneries you would see in Switzerland(west to Chengdu and XinJiang), snow mountains and plateau in Tibet and QingHai, you would also see tropical beaches in HaiNan province, and many more. Hopefully this gives you some insights into what needs to be checked out when you come back next time.
