I was more into strategy and rpgs on the c64. I'm gearing up to play Gunship again and I'm working my way through demon's winter right now. Currently I'm using an Ultimate 64 which allows me to play both the NTSC and PAL games. To add to the list
Space Taxi: I have over 3 decades of saves on this rom dating back to when I was a kid, got back from college, working in the 2000's and now my sons.
Below the Root: Short and unique rpg, no killing and no stealing. Played and finished that recently and it has stood the test of time.
Archon 1/2, Jetset Willy 2, Load Runner, Wizzard, Montezumas Revenge, Defender of the Crown are more action related games I would recommend. One game I don't see any place is Rocket Ball, graphics are not great but a lot of fun if you have someone to play against.
Lastly, Tower of Rubble is a new c64 game that would have been a big hit back in the day. C64anabalt is also a lot of fun.

Guess I wanted games with stories - I wanted to know what happened next, not the same but a bit faster. I did like Delta Mk II (the hacked version with alternative graphics), Tapper, IM, Kokotoni Wilf and Infocom games. Hated joystick wrenchers, though. Rocketball was fun and cool and, for some reason, Zolyx. Mind you, I got more fun out of hacking and writing games than actually playing them. Write the game, find the bugs and then the bugs become the game. Sending the breakout ball through a gap so that the machine crashes or losing 2 segments in centipede when you only have one resulting in a sudden 255 segment tail - now _that_ was fun!

I wonder if anyone can help me remember a game... I don't have much info and all I remember is being a spaceman (I think) and exploring caves and picking up some objects. I thought it was called Exile but I can't find anything :(
Some of my favourite games were Racing Destruction Set, Paradroid, Uridium, Elite, Boulder Dash, just to name a few and I also remember a wrestling game that I was fond of but that may have been on the Amiga, those years are such a blur now :(

I didn't like this list, and I think that if you stick to your rule of only adding game you already own yourself... yeah, well, you should have called the list something other than 'the best 25 Commodore 64 games ever'. My humble personal opinion. Oh, I think we all did hear the emulated drive sounds of some of the games being loaded from an Ultimate cartridge. Right? Nothing wrong with running backups to preserve the original media. Anyway, thumbs up and all. It is after all impossible to disagree with your pick for number one. Tough as nails but excellent music.
