I'm on a bit of an unaged rum journey right now, so many good ones to try - and as Big G says, let's not forget the Cane Juice! Not just official 'agricoles' but e.g. the Paranubes! And shout out to Windsong, a fine Cornish unaged sipper!
STEVE!!! Great video!!! I def love white rum!! Angostura is one of my favs as well as Plantation 3 stars. Lots of flavor as an unaged... CHEERS!!!
Once I've finished my "Cuban Exploration Pack" I might have to try some white rums. It's a category I normally dismiss, probably because I don't drink a lot of daiquiris or mojitos.
Excellent video topic my friend. Do you also have a video explaining the differences between white, gold, dark and black rums? Would love to see it!
Tune in every Saturday. They’re coming. Gold is next week. Followed by Dark the week after.
@@StevetheBarmanUK I certainly look forward to it! But what I meant is, do you have one single video in which you discuss the main differences between each rum type?
No mention of Agricole Blanc probably the one style of white rum where the unaged blanc is seen by many as more iconic than the aged expression.
I know this is a bit off-topic for this video, but I had a question. So I am as much of a noob as you can get. I have only had real rum once before, and that was a few weeks ago at a hipster cocktail lounge in a Mai Tai, and I LOVED IT. I have no idea what Rum they used, but it tasted so much different than any other alcohol I've ever had. I started researching, and based off of what people have said I'm assuming it's a Jamaicam Rum, maybe. I've heard the "funk" being described as "over-ripe banana" and that sounds about right, even though I have an insanely unrefined palate (I have a heard time telling coke from dr.pepper sometimes lol). So here's my question: I want to try some different Rums, and not all from the same style, this way I can see what I like. I searched online and put three in a shopping cart and I'm wondering if these are a good place to start, or if there are better options (maybe these are all similar and I don't know it lol, like I said I'm a noob and what to be educated). The three are Plantation Barbados Grande Reserve Rum 5 Yr, Smith and Cross Trad'l Jamaican Rum, and Appleton Estate Signature Blend. Any advice?
Ha, I could talk all day about that, and you could chat to 100 different people and get 300 different rums. Truth is, there's no correct place to start. I could go cautious and warn you off the Smith and Cross...BUT...you may love it. The simply best way is to dive in...SOMEWHERE!
The only thing i will say.
Actually 2...
First come in to Discord stblive.uk/discord and you'll get loads of help there too!
Secondly... The 3 you picked are good shouts. I can tell your US by the Plantation as we don't get that in the UK, ours is the straight Barbados 5yo. So a lot of us will have never tried the Grande Reserve. There's also another thing here too... Appleton Signature is a great place to start. BUT... the Appleton 8 is so much better. And newbies love it too. In the UK it's literally like £5 difference. It's a no brainer. But here's the funny thing, the Appleton 12 is even better, and just only another £6/£7 more than the 8yo. Now yes, that is £12/£13 more than the signature...but can you see the kinds of rabbit holes you can go down!!! Hahaha. Look start basic. Maybe even through in a different style like a Havana 7yo. The trick is keep trying till you find a style you like, then you can explore the style. Cos every Country produces totally different Rum...let alone the Distilleries in that Country!
Thanks so much! This really helps! Also sorry, I totally didn't even see you replied to me on the other video before I posted this here, that's my bad. Thanks for the information!!
Hiya Steve, a single malty for over 15ys i have now started my Rum experience (Since November) which is how i came across your great channel but low and behold you have not done any live stuff for a while, are you not doing them anymore?.
Yes mate, still every Sunday 8pm, but over on youtube.com/@stevethebarmanextra (Lives get unlisted straight after, but then reuploaded as video replays on Monday - mainly to cut the fluff and sort any audio) PS... I also have My Reviews Channel too... youtube.com/@stevethebarmanrumreviews
I recently got into rum after drinking whiskey for 35 years. A year into it I'm left asking myself....why am I even drinking white rums that were aged in wood and then filtered beyond belief to make them clear??? I love the well aged rums. I'm going to try some rum that's never been in wood. I believe Wray & Nephew is completely unaged? Any thoughts.
Blanc agricoles tend to be completely unaged and barrel-free, though the flavor profiles are of course completely different than molasses rums. But if you what want to taste is the purest expression of a sugarcane spirit, that’s a great place to go.
Thanks Robert. I like trying new things. I drink unaged corn liquor and like challenging single malts. I'm going to try what you suggested.
Can sugar also be added to white rum?
Yeah 👍
One thing this video made me wonder: do you know of any white spiced rums? I have never seen one and don't know if they exist. Whenever I see a spiced rum it is usually a gold or darker rum. I wonder why this is
I do explain why in an upcoming video. But I’ll give you the obvious answer… Spices (ever fake spice flavours from essences) will contain colour. Just think, the big one Vanilla…that’s gonna turn a rum Lught brown straight away. Without cinnamon, nutmeg, clove etc etc.
@@StevetheBarmanUKbut what about falernum? I just bought a bottle of falernum (one of the brands you recommended) and it is a clear liquid despite containing spices. Is rum somehow discolored (or should I say coloured) by the same types of spices that seem to have no effect on the clearness of falernum?
I'm trying to get into rum, would you say that white/silver rums are a good intro into rums or are other categories a better introduction to rum? I'm pretty young so my tastebuds are still accustomed to sweeter, tropical and thin flavours as opposed to rich, dark woody flavours.
Start with plantation 3 stars, it is around £20 a bottle and good quality. Try a daiquiri with it. Can use flavoured sugar syrups to sweeten it up if you prefer it that way.
@@kevinmears8683 If I'm making any mixes or cocktails I think a rum and coke or whiskey and coke is as far as I will go. I'm looking at some spiced rums, also plantation 3 stars is one I want to try as well for sure. I heard the plantation pineapple is also decent, but yeah maybe a lot of these would require mixing with coke for a noob like me to handle it.
@Tuna i have never liked cike with rum, coke is so old school, there are many great mixers out there, experiment a bit. Don't just stick to coke, you will be missing out so much. As for spiced rums, rockstar spirits is a great starting point, Lazy dog is a great british brand as well. Depends on budget and how much you want to have. Try ginger ales, try lime juice with sugar syrups for daiquiris.
White rum is the style I use the most of. Daqs and Mojitos are my goto serve, never with coke as I seem to want a darker rum Appleton 8 is my goto for coke at the moment.
Maybe I need to experiment more with different serves.
@@kevinmears8683 But I love coke. I like whiskey and coke so I'm thinking rum and coke is a good way to introduce myself to rum, and then afterwards I can sip neat or have with other mixers. I plan on buying some Rockstar spirits Two Swallows from my local Dan Murphy's (aussie alcohol store).
I don't like ginger ales either, I much prefer coke.
