Thanks for watching. This Ryobi backpack blower starts and runs but its not that smooth and its not getting to full speed. Before we start adjusting the carburetor lets take a look at the root causes.

Hello my friend, Stilh wrench here again. I get a lot of blowers in my shop, and if it does run the complaint is usually the same as your customer. It just doesn't run wide open like it use to, or it doesn't blow like it did. My answer is always the same . It never will till you put the the missing end piece of nozzle back on it.Once you do rpm's go up and so does the air flow, all by design. It holds true with combi type weed eaters also. They usually bring in just the top section because it fits in there car easier and say it wont start.After i fix it they say yes it runs but not wide open like it should.Again it never will until you attach the bottom shaft with the weed eater head so it will put a load on the engine, and then it comes back to life.

you always have a plan..follow the plan and determine root cause. Otherwise you're jumping from place to place with no direction at hand and can miss the problem. Good job.

Hey thanks for doing this and going over all the steps. Necessary or not when looking for fix I much rather get all possibilities in single video clip vs searching them separately and guessing along. Thx.

Nice fix. You did the job correctly. In my shop I always take the extra few minutes to check the plug, spark arrestor, filter, fuel, etc. The only difference I do it to adjust the carb while holding the trigger at full speed. I also go very slightly rich so as not to burn the piston. Thanks for the video.

There is a reason we follow protocol. Do it once and know the engine. There is another problem I've found and that is a partially clogged fan or blower tube, this is caused by careless operation or storage. This is rare but it happened to a friend.
A stick jammed into the fan so when he started it the fan broke causing excessive vibration and low output.
You can't just throw it in a corner when your done.

Well, I would check just to be sure before I turn the screws. When I do get my Stihl equipment in the future, I’m taking all the spark arrestor screens off because I think it will make the engine run better in my opinion.

In my experience, if you try to adjust the carb initially, you will only mask the symptom. The problem will show back up later and probably be worse. Usually the carbs are set at the factory and are not intended to be adjusted. There are plenty of techs out there of the opinion that if you adjust a carb, there’s a problem that you haven’t fixed. It’s probably a good idea to make a checklist listing everything you do or check in order. Kinda like flying an airplane. Pre takeoff checklist, post takeoff checklist, landing checklist, etc. Skip a step and you may have an unfavorable outcome. They help me maintain consistency. It helps keep me from having to say, “Damn! I knew I should have checked that!”
you are correctly, adjusting the carb will only make up for a carb that's failing but if that's the only thing the owner is willing to do, it's the best option for them.
Well mine ran like sh*t new so I to say that they are preset at the factory is bs. Everyone lives at different altitudes and temps. There is no one set it and forget it.

I've never seen the cover taken off without removing the base first good job on doing that but it's way easier to remove the base to gain access to the front screws

@@aussie2uGA thought the same thing myself usually the base screws need to be removed then the base then access to the front screws are available to be removed. Merely cuz when the base is connected to the machine you cannot get the screwdriver back there to unscrew the cover
The motor just "pops" off the springs on the base by pulling it backward while pushing the backpack frame forward. Snaps back together just as easily.
I think the housing comes off and on more easily if you remove the harness. I've never done it, but I've seen other videos on this model, and the mechanics removed the harness before opening the cover.

Personally find that gas powered ryobi products are great when they work. But they always have one or 2 parts that were made to cut costs and are the accilies heel of them.

When I got my 85 from the trash man, after I got it running it was slobbering a little so I went ahead and leaned it down and haven't needed to touch it since. The limiters are still on it and I know he wouldn't remove and replace them for any adjustment. If I had the Ryobi and it started that good, I would've just put the tool on the 'H' and started doing a little twisting to see what it needed. Like when you did it, you can tell right quick which way to go. No slobbering would mean to me that it was lean and needed a little more and that's the way I would've gone. And as far as Ryobi, I'd put them in the same class as WEedeater brand but Poulan would be lower. The Weedeaters ran for many years but when you get geezerish, the fighting ceases, or it does with me. My 85 usually starts on the 3rd pull and pops on the 2nd after priming and choking. Mowers on usually 2nd or 3rd. So Thanks for another fine fix, happy weekend and BLESSINGS!

I have the updated version of this blower it works but it has a weird sound when you let it idle it has a ratching sound.

So my question is, what would be a good base setting for the air-fuel mixture screws on this type of a carburetor. For example, when rebuilding an automotive carburetor, I would turn the screws all they way in until they are gently seated, and then back them both out about two turns. This would usually be good enough to get the engine started, so that the carb could be more accurately tuned. However, in this case the threads on the air-fuel mixture screws seem to be very course, so turning them even a quarter turn would be equal to turning an automotive air-fuel mixture screw one whole turn. So, my question is, where should I set these screws for the first time after I rebuilt the carb?
I don't normally prescribe to a "Nominal" setting, but If you're asking what I set them to, Probably 1.5 turns out, and if that didn't work I would try 1.75 turns.

I can only get it to run with the choke completely closed, and I cannot figure out where it is drawing all the extra air? Base gasket between engine and carb is good, so I'm wondering if I have a ruptured diaphragm or some other type of internal vaccum leak.
I just replaced the carb with a brand new one, before carb replacement was running very poor, now it dies when press trigger at full throttle, why is it doing this with a brand new carburetor? I'm clueless
The new carb comes with a "base" tune, You'll need to adjust it, to make up for any issues the engine might have. Try turning the L screw out about half a turn
I have that model and replaced the carb and fuel lines my question is the return line from the carb into the tank is that supposed to be submerged into the fuel or just above? Im having issue with it running fine for about 20 minutes than it just wants to cut out i made adjustments checked the plug but didn’t look for a spark arrest thnx
The return line does not have to be submerged but you can if you want to. Usually when it runs for some time and then dies it means the fuel cap isn't venting like it supposed to. Try replacing it.

HG, I would like your opinion. My spare Ryobi runs like crap. I have attempted to adjust the carb so now I plan to remove the carb. Would you replace the carb right off the bat, or try to fix the old one? Sounds like a question at the end of your videos. Lol

@@HomeGaragechannel I disassembled the carb and cleaned it. At first glance the diaphragm and gasket looked good. Not stiff or cracking. Sooo I put everything back together, now the primer bulb won't prime. Switched the lines... Blah Blah Blah disassembled the carb AGAIN. This time I saw a tiny slit in the diaphragm. I hope that was the issue. I ordered an assortment from Amazon. Fingers crossed. Thanks for listening HG.
Aversion could try clean flow as well
Mine wont even throttle up, was using it this past Sunday worked fine, then middle of cleaning it just bogged down. I've checked the common items except the muffler (will check that) but it idles fine just bogs down with acceleration and has what looks like dirty oil running out of the muffler. I've only used this blower 5 times about 30 mins each time.
look in the tank, and see if the fuel filter is still connected to the line.
Hey I have one that starts speeds up fine then bogs down and dies at full throttle. If I fan the throttle it'll stay running at high speed... any suggestions?
Yes adjust the carb.
I have a similar symptom as Drew with the this model. When you say "adjust the carb", do you mean leaner on the high speed screw? How often would you give it one of those "tune up kits" (new air filter, fuel filter, spark plug).
@@davidtorrente8651 unfortunately each tune is trial and error. I turn the screw one way and listen to what happens to the engine. If its an unfavorable result I turn it the other way and see if it improves. I only give it a tune up when needed.
Hopefully you or someone can help diagnose. I have the 760 cam version of this blower. So what happened during operation.started to run rough then quit. Now the starter rope is hard to pull but not impossible. It’s jerky pulling it. Removed plug and rope pulled smoothly. Did a borescope and found scratches on walls cylinder head had very little carbon. Re installed plug and rope was har to pull again. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
my take on it is that the engine is flooded, causing it to increase the compression, just not to the point of hydro locking. I would take out the plug, and pull the rope several times and walk away for a day or 2, then pull the rope again, and then screw the plug back in and see if the pull is still difficult .

no valves anywhere on this engine, and no compression release either.

yes you can use a wire terminal but its not a positive turn so you'll need to look at the orientation of the pacman's mouth to see how far you've turned it. i used to use this method in a pinch.

Hello! I have a question about an issue that no one seemed to address.
This very same blower will start for me after year in storage no problem. It needs some carb tweeking to run properly but when the motor is hot it will not restart. I have to leave it for an hour or so to cool down and then it starts again. What could that be? Thank you!
sure, the carb is out of adjustment. You mentioned that it needs some carb tweaking to run properly, and that's the biggest clue. To effectively fix this issue, I would replace the carb with a new one, and that should take care of the problem, if it doesn't then we move on to the next problem.

Hope you still monitor your posts.. I have the same unit - it runs fine for about 5 minutes, then eventually it runs rough, throttle becomes less responsive, and then dies of the course of a few minutes. Any ideas?
sure, either the gas cap, isn't venting air, like it should, or the carb needs adjusting. Try leaving the cape loose next time and see if it will run longer than 5 minutes.

Yes Jeremy Thiel you are absolutely correct. The other tube should be on there to tune but it didn't come with it.
I would of just adjusted the carb and ran it why go though all those extra steps when you know why it's bogging? And you know its has to do with the carburetor?

Never had any major issues with my Ryobi gas powered equipment. However the Chinese Torch branded spark plugs that are shipped with the units are terrible. I’d recommend replacing it with a champion, denso or NGK plug. I buy the powercare Home Depot brand of canned fuel because it’s the only ethanol free gas you can buy in my area and it’s cheaper then TruFuel.

I'm sorry not really sure what you're asking or stating.
My Ryobi backblower shuts off after i use it one time. I have had repaired two times i still have the same problem.
after the repair, did they tell what they fixed?

they may have gotten it run again, but they didn't test it out for very long.
Next time place your hand over the nozzle and see if the engine changes speed from resistance as you test it.

I have this brand and I love there battery powered tools but this blower I can sum up in three words JUNK JUNK JUNK. I had about 7 hours of use and it bogged out when you hit the throttle, took it down to the repair shop, did a carb adjustment worked for about 20 minutes and back to stalling out. Their is a reason why they only get 2 stars on a Amazon review.
That totally makes sense now.
I would check the basics first but just about every Ryobi line trimmer that I've fixed under warranty in the past had a carburettor adjustment issue !

I brought 4 years ago Ryobi blower new when I blower to the leaves three big houses and it stops put the starter ten times it was no good engine it was brand new and it JUNK never buy I was buy Still and Echo blower are better than any other

I think that if you look up the part number, it will be cheaper if you don't buy it from ryobi
I bought one and it never ran right finally it stopped working and then I bought the universal kit which included the primer bulb replacement. Once I replaced the primer bulb it never ran better. My sense is that the original primer bulb was cheaply made. I would not buy this product again because of poor quality.

Mine starts but when I pull the throttle it turns off
the carb needs to be adjusted and if it doesn't work, you need to replace the carb.
Why is the leaf blower not running at full speed? I'm glad that the air filter is not dirty.
The carb wasn't able to deliver enough fuel to the engine. So the car needed an adjustment
it was missing the bottom half and it actually needs the missing end piece of the nozzle in order to put the proper load on the engine, and then once you do that it will run full speed like it should.
i have one and mine wont start it has spark compression and fuel
the flywheel key might be sheared. It will still have spark, but it's happening at the wrong time

I’ve seen a lot of people buy Ryobi backpack blower from Home Depot and they don’t want to spend a lot of money on the top of line backpack blower lie Echo, STIHL and Husqvarna

I have all Echo and Husqvarna equipment for business I have 3 echo backpack blowers and 1 Husqvarna backpack blower all echo equipment are newer than the Husqvarna I have Husqvarna is almost 30 years old still running strong and the color fate out I have echo 580,770and 8010 next year I’m buying echo 9010 backpack blower. The old Husqvarna is 150 BT I use Husqvarna XP 2 cycle oil in ethanol free gas in echo equipment

there could be an issue with the carb, delivery an inconsistent amount of fuel.
The fix would be to rebuild or replace the carb.
The other issue could be an air, somewhere on the engine, but the leak would also have to be inconsistent as well.
Speaking of backpack blowers:when the blower doesn't start when hot... Possible cause(s)?
If it starts cold, stopped on purpose when hot, and won't start again its usually a carb problem. The fuel isn't enough or not enough. The other factor is if the compression is low it will make this problem even worse.

My spark plug boot keeps coming off
try cleaning the inside fo the boot and the top of the plug, with carb cleaner, to get Rid of any grease , dirt or Oil

then use a zip tie to secure it to the plug, otherwise replace the boot or the entire ignition model

FYI it is possible to clean a "non-serviceable" muffler. You'll need a blow torch and an air compressor with a blow gun. Place the clogged muffler on a non-combustible surface like concrete. You can also hold it with pliers or a vice. Light the blow torch and aim it into the muffler's inlet. Allow the muffler to heat until the carbon starts to burn. Start blowing a little air in, and the carbon should burn more intensely. Eventually this should become self sustaining and the blow torch won't be necessary to keep it going. Continue blowing in air until the carbon burns itself out.

I don't know why they just didn't make a more conventional looking backpack blower. This one has always boggled me.
That blower has a very odd design. It looks like the exhaust is run through the actual blower housing and out the nozzle.

Stupid comment Dora. No doubt a Stihl or Echo fanboy...lots of people have these Ryobi BP42 units (including me-I have 2 of them at $150CAD each brand new from HD). Compared to a $800 Stihl unit-they are worth the money paid and worth a turn of an adjustment screw to put back in service as Home Garage demonstrated. Only a fool would throw something out for the sake of a carb adjustment-seems that describes you pretty well...
Two thumbs down on this brand. Have worked on them for years. Always hard to start, poor build quality. You better buying Echo or Sthil.

Ahhh, I too almost had the same issue. The piston broke apart. Ryobi is junk. Home Depot's own repair shop couldn't fix it. Shame on Home Depot for abusing customer loyalty and accepting revenue from Ryobi in exchange for shelf space and a sale. I will tell all my friends.
