what I really like about this animation is that they finally gave depth to characters that aren't just the main, each character had such a unique fighting style fitting to their personality and the back and forward tension was really good. It wasn't rendered as well and the start was a bit fast/confusing but this is one of the best if not the best animation since a long time.

Even without dialogue, I could tell the context and how the characters interact with each other. The tuning in their reactions, interactions and personality are great in this.
Not only that, the choreography, camera work, story writing and the obviously fluid animation is absolutely flawless. I’m glad to be able to stick to this content for so long.

This is one of the few BPS animations I've watched where I really felt his animation style. When I heard that he had directed this, I knew I was in for a treat, but I didn't expect it to be such a cinematic masterpiece for a shorter production. Not only did every movement have fluidity, but weight and intention. The fight scenes in this were phenomenal, and you could really feel the difference in styles between characters. But their personalities showed even outside the arena, in just how they entered the room. Even the score was amazing and carried the weight of every moment. The shot composition and just how everything all fit together was perfect.
This had SoW and Starfall vibes, and it didn't even have voice acting.
honestly, i dont know what it was, but it really felt like i just watched a whole movie that was an hour long in one sitting, the characters felt so alive and the fighting movements were literally incredible, you guys really never fail to bring minecraft to life, ill always come back to this channel from time to time to appreciate every single moment of such amazing artists and work behind these, because this is what makes everything shine to its potential. just scrumptious job to everyone that has worked behind this. supremacy to derp as well
and one more thing, you guys literally never fail to portray the story and the characters interactions without any voice acting, its always so mesmerizing and you can tell of what theyre on about, its really awesome

@@Shrewstorm1exactly! this is what makes me inspired and of what makes me admire the people behind the animations and the productions, the characters need to be portrayed through feelings and when i say feelings i mean THE feels, you need to see it yourself through the screen and to, by any chance, make it relatable or so, for you to understand clearly of whats going on, which is also one of the main things what makes them shine and for the whole product to actually be good on its own, ive always loved whenever people focus on the little details when in reality they can be big indeed
So real, It was worth watching it and i was hyped with the Fights, This must be my most liked Minecraft Animation out of all of Black Plasma Studios (Squared Media)'s animations.

Derp's unpredictability when fighting is what makes him so unique, I liked how he stood on the brute's chains acting like he did that on accident
Edit: And the chase sequences is so well animated and planned out that it makes me wish I was that talented and professional in animating
I don't usually think to hard about animations like this, but man, the characterization of the protagonists and antagonists throughout is so unusual and facinating.
You got your main boi The Derp, clumsy and foolhardy yet unexpectedly powerful. He's strong enough to defeat his opponents and kind enough to spare their lives, and though he's not the strongest his creativity, unpredictability, and ability to think outside the box gives him the win.
The fight coordinator is interesting because he's disinterested. His body language is bored and laid back, like a guy watching a dull movie rather than witnessing a murder. The arena is just a job to the Coordinator, the organized killing nothing more than to him than a money-making method. He only loses his composure when something unexpected happens like the Derp defeating the top two gladiators, and even then, it seems more like aggravation and annoyance rather than a true emotional response. Even when Derp defeats the hammer gladiator and makes a grand escape the Coordinator is more annoyed than worried, looking at him like a minor inconvenience rather than the absolute beast he is.
The spear guy and sword guy are nothing new, just wandering adventurers caught up in a seriously bad situation. They're both merciful, strong, and strategic in their own ways, though the one scythe guy did end up murdered. Probably the most impressive feat among the two was their joint escape, with the sword guy intentionally throwing the fight to the dual sword girl and faking his death and the spear guy escaping from captivity and going back to rescue the Derp. Overall, a pretty cool duo if not a bit basic.
The dual sword girl (the "Sellsword", anyone?) is a fascinating character in that she's basically a sociopath. She kills indiscriminately and without hesitation, constantly grinning and fooling around despite the dire situation she's in. Her body language and facial expressions are constantly relaxed and playful, and she even goes out of her way to taunt and/or tease the other fighters, an innocent act severely out of place in the blood-soaked arena. The Sellsword seems to have been in the arena so long she's snapped, giving in to the violence and leaving her fear and mercy behind, a soulless killer hiding behind a friendly smile. Escaping with the Derp and his buddies was probably the best thing that happened to her in a while, especially considering how she would have been mummified if she'd stayed.
Speaking of mummies, the entity that creates them is an odd one. Nothing is known or disclosed about them beyond what is directly shown, leaving the viewer to ask their own questions. What is the creature, and why is it there? Why does looking at its eyes turn you into a mummy? Is it there willingly or is it a prisoner like the rest? Lots of questions and no answers leave the entity unknowable, a character shrouded in mystery and obscurity.
Lastly, the hammer gladiator is an intriguing antagonist in the way he's presented. A powerful, relentless fighter using brute strength and cheap tricks to conquer fighter after fighter, killing and disrespecting each opponent that steps up to him. The hammer gladiator seems to have been in the arena far longer than anyone else and is clearly the Coordinator's favorite because of it, fighting and killing up until he faces the Derp. As deadly as gladiator is in conflict he seems just as lethargic outside of it, sitting around aimlessly and never interacting with the other fighters, even dismissing the Sellsword's attempts at teasing with a single glare. He gives the impression of being tired and worn down, a fighter that has seen too many battles yet refuses to rest. It is interesting though, how even after being defeated in the ring the hammer gladiator continues to live, standing on the ridge with the Coordinator and his lackies watching the Derp and his friends escape. It gives a stronger sense of importance to the character, that he may stand among the masters of the arena as an equal rather than a slave. Perhaps he knows more than it seems, or perhaps he is even more dangerous than the Coordinator yet still serves under him. Finally, the gladiator represents a parallel to what the Derp would have become if his friends hadn't rescued him from the arena; a tired, broken man forever taking lives just to survive another day. Not only is this anathema to the Derp's character, it further reinforces the differences between the two, highlighting the importance of their confrontation and the fortune that Derp had in escaping it.

Two things. I don’t think anyone except maybe the gladiator has been there that long. I mean we saw the sword guy and that girl both in that arena trial and we had a flashback from 2 days ago showing sword and spear guy together so neither has been there that long. Also the gladiator didn’t really kill as much as you said. I mean he had probably the least lethal weapon possible(blunt force would hurt like hell but probably liveable).

Besides the AMAZING animation, I really love the way that four of the fighters survived and not just Derp. I was devastated when the blond guy was eliminated but thanks to the director, he and his three other friends escaped in the end.
Once I would say Derp wasn't skilled to fight, that was incompetent and just the funny member... Now damn he's a real skilled warrior! Love what my boy become 💪🗿

It’s not even that he’s a skilled warrior he’s a decent fighter but what Makes him win these sorts of battles is his Strategy’s and his fish of course if y’all know sword4000 you should know he’s not the best PvP player but he heavily relies on battle iq and strategy’s which is how he gets very far in his events same for derp
The new combat style Zilleyon has brought to the team is incredible! I especially like the particle effects on weapon clashes & the lithe, fast-paced combat.
The only (very slight) issue I noticed is that the background characters often have synced up animations (since the same animation was copy-pasted on multiple spectators). But some minor things are to be expected on a new director's first video.
IMO this is one of the best animations Squared Media has released in a long time!

I cannot stop rewatching the part where Derp utilized everything he had in his disposal to get a very satisfying blow (and sound) straight to the head of the Gladiator
Nevertheless, the animation is so well made, especially the fight scenes because of how they have this weighty feel to have this impact of the weapon mixed with the fantastic fighting choreography
Moreover, each character had so much personality and a unique fighting style exclusive to them displayed in this video.

Thats why Derp is my favorite character. Although he looks, well weird, he is extremelly smart and resourceful. He makes use of literally everything, and this fight alone proves that he is one of the greatest characters in squared media.

Arbiter617 would be proud of Derp for this. Not only did he survive all the challenges of the Arena, he managed to beat it to the end, then escape with his new friends.
I really love the fact that after all this time, you can still make your animations look so good! I would say my favorite part was where the noob's newest friend was able to split his double sided blade into 2 so that he could have double the weapons. No joke, but this is one of my more favorite animations from the recent category I've ever seen.

I loved the animation and the choreography. The movements for the people with the bladed weapons were fluid almost like a dance fitting considering how some of them were used while the big guy holding the hammer was stiff which fit's well with what he is using and I love how deep's movements looked almost sluggish and uncoordinated showing that he has little combat experience but over time he gets better and better. I also liked that girl with the blades, her mouth looked like it's was doing the 'OwO' face which was cute but the way it was drawn was a little weird but still cute also I liked how the way her mouth moved it made her look like cute, sadistic and seductive at the same time.

Probably my favorite thing about these animations is how they can tell an entire deeply written and lore filled story without the use of a single line of dialogue. Keep up the great work
I've learnt today to never judge others by their looks! This has to by far be one of the best animations I've seen here, the fighting is really great and each of the character's personality are very cool and fitting and you can understand what each character is "saying" even if they don't talk.
All the sound effects, effects, and music too. They were all stunning. There were also such adorable moments!! also the transitions lmao...
The fight of derp and the chain guy was the coolest fight…i like the way derp uses the momentum caused by the chain guy against him
I love the main cast here, all effectively visually characterized which is an incredible feat, Great job Zilleyon
We have our og, Derp, an initially underestimated but actually very experienced fighter(has endured several apocalypses with combat skill and quick thinking alone), so much so he can spare enemies with ease. This compassion is also what helps him get out the arena and escape
The best friend, the Sleep Deprived one, an ultimately decent sociable guy with a good moral code and sense of honor, also sparing those he could. Also extremely skilled, he would have likely beaten the Hammer Champion if he saw through his opponent’s “challenge” mid ways in the fight as a deception to win. And even then he probably planned that out to ease the escape and got him able to freely get Derp out too
The Green eyed great sword guy, a very smart man also decent guy, skilled and kind enough to spare his enemies. He appears to have been there awhile, but used that time effectively to eventually plan his escape, capable of utilizing the Murder Girl’s own reputation and some good acting to fake his own death and then secure both an escape route with time to get friends out
And Murder Girl, similarly to the Green eyed guy, has been there awhile. However she seems resigned to her life there, likely killing her opponents to spare them from becoming monsters alive, and living without a care in the arena because she and everyone else will likely die at any time. However she hold no lost love for her captors and is trying to survive like everyone else. She seems to hold a sense of honor as well, coming back to save Derp likely due to him sparing her and she escapes fine for repaying him
A few small corrections on that. Green eyed guy was with blond haired guy two days before this happened so not that long. Two, the thing at the beginning looks like green eyed guy and blond haired girl arrived around the same time(considering it looks exactly like what derp and blond haired guy did) so she probably hasn’t been there that long. Three, I kind of doubt any of them knew about the getting turned into zombies part. Still pretty good analysis though.
Huge respect for the extremely talented animators who created and worked on this.

I really liked the derps side of his mercifulness and the fighting, the fighting really is detailed, I loved the fighting the most. Make more fighting scenes (especially with swords).

The storyboard and cameraangles were amazing. The faces and arms show more emotion which is important when there is no dialogue and something about that girl's face is intentionally seductive.

Terrific job by Zilleyon himself! It's so awesome seeing his talent over the years coming together for this animation, hands down some his best work yet. Though the fights were the highlight, the other elements like composition, music and sound and the story itself was also really well done. Great that you managed to balance the action with story beats and character focus so you can actually get invested in the characters themselves, something that was refreshing to see.
Congratulations on becoming a director Zilleyon, I'm so keen to see your future projects and what other stories you tell!

Gotta say, this is probably the best animation you guys have put out in a while (Other than the Alex and Steve Finale). The characters were really well put together, there was weight and suspense, and the animation took itself seriously which I REALLY appreciated. The fight scenes were excellently animated and put together. I wish the escape itself was more fleshed out and you felt the suspense and struggle of trying to escape the arena (though I loved the one-shot through the cave). You seem to have a cinematic eye, please continue directing animations Zilleyon.
Also I hope this turns out into a trilogy. The second focusing on a bounty hunter chasing after them or the necromancer. The third with the main bad guy and his army.

Absolutely amazing, I was in awe after Derp's fight with the girl and even more after during the Derp vs Knight fight, Zilleyon just brings the fight to life, and for his first video I have to say this is easily the best animation I've seen on this channel in a long time, not that the others aren't good, but the clashes, particles, and the way the warriors flow with their weapons is just amazing, 11/10, please keep Zilleyon on the team, and keep up the amazing work.

Not gonna happen.
I love how each character has a purpose, depth, and all unique. They don't feel like they are filling in an empty spot but, in fact, are part of the story. We have been given the chance to know each character and therefore have something on the line when they are in the arena. The story telling alone makes this the best animation all year, and we haven't even spoken about the insane quality of the animation itself along with the composition, lighting, and sound design. Everything is just perfect.
This made me feel like a kid again. While I do still like newer SQM, this was like the magic of 2017 BPS all over again. Great job Zilleyon! -Tun

Really epic animation Zilleyon! The fights are super cool and impactful and the music choices are really good! The ending feels really intense and cool. Zilleyon's fight animations are always so impressively creative and fluid. This was really fun to watch.
You went above and beyond on this Zilleyon. I havn't been this blown away in a long time.
I have to commend Zilleyon on the absolutely fantastic music and sound effects in this animation. The music really drew me into the story and fitted the characters and scene well and the well defined sound effects of the clashing weapons immersed me into the scene as if i was in the colosseum.
I also love the style of animation that has no voice, just showing the depth of the characters with facial expressions and body language and occational hinting text.
