The "who were people triggering an SOS for" is probably a follow up to Garmin mentioning several times that you should absolutely press the button if you find people in need of assistance, from the chart it's good to see that a good chunk of calls are for third parties, which means people carrying inreach devices help others that would otherwise be at severe risk of not getting rescued

But what are the chances of finding another person, with a PLB or not, while bikepacking? Not good where I ride (Vancouver Island). Everyone in the boonies or away from safety should have a PLB. $15 a month is not a fortune.

We have two Inreach Mini's for riding our motorcycles, I prefer that over the messenger as I like the back up navigation. I also have an iPhone with the satellite communication, but 1) you can only use it in a very few countries and 2) it can't be used to inform the homefront.

I'd love to see alternative endings to films where they had an Inreach.
Tom Hanks rescued after a day in Castaway.
Leonardo gets airlifted out the woods after the bear attack in the Revenant.
    I'm sure there are more...

I carry the Zoleo device which has an SOS and is great for text/emailing when out of cell range. I think it also uses the Iridium network and costs a fraction of the price of a Garmin.

I don't think it's fair to say it "costs a fraction of the price" as that implies it's much cheaper. That just isn't the case. The Inreach Messenger is $100 more but is much more capable (includes a screen for no cell needed, etc). The subscriptions are very comparable with Inreach being cheaper in some use cases.

I definitely feel safer with my fenix watch, even on hilly fireroads close to the city. I hope this function remains unused :)
Also, yes! Thanks to EMTs! I live in a valley, next to so many hills, MTB trails, ski resorts and other sport facilities, and helicopters do go right over my apartment, especially around midnight.

I recall very early on the only bikepacking SOSs were from Bikepackers coming across other folk in desperate straights & some heartwarming rescues.

Enjoy all your content. Could you maybe look at trailers in a video. Hints tips reviews, help from commentors. I have purchased a topeak journey trailer for some future bikepacking. My theory is to keep the bike clean and no bags. The trailer actually looks more aero than any other setup. I have only used it locally so far but am planning longer trips. Ray from Australia.

A few other things would be interesting to know: 1 - cost to the rescued. If an helicopter is sent, who is paying for it? 2 - how many false alerts? or how many rescues that did not really need help? are people abusing the system? 3- how many failed rescues? You pressed SOS but cannot get help (or not getting help in time)?

I still wonder how these devices affect how people choose to push past what they think or believe is safe?

It's definitely a thing. At least for me, I've gone on trips I normally would not have without it. I've always stayed within my skill level, but there have been a couple of times that I've had to take a step back and remind myself that it's not a substitute for proactive planning.

What this data shows is how Garmin devices are distributed, not where some real emergencies happen.
