Solving Cicada 3301: Decoding the Internet's Greatest Mystery
Early in the morning of January 4th 2012, a strange message appeared on the internet. Just a few lines of text on an image, posted anonymously.
Hello. We are looking for highly intelligent individuals. To find them, we have devised a test.
There is a message hidden in this image.
Find it, and it will lead you on the road to finding us. We look forward to meeting the few that will make it all the way through.
Good luck.
3301
Many speculated that it was a recruiting tool for the NSA, CIA, MI6, or even the Masons.
But who was really behind it, and what was its purpose? Did it even have a purpose?
Whether it did or not, it didn’t matter. Because when you post a puzzle on the internet looking for “highly intelligent people”, that’s a challenge that’s simply impossible to resist.
So, the hunt for Cicada 3301 was on.

I was in the Navy during the Persian Gulf war and worked as a Cryptographer, and the Navy realized as did Cicada that Cryptographers got bored if they weren't challenged. So they created a group call puzzle box that sent us puzzles every week for us to solve and compete with other cryptographers, to keep us engaged and our minds sharp. I recall how excited everyone was in my division when they sent us puzzles to work on. The Navy had realized even back then that Mathematicians and programmers weren't the best at decryption, but instead artists, graphic designers and linguists were better at it, creative minds seem to have a better aptitude for cryptography.
I was a US Marine during Desert Storm, the Marine Corps realized that if we didn’t shoot anyone. We’d be bored.

@thomgizziz that is a very unkind thing to write, and you should really be ashamed of yourself.
As a security researcher, I’m always super impressed with your ability to articulate very complex cybersecurity and technical concepts for everyone but without over-simplifying them to a point where they lose context and meaning, AJ! This is incredibly difficult to do even for experts. Just wanted to give you a shout out for doing an amazing job educating people on topics such as these and inspiring the future generations of cybersecurity professionals! And for teaching people how to balance keeping an open mind but fostering skepticism about that’s satisfied with hard data and evidence! That’s super critical especially in fields like cybersecurity!
I’m not sure of your background, but it certainly wouldn’t shock me if we had shared aspects!
Can you imagine how much better the world would be if main media sources deep dived as much as the why files?? I mean they legit leave no stone unturned in terms of discovery, motives, science behind it, context, historical context, alternative pathways, regardless of the topic I know when I watch an episode I’m getting a nice genuinely thought out overview of the entire topic at hand. The world needs more channels like this on all topics.
Is it just me, or does each time the ‘WF?’ Logo comes up on screen, in my head I’m reading ‘wtf’…

I was one of the less patient solvers of this original run of puzzles. I enjoyed them and one of the papers with the QR code was in my hometown right across the street from where I worked at the time. It gave me chills to see that those coordinates were literally right across the street from where i normally parked, only to find the paper with the logo and QR code just stapled to a power pole. First time revisiting the subject since the original lemmino video, didn’t know they were solved either
They aren't solved though? At least, not all of them. Most of the pages of the Liber Primus remain undeciphered. Though, perhaps the explanation that what they were a group looking for people of compatible political alignment to turn into software developers to further their goals of privacy is satisfactory closure to who Cicada 3301 actually are. Or at least what their goals are. Which cipher was solved and which wasn't was already known for people who came from LEMMiNO's video.

Thanks for this great and thorough rundown on cicada. Knew bits of it before but not the whole picture. Think this is an interesting case of a rigorous selection process inadvertently selecting for the wrong traits. While they were selecting for highly proficient people, they were more specifically selecting for people who would do so without caring about any practical outcomes. But what they actually needed were people who could be motivated by an actual end goal - other than just solving another puzzle. A lot of selection processes in the real world suffer the same problem.
"we are looking for intelligent people" ... no you're looking for specific skills.
They’re looking for someone with a particular set of skills…
probably CIA or NSA
Also for people willing to do whatever it takes to achieve their objective. Notice how many of the steps involved a level of online risk?

When that cicada thing came out, I said that it was probably some club at MIT doing some kind of augmented reality game. Then I forgot about it. I guess I wasn't too far off.
It is a noble cause, but the wrong way to recruit people and it's pointless because there are actual people out there trying to fight for privacy, like that group that goes around London cutting the facial recognition cameras. Imagine spending hundreds of hours trying to solve multiple puzzles, winning and being rewarded an unpaid job to write code for someone else
Imagine not knowing about 3301 and you just find a poster thingy on the way to work
I'm sure many did, but the amount of people in the early 2010s who knew what C3301 was or even what a QR code was miniscule compared to today. Someone would look at it and probably think it's just a piece of art. I even bet C3301 put those pieces of paper up, which aren't weather resistant, shortly after they found that people discovered the coordinates to do minimal damage to the papers before they were torn off or blown/washed away.

Solving these kinds of puzzles requires a mathematically and logically adept brain. Not all of us have the ability to do the deep rooted logical problem solving not matter how hard we try! Another great show. Best entertainment on RUclips right now!
I was thinking the opposite. It doesn't take intellect or a high IQ, youre just using tools others have used countless times. Anyone can use a hammer, but not many are carpenters
I think the truth is in the middle. The key takeaway here is group effort(that includes those who made the tools, not just the ones using them). One person will come up with an idea or decipher a part of a mystery that opens the door for others. Through the power of collective effort and sharing information/experience, is humanity truly capable of incredible feats. This is a prime reason why I'm convinced that there are those who are focused on keeping us arguing among ourselves, because together, we are powerful enough to achieve anything.

I grew up in Little Rock Arkansas, where one of the laminated cicada papers was found. Near downtown Little Rock there's a pizza place called Vino's, about 50 yards East of that building was a light pole, and on that pole I actually saw that laminated paper with the cicada image on it. I'm just about to watch this episode but before I do I have to mention this. So I heard about this puzzle about 2 years ago and always thought it was super interesting. So I live just outside of Colorado Springs and I'm a mobile mechanic. I have a friend that has some cars he rents out on the Toro app. He parks them all in a lot near the colorado springs Airport in a buisiness park. I happen to be over there working on a car and as I was leaving I just happen to look off at a small outbuilding that is on the north west side of the airport on the backroad that runs parallel with the airport. I kind of just noticed it out of the corner of my eye as I passed and had to go around the block to make sure it was what I thought it was. It's a small old run down brick shed style building in the middle of a small field next to the airport. Painted on the side of the building that takes up the entire side of it is the same exact cecad a from this puzzle. Not like something similar. I'm talking the exact cecada. Not sure what it may mean but it sure was cool to see especially since I've heard about this story multiple times now in the past couple years. If anyone is interested in knowing where it is go on google maps and pull up these coordinates then look towards the airport. 38.8134109, -104.7236494 There is a small white building right next to the road with a blue bay door. On the wall that faces towards the south is the cecada. You can see it on google maps.
Assumed you were trolling but there it is on the white wall. It's not clear. But it could be just the same random image the puzzle makers used from the internet. Or maybe it's their headquarters now heh heh.
That's awesome. Have you ever stopped to check it out
@gfunk9114 you're one of them aren't you? And your comment is a clue to solve the liber primus, its too coincidental and uncanny that a random user just finds this video and happens to have a cicada related experience in real life particularly one as obscure as a painting on a wall somewhere. And a really SPECIFIC coordinates on Google earth, or it could just be too much paranoia from coffee on my part 😆
@SamBorgman with all the crazy stuff about what may actually be going on under the Denver Airport, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if there was some hidden base right there lol. Maybe that bay door opens up and drops down to a hidden base 🤔
Goosebumps continue!
Telling us that there is a hidden puzzle in your video is a great way to views thru the roof.
I'm looking through the comments to see did anyone find it 😂
@he-lium I'm doing the same lol so there are clearly framed images of cicadas in the transitions... thought about running the frame through that image guess site
@@he-lium Yes - but I can't share details or I'm at risk of being deselected.

I haven’t had time to look back but I bet it has something to do with what hecklefish said when he said that gibberish word.
Ive never seen a big list of patrons such as urs and that only tell how much peomke appreciate ur work
I love your content! I'm thoroughly addicted.
Though I know that I cannot be the only one who yells out the full version of WTF every time I see the logo.
You’re not! Lol
Your level of content is astounding. Please keep up your work so very much appreciated. You don’t just entertain but allow the ability to think and invite the cooperation of the viewer in your storytelling.
seriously, his videos are the most attention holding lectures if you were in a college setting but with fun topics. truly put together like a masterpiece. In our minds we think "oh another why files video" but they are arguably quick documentaries.
He pulls in around $60k to 80k/month. That's incentive enough to keep churning out videos.
@@ayoungtricknamedjim5498 I replied to you previously thinking it was in regards to a different channel. My apologies. I sincerely hope he makes that. He has a talent and puts in a lot of effort.
I thought my brain was going to melt after you ended the video saying there was a Cicada style puzzle in the video. I am guessing it has to do with Hecklefish and the Mayan word but I do not want to work that hard. But what a wonderful twist at the end to give us our own puzzle to try. Excellent episode. Hopefully someone will solve it and put the answer in the comments section.
Perhaps I need to rewatch the episode. But I could of sworn hecklefish was doing a magic show at first then reappeared in his bowl on the show?
I think it was the why files logo breaking apart after that. I’m not going to investigate that though
I think so too, first thing that stood out for me@@Limit5482

If someone can find the first clue that would help me tbh. I've done some ARG's in my time but I don't know if I want to go through the whole video frame by frame
Really cool@WF! The fact is that i was indeed entertained throughout, even though the entire premise of cicada and literally every part of it is beyond my understanding, is AWESOME. Thank you. And now i need some Tylenol... 😂
Yo AJ and Hecklefishs skits crack me up. Y’all do great work man and so informative. Keep it up!
We need an ANUNNAKI episode Please!!!👍🏻

This has to be one of, if not, the very best #1 quality RUclips channel in the world. The amount of research and information you pack into these is mind blowing. I’m at a loss for words. Please don’t ever stop making these.
The best in the world? How many languagues do you speak? lol
Quality of video is great even though he is the first to do quality video about this subject, Lemmino and Sumsub already did two great videos about it. But Iam glad I discovered this channel.
@@danisalusha5739ah a fellow Lemmimo and Sumsub viewer.
All his videos are conspiracy theories, what are you on?
I agree, behind Mr.Beast obviously :)
Hehehe I really enjoyed the "Get on with it!" joke. As always, great video. I'm slowly working my way through your catalogue and really enjoy your genuinely impartial position when sharing each topic with us, leaving us to make up our own minds! Please keep going :)
Thank you for covering this subject. I absolutely love your channel +1 subscriber! :)
I remember Cicada 3301... Completely forgot about it for the last, what, decade? It'll be interesting to hear AJ's dive into this one. If we left it to Hecklefish, he'd just say it was leading to the lizerdpeeple or crabcat
Best content ever. Your way of telling a story is truly incredible
Incredible? Interesting choice.
I followed this for a while. My guess was that it had to do with bitcoin or some sort of crypto currency. 🤔
I noticed clues to a puzzle hidden in the video while watching, so I was pleased to find out at the end that there was actually a puzzle hidden in the video. I'm not that advanced at puzzles so I won't try to figure it out, but I was pleased that I noticed!!
Thank you for this curiosity filled documentary.
omg what was it!!
@@kkarunamusicthey don't know lol
no like im curious as to what the clues even were @@ConsistentlyInconsistent21
I’ve seen a few videos on this topic and this is definitely the best!
I find that depth of nerdy curiosity that allows the brain to wrap its self around this stuff to be truly scary .
👻
Thank you for keeping The Why Files as visual as you do. Most creators opt for content you can just listen to, all the visual work you do is so good. Can't take my eyes off the story my guy.🤘
Agreed, this is worlds better than a podcast type episode with just a guy talking the whole time.
Imagine doing all that work thinking you'll get a job at the NSA...to end up being offered membership to a think tank no one has ever heard of nor cares about
And I imagine they do this free of charge.
not = nor
@@Notendop90 Fixed it, thanks!
"no one has ever heard of nor cares about"
yeah, that's kind of the point
@@TheRandomEmeraldI don't see why this would be the point.
You have heard of NASA, the NSA or the CIA, haven't you?
Has anybody ever attempted to check any cameras around those areas to try and identify who stapled them there? What kind of paper or ink was used? Hell, even the tape or staples could be clues. Were the orientation of the staples in themselves a clue? Were the posters oriented such that they were facing a certain direction? Just some food for thought.
Anyone got an answer to this
Saw a talk about Cicada at DEFCON this year, can't wait to see you break it down!
Yeah I saw it to a while ago on RUclips it only talks about the original puzzles and leaves out the rest of the unsolved pages
The military organization?
@@dubuyajay9964DEFCON is an annual computer security convention. It's held in Vegas every summer. They don't take credit cards for the entry fee, because of course they don't. It's fun.
This reminded me of the good old days of me just scrolling through the internet looking for stuff to watch until i came across a video detailing and documenting the Cicada 3301 mystery. That event completely changed the direction of my life in a sense that my love for mystery and puzzles, an interest that's otherwise depleted as a kid, was reignited, completely affecting my likes, goals and ideology i have right now.
Thank you for making this video and reminding me of a past i would've forgotten by this point!
Can't believe I didn't know about this channel til like a week ago, so much good stuff to go back and watch
The fact that he puts the ads in the beginning of the video makes the rest of it more enjoyable. Keep up the work dude.
took part in this back in the day, i was doing my doctorate in cybersecurity at the time and as you can imagine a class for of geeks we were hooked on this - it is always nice to see it great brought up more - if you liked this video i also highly suggest LEMMINO's video on the topic
Love love loved this episode!! The level of info of each puzzle phase is INSANE! I know you mentioned how much you enjoy this cicada topic and that level of interest and dedication SHOWED 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Right?! I couldn't have figured out all that shiz!! Haha. Maximum Brain Goo please!!
This channel is so entertaining and i love learning new things from it!
I think I've watched about every video just about from your channel and I love every single one your one of my favorites to watch 🖤
Y'all produce these really fast, but the quality is still great! Thank you guys for your hard work!
It could take weeks we don’t know how much time they put in.
Well here is one for you AJ - the "insect displayed and subliminal flashes throughout your video" are not of a cicada at all but are of what is variously referred to as "Death's Head Moth" or more correctly "Death's Head Hawk Moth" (of the genus Acherontia of which there are three species). Linking the actual insect depicted and going down that burrow could yield another interesting outcome! Cheers
Man that was fascinating!!....40 mins well spent..story telling was great😊
Entertaining, Informative, and my favorite YT.
