45 years ago, my mother taught me this recipe and I have taught my son. In our house when we say lets make cake - this is what we mean. We only use 6 Tblsp of cocoa, but the secret to making it taste great is to put in the baking soda and then putting the 2 Tblsp of vinegar over it so that you get the bubbling reaction. It makes a huge different in the taste and texture of the cake.
My Grandmother gave me this recipe in the late 70's. You just put all your dry ingredients in your baking pan. Make the 3 holes in the mix and pour in your liquid ingredients. Then mix up and bake. Really easy.
you can love the style and designs of back then but you should never wish that you lived in those eras because so many terrible things like ww1,ww2, holocaust, diseases, etc.. went on back then
We got this recipe from my grandmother. She called it “Three Hole Cake” . It is good if you use cold coffee instead of the water in the recipe. My daughters both won the county fair cake baking contest with this cake!
Watching you mix the ingredients reminded me of how mom used to do it, with a spoon. I’m 71, a young 71, so I was around in the 50’s. I’m Vegan so I’m trying this in a couple of days. Just found your channel today and I LOVE it 💕. Can’t wait to see more of your lifestyle. Have fun, and stay healthy. 😷🤗
I have been looking around to see if anyone has made these and lo-and-behold you have! I’m not surprised and I’m most definitely not disappointed! I’m trying this now and I appreciate that you are putting this out there. Wonderful work, Laci!
Laci I just watched this video and had to share my family story. My mom found this recipe in the daily news paper when I was still in Jr. High. I am now 66 years old. We used to according to recipe directions put each dry ingredient one by one in a 13x9 cake pan, mix all together, then one by one in three wells place the wet ingredients stir it all up and in the oven it went. The cake never came out of the pan when being served, there were 9 of us in our family so the cake went very quickly. Mom used to ice the cake with a broiled peanut butter icing or sometimes would just serve it plain nothing on it. Mom handwrote the recipe for each of us siblings and we got it as we left home and we still make this cake for our families now. I have to admit watching you make the cake I did cry some with so many memories of mom and us kids taking turns stirring and helping her with that cake. Thanks for the wonderful memory and letting us watching you make a cake that my family dearly loved eating.
I was just at my parents' house this past week. My mom said she was going to make a "wacky cake" and once i saw the cocoa powder and vinegar I knew I'd seen it somewhere before and lo and behold I was right! Thank you Laci Fay for documenting all these old treasures and giving the generations a common ground.
I love this recipe. The one I use calls for 2 cups of cold coffee in the cake instead of the water. I also sprinkle a mixture of cinnamon and sugar over the top before baking to give it a crunchy topping. It's also called a stir crazy cake.
Ms Laci does the preservation of time, the way of life, the way that most women can also be at, at times of their existence, for time is for them as well to breathe and learn and not to take it too fast, yet to take pieces of experiences and live with the way time teaches each time of every time in a humanely way and approach. To Ms.Laci continue to assist many with the importance of their time, for it is efficient to be surrounded by time of certainties.
I make the cake yesterday and it was simple and awesome! I am a vegan so it was a perfect recipe to try. I was born in 1958 and watching your videos is reminiscent of my childhood. Thank you so much Laci for the great content!
I used to make this all the time with my children when they were little ( they are going to be 33 and 31 this year) . I must make it again one of these days and surprise them . Thanks for sharing this . Greetings from The Canadian Maritimes
my grandma used to make this cake a lot, when i was growing up! any left over frosting she made for that cake would be frosting for graham crackers after school snacks then! my mom likes to make it sometimes too. we call it wacky devil's food cake in my family. i love your channel! :)
Egg gets such a bad rep for being raw in recipes but raw flour can also cause infections, that's why when some make edible cookie dough they toast the flour first.
10 tbs = 2/3 cup .... 16 tbs = 1 cup :) This recipes harkens back to when my grandmother spent time in the kitchen baking chocolate cake from scratch!!
That was the first recipe I learned when I was a kid. We called it crazy cake. Another one that's really good is mayonnaise cake. It's still probably one of my favorites.
I’ve made wacky cake for years. I love how it uses just one bowl and it’s so easy. Another finishing touch some folks may like is to sprinkle chocolate chips (your choice of the flavour of chips...white, classic, etc) over the top of the batter before baking. Let the cake cool a bit before eating as the hot chocolate chips could burn your mouth. I love your channel!
You should do a kitchen video. Show all your old dishes and appliances. I love the stove and your fridge looks bigger than the real ones from then but I love it. You can even set the table to show how it would have looked. I found an 1941 recipe book put out by the department of war. Has so many of these cool recipes. Years ago I got a free WW2 cookbook (was paper back of maybe 15 pages) free with a subscription to Good Ole Days magazine. This cake was in it and I have made it a lot over the years. It is very good. I add icing to it cause my kids love sweet and said we aint living in WW2 put it on!
My fridge is a “real one” haha. It is a 1955 ColdSpot. That recipe book sounds great! Oh yes I think this cake will be a go to in the future for me for sure!
Yay a vegan cake, so excited bc I’m vegan!!☺️ it looks so delicious I’m definitely gonna give it a try! LOVE all your baking videos in general and basically.. ALL your other videos as well! They always make me smile!! ☺️ Hope you and your family are also safe & well, can’t wait for more vintage fun!!
it's always entertaining to binge watch on ur videos..i was showing ur videos to my husband and told him how I love to have a vintage house same as yours. the decors, the appliances, ur beautiful kitchen and most of all ur hair and dress. they're very pretty.
OMG i love your aesthetic! I just found your channel and it's awesome, I love the olden days especially the 1920s-1950s i feel like i belong there sometimes! It's so cool that you live in that era with all the gadgets and everything.
My mom used to make this in the 70's and 80's when I was growing up. I taught my daughter (13) to make it a couple of years ago, its her favorite cake to make.
I have had a vintage Tupperware jello mold for a couple years now and finally made it today! You can’t tell in photos, but I made it in layers! You definitely inspired me to pull it out with your baking/kitchen gadgets series. ❤️
Laci Food History is a specialty of mine, especially military food history, what the soldier ate. So I LOVE you bringing out a 'depression' era / WWII era cake. I'm going to try it, but, go all vanilla instead of chocolate. So I found you from the video the other channel did about you and I saw your K style kitchen aid mixer. a great mixer, but, being born in the late 60's and remembering the early 70's that was not the mixer my mother had. ...so ... I sent her your video and talked to her and did a little wiki reading and posted this on the other channel: I talked to my mother, who got married in the early 50's and of course lived the whole decade with my father, she graduated high school in the 50's. Still has the poodle skirt. Her mixer was a Sunbeam Mix Master that was all the rage up till the early 50's, but... was still bought and sold all though the 50's and the 60's, its the one where you 'licked the beaters' with the twin beaters. Even though kitchen aid did start in 1932 it did not take on its iconic shape until the K model in the early 80's and this is what you see in the ladies house in the videos. Laci needs an update. So Laci, here are some on ebay. I know you love your kitchen aid, I do as well, but.... period specific. :) The link is long, so I'll put it at the end, even in the 70's and early 80's I remember being in the homes of 'old ladies' that were part of my mothers quilting group and they STILL had stoves from the 20's, 30's, 40's etc.... Still a gas stove, but the type that was styled on a wood stove but had modern burners in it, well, early 20th century burners that were lit with a match (next to the stove) or had a pilot light. So 20's, 30's, 40's vintage is 100% appropriate for a 50's home. Like you said, they last. I know a thing or two about refrigeration AND the type of refrigerator you have. If your fridge dies, an HVAC guy, who's a bit of a craftsman, could put a modern 134a or 410 refrigerant (or even propane, yes, its safe) into your 1950's 'shell' of a refrigerator. in fact, instead of drawing 10 to 20 amps when on, it would draw 1/2 to 2 amps. You might have to upgrade the insides, but you can still keep the style. Laci, you are to be COMMENDED on finding a life style, a hobby, a way of life, that you truly enjoy and get to do it on a daily basis. To share your passion with others on youtube is only a way of further enriching that love of yours and encourage others to pursue a dream that they might have, no matter how 'wacky' it seems. If its what makes you happy, then so be it. 98% of the population is miserable in what they do. Its right in the Constitution as a fundamental right, Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. Job well done Luci. Please, continue to share. Once this virus thing is done with, and you can get to some 'nursing homes' or 'assisted care facilities' I would HIGHLY encourage you to do SIMPLE video or even just audio discussion and interviews with people that lived through the depression, WWII, the 50's and learn first hand from these people, before they are gone, and record and relive that part of our LIVING history. They will LOVE to tell you the stories of their life. www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2334524.m570.l1313.TR12.TRC2.A0.H0.XSunbeam+Mix+Master.TRS0&_nkw=Sunbeam+Mix+Master&_sacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&_osacat=0&_odkw=Sunbeam+Mastermix+
Hi! That sounds like a very interesting topic! I know my kitchen aide is modern. I got it for my wedding. I thrifted a vintage sunbeam a few months ago, so I will work on getting it cleaned up and test it out soon! That’s good to know about the fridge. I’ll keep that in mind for future! Thanks for sharing!
I just made this cake and let me tell you, it's dense, moist and delicious. I added cinnamon and sugar topping like another sub said. I like it. Thanks for the recipe!
Thank you for your recommendation! It was fabulous! When I made it with brunch, I baked it in a 12 inch cast iron skillet. Thank you for being so fabulous my friend!
I love your videos. You remind me of my mom and the way she dressed and our home when I was very little. I make this cake a couple of times a month. Only my recipe calls for lemon juice instead of vinegar. I also make a buttercream frosting to top it, which was popular in that era, powdered sugar, butter, vanilla and a couple of tablespoons of milk! Delicious with a glass of milk!
I made this recipe some time ago, it was called a cockeyed cake. From the I hate to cook book (uk) and mixed it right in the baking pan. No washing up! Just as delicious.
Your videos are perfect, Laci! I've tried some of your recipes and the result was delicious. Sending u love in these difficult times! Stay safe and be kind ya all❤️
Hello Laci!! Such a beautiful vintage kitchen!! The cake looks delish and I will have to try this!! Thank you for your wonderful uploads . Please keep them coming because they are definitely refreshing 💜
I started making this cake in the beginning of the year!! Its sooooo yummy, cheap and easy! I use and 8×8 pan and mix everything in that pan too. Its so neat how the vinegar makes the flavor pop. I dont enjoy cooking so wAcky cake is great since its so quick n easy. ☺
New subbie! Love your channel! Ive been into depression era/50s era cooking the last 2 years and lets just say it’s helped us get through what we are going through. Making meals from hardly anything and it still be so satisfying!
My daughter and I made this tonight and oh my goodness it was wonderful. Our batter was not as thick and the cake came out fluffy. Not sure if it was the vinegar, we used the regular white vinegar, but it was yummy and we will make it again. Not great for my hips. Thank you for this video and please do more recipes!!! This is a keeper.
The cake is out of the oven, and it tastes really delicious.I love the density of the cake so chocolaty tasting ,soft sponge. Good find, and thank you for sharing! 👍🏻 your new subscriber🤗
Hi!!! You have the patients of a saint!!! I remember when I packed away my measuring cups and had to do this. Uggghh!!! Shortcut for anyone who needs it: 10 Tablespoons equals 1/2 cup, plus 2 Tablespoons. Thanks for this, and I'm going to try it. The batter is safe to eat too! Yunmy bowl and spoons, or beaters. Reminds me of childhood.
Hi!! Oh nice! Haha thank you!! I was quite excited to taste the batter haha. Yes! My brother and I used to each take a beater after my mom got done mixing.
My daughter is in lock down with me & we're getting a home delivered grocery order tomorrow. I've ordered lots of baking stuff so she can learn to bake. I'm so happy that I've just stumbled upon your RUclips channel. We can experiment with some of your recipes now too :-)
This looks so good and moist, I would never though making a cake with vinegar as part of the ingredients would taste good. So this a game changer for me. Thanks for sharing, I'm gonna try this soon. ☺️👍🏾
Ive used a very similar recipe! I normally make either cupcakes with it, or in a sheet cake like you made with 1 inch sized dollops of sweetened cream cheese dotted all over it...SO GOOD!
Yay I finally had the chance to try this recipe! It's really really good, I would never be able to guess there's no egg or milk! Mine turned out not very sweet, but I think that's nice. Once again, thank you very much for this video!
This cake is my family's signature cake. It can also be mixed in the baking pan you're using. Just make 3 grooves the length of the pan with the back of a spoon and pour your wet ingredients in the grooves. Stir and bake in same pan. It's SO good! It's really moist and no need for icing or toppings. We usually put a piece in a bowl and cover it with milk like cereal. I have doctored it up for a simple birthday cake and made cream cheese icing. Can't go wrong with this cake.
That looks so yummy! As long as no vinegar taste comes through after baking! It's pretty too, nice job! I'd give it a try but I live with my niece and nephew and any type of chocolate makes them insane! Thank you for sharing!
That is a simple recipe to follow, and quite fitting for the times that we are in now. Something sweet to cheer us up. PS: A scoop of vanilla ice cream can go well with this cake too! :D
Love your baking videos! My Grandmother used to make this but it was always called Vinegar Cake. Looks great with strawberries. I will have to try it with a whipped cream topping and the strawberries!
45 years ago, my mother taught me this recipe and I have taught my son. In our house when we say lets make cake - this is what we mean. I did exactly that. The cake came out so good.
My Grandmother gave me this recipe in the late 70's. You just put all your dry ingredients in your baking pan. Make the 3 holes in the mix and pour in your liquid ingredients. Then mix up and bake. Really easy.
That was nice and straight forward, it looks delicious. More 'vintage' cookery videos please! Thoroughly enjoyed this x
O Jesse's more Plice!
Oh I’m glad! It was really simple and quick to make!
@@LaciFayTheVintageGirlNextDoor my favorite thing from back then was the food!
Laci Fay The Vintage Girl Next Door 😎my grandfather lived in the azores in 1947 doesn’t remember making this cake
I love how you live in the old days. 😊
I agree, I think living vintage is better than living modern when it comes to clothes, and home design.

Oooooh I like the idea of using coffee instead of water, thanks!
Donna Ripp how much coffee?? The same amount as water?

The cool thing is that you can lick the leftover batter since there’s no raw egg.
Egg gets such a bad rep for being raw in recipes but raw flour can also cause infections, that's why when some make edible cookie dough they toast the flour first.
Raw egg doesn't stop me! I like livin' on the edge! Lol
Raw egg in batter is fine, I grew up liking the bowl or batters, so did my mom. We're both alive and healthy, lol.
10 tbs = 2/3 cup .... 16 tbs = 1 cup :)

I also make a buttercream frosting to top it, which was popular in that era, powdered sugar, butter, vanilla and a couple of tablespoons of milk! Delicious with a glass of milk!
Obsessed with your channel 😍 I know what I’m watching when I get off work.
Fabulous Miss Lacy! You are adorable!! Cake looks great!
Thanks so much lovely! I was really happy with how it turned out!
I do love your vintage stove! And I am definitely going to try the ration cake!
“We are going to be making a WWII depression cake.”
If I didn’t know what this was, I would get the rat poisoning ready
I made this recipe some time ago, it was called a cockeyed cake. From the I hate to cook book (uk) and mixed it right in the baking pan. No washing up! Just as delicious.
Your videos are perfect, Laci! I've tried some of your recipes and the result was delicious. Sending u love in these difficult times! Stay safe and be kind ya all❤️

Love all your videos! The cake looks yummy! Love your pink apron!!
Thank you! It really was a yummy cake. I’m going to have to make it again soon.

I love this cake... it reminds me of a brownie.
I am going to have to try that recipe. Thanks for sharing!! Hope you and your family are staying safe and healthy. 🙂
You should for sure! You’re very welcome. Take care!!
Works great as a lemon cake too
My daughter is in lock down with me & we're getting a home delivered grocery order tomorrow. I've ordered lots of baking stuff so she can learn to bake. I'm so happy that I've just stumbled upon your RUclips channel. We can experiment with some of your recipes now too :-)
Thank you for this recipe💕 I will bake it soon 🍰😊✨
This looks so good and moist, I would never though making a cake with vinegar as part of the ingredients would taste good. So this a game changer for me. Thanks for sharing, I'm gonna try this soon. ☺️👍🏾
It was really tasty!
You are too adorable in your pinny doll! Always a winner with anything chocolate in my book but this cake looks great! 😘 xx
Ahh thanks so much my sweet friend!! It was a yummy cake!
Laci Fay The Vintage Girl Next Door 😋💋
Looked like nice cake love your apron and yellow top
I love this recipe! Thank you. I'm into everything vintage even though I'm only 11.
Ive used a very similar recipe! I normally make either cupcakes with it, or in a sheet cake like you made with 1 inch sized dollops of sweetened cream cheese dotted all over it...SO GOOD!
I'm totally making this cake today! I will vlog the experience and tag your video in it! Yay!
Yay!! Good luck!
Yay I finally had the chance to try this recipe! It's really really good, I would never be able to guess there's no egg or milk! Mine turned out not very sweet, but I think that's nice. Once again, thank you very much for this video!
Carrie Granger 🙃
Now I know how to make cake when there are no eggs in the house. Bless you, angel!
Yes!! Such a handy recipe. Very good too!
Always enjoy your posts! Thanks.
Thank you!
I personally like heavier cakes. I can't wait to try it!!!
You’re such a doll! Thank you for sharing this video and recipe.
Thanks so much babe!
Looks so good!!!! Love your kitchen it is sooooo adorable!!!!!!!
Thanks so much babe!!
I just loveeeeee it all your house is perfection!🐩
That looks so yummy! As long as no vinegar taste comes through after baking! It's pretty too, nice job! I'd give it a try but I live with my niece and nephew and any type of chocolate makes them insane! Thank you for sharing!
It was really good. No vinegar taste at all. Maybe since it’s unsweetened cocoa it wouldn’t be so bad?
I actually made this cake last week it's so yummy!
Oh nice!! It really is!
Now I need some cake!!! Yum, going to try this my friend!
Yes!! It was really yummy. 😊
That is a simple recipe to follow, and quite fitting for the times that we are in now. Something sweet to cheer us up.
PS: A scoop of vanilla ice cream can go well with this cake too! :D
It really was quick and easy! Oh I agree. Ice cream and cake for the win!
