Radiation is really one of two things - particles moving very fast (like the beta particle in this example) or waves (like x-rays) that are emitted when energy is released.
Isotopes like Tritium are unstable because they have one extra neutron, this neutron has a chance of turning into a proton because nature hates instability. When this happens, a beta particle is released.
Half life is the time it takes for half of the quantity of an isotope to turn into naturally turn into something else.

I approve of using Tucker for reference as a Ravens fan :-)
that website looks familiar. 🤔
Nice Half-life and Justin Tucker references
That electron causes cellular damage at about an inch or so. Gets stopped by a sheet of paper.
Alpha particles get stopped by your skin so any cuts just put a plaster on it. Need to wear a respirator though to prevent inhalation. Beta particles can burn the skin so brush yourself regularly or wear a CBRN suit and of course respirator. Beta is the big killer in the long term of unprotected civilians post attack as huge amounts of it is blown around. It can destroy huge swathes of contaminated farmland and crops. It might not be powerful but long periods of exposure causes a lot of damage to you.
Gamma and x-rays are very powerful but produced in the initial explosion and can only be stopped by shielding and distance like being deep underground and preferably far away. Neutron bombs produce a lot of these to kill humans leaving infrastructure and vehicles for further use by your own forces.

Some people are just great teachers, whether they realize it or not. Crazy tho, thinking back I can say i had maybe 4 great teachers. All taught differently, but you actually remember them and their class because they made it entertaining instead of dull. My best example is my U.S. History teacher in H.S. would always throw in these crazy but true historical facts/stories... Like how in the civil war they amputate everything, so there would be litteral mounds of arms and legs outside the medical tents.

Pro edit Ryan. I liked the visuals and the pop culture references. Very slick.
You're really knowledgeable in a lot of subjects, I respect that.
Actually only trace amounts of tritium are used.
Main Thermonuclear weapon fuel is Lithium Deuteride (LiD), i.e chemical compound of lithium and deuterium. When activated, the fusion reaction begins with deuterium fusing with tritium. As a result of this fusion, a number of fast neutrons emitted. These neutrons hit the LiD, lithium captures this neutron and almost immediately becomes tritium which reacts with deuterium in the compound with much more neutrons being emitted. Very elegant solution. Tritium is very expensive and its global quantity is measured in tens of kilograms.
The neutron source that initially breeds the tritium is deuterium deuterium fusion. It's only in the later stages of the fusion burn that the tritium number density becomes sufficient that the D-T reactivity exceeds the D-D reactivity and then dominates the fusion reactions.
@@Evan_Bell I just wanted to mention that tritium is not a main part. It is necessary, of course, but I would not count on tritium decay to helium-3 to confidently say that Russian nuclear weapons are out of use.
What triggers the nuclear fusion is fission reaction which bombards the Lithium Deuteride and some tritium.
@@borisreid3053 If it is the case that Russia has no tritium (which I doubt), it'd degrade the yields all of their strategic and some of their tactical weapons by several several orders of magnitude.
The fission from the primary compresses the fusion fuel. The sparkplug heats it. Fission doesn't contribute significantly to the neutron bombardment that breeds tritium from lithium.
@@borisreid3053 The fusion fuel in the first stage is a tritium/deuterium gas mixture. More tritium is made later in the second stage, but there is definitely tritium used in the first stage.
This tritium needs to be produced, stored, and replaced. This is the tritium in question when referring to the functionality of Russia's nuclear weapons. If they haven't been maintaining their tritium, the second stage in the weapons probably won't detonate.

I just noticed that you are a fluffier Gordon Freeman. That's awesome.
Minor correction: The "extra neutron" becomes an electron and a proton pair. The proton remains in the core and makes it Helium-3.
Read stories about helium shortages. Is He-3 stable maybe good substitute for He? I have a feeling this is one of those "if you gotta ask" questions and the answer is no..
Thanks Ryan. You're a gifted natural teacher regardless of the subject matter.

If you watched the video and are reading this you just graduated college chemistry. Congratulations.
Even tho I don’t need the dumb pop culture references, I think it makes your videos a lot more accessible to people that don’t know stuff while still doing it in a smart way. Good stuff dude
Ryan I love your videos, but justin tucker broke my heart last year when he hit a 66 yard field goal against the lions. Thanks for reminding me of the pain that still lingers.
Dam dude you are amazing. The amount of time you spent in school boggles my mind.
I had a test on this stuff today. Wish it came up a little earlier
Thanks for bringing this up. Science is important!
Thank you Ryan. I couldn't remember what was lost when one element decays into another, whether it was electrons, neutrons, positrons or quarks. You answered my question and explained it very well, to this non-science-educated secretary.
I never knew exactly how radioactive decay works… that’s really fascinating
I had a Texas Instrument digital watch purchased in the late 70's, the display was backlit with tritium gas in a sealed membrane behind the LCD display. I lost the watch about 12 years later but it was still glowing strong at that time. Probably getting pretty dim by now. :)
The weird math of elemental half life is that after 12 years, you’ll lose half of your original amount of tritium but after another 12 years, you’ll only lose 1/4. Then 12 years after that you’ll only lose 1/8 of the original amount you started with but then again, you’ll also only have 1/8 of the original amount as well.
This really makes me wish I'd paid attention in my high school science classes. I understand the basic stuff about atoms, but the fine details of radioactivity elude me.
Mind blown. Thanks for geeking out!! 😂
Half-Life is amazing! Loved the second one with the physics and source engine haha

Nice half life reference, that made my day a bit better
Beta particles are relatively harmless, they only penetrate a out 1/2 inch in bare skin. An outer jacket is usually enough to shield beta particles.
Same thoughts exactly except if ingested or somehow inside your body then Beta particles become an issue. Gamma particles is the bad boy
Excellent layman's explanation.. I wish more physics teachers could explain it like you ..
you teach very well McBeth
love your Justin Tucker reference! I keep forgetting that you’re based in Maryland, as am I 😉 Great info (as usual) about radioactive isotopes ☢️
Gordon does not need to hear all this, he is a highly trained professional.
Yeah! Not easy to find a video o the matter so factually correct.
Only one detail, not all beta decays have the same energy, depending on the isotope the beta particle will have different average speed, measured commonly inelectron volts, or powers of it, KeV, MeV, etc
thanks for all of your information
Remember, a half life is a constant, so it will never be completely 'gone'.
Dude I love your vids
If something is less radioactive, it decays slower, because its emitting less, if something is more radioactive it decays faster, because its emitting more.
Ask the Free Man why he wears a special suit...
Rise and shine Mr McBeth, rise and... shine...
More to it than that but very good simple explanation
Happy to see you got the decay maths correct! Slightly over 5% of decay in a year :)
Ahhh hello Gordan Freeman... we just send the sample to the test chamber
I remember the sight device for 60mm mortar the numbers on the deflection ring glowed in the dark as did the attachment on the aiming poles for night fire missions.
I had a high school chem teacher once describe radioactive decay like a pile of oranges at the supermarket. Unstable isotopes are like an unstable pile, and when the pile collapses what remains is a more stable isotope, and the oranges that roll onto the floor are the radioactive byproducts of decay. Image has stuck with me for years.
I cant help it.... I really like this cats videos.....thanks for posting
Great video keep them coming
Love the tucker reference.
The damage caused by beta radiation isn’t because of the momentum of the electron or not directly but because it acts as a free radical.
Gordon says “this crowbar gives you half life”
Gordon Freeman Approves
Tritium (and deuterium in equal amounts yielding 17.6MeV per fusion event, compared to around 200MeV per U-235/Pu239 fission event) is used in our "dial a yield" tactical nuclear weapons in place of solid lithium6 deuteride, so the second stage can be de-tuned to lower its yield by reducing the amount of fusion fuel available. Those weapons don't have a U-238 jacket for third stage fission and are usually called "neutron bombs" because they can irradiate troops otherwise protected in armored vehicles. So those type of weapons must be serviced regularly due to decay of the tritium into HE3, which won't fuse at the temperatures and pressures created in the Hohlraum. In fact it absorbs a neutron, thereby damping the reaction, so it needs to be removed on a regular schedule. However, HE3 fusion is the likely reaction we'll use for industrial fusion, precisely because that reaction doesn't fire neutron bullets into the containment vessel, crapping up the steel on an elemental level.
Ryan doesn't need to hear all this. He's a highly trained professionaaaaal.
You breakdown simple concepts/statements in such clear ways that make me wish you were my chemistry teacher in High School! He was not a good teacher!
