Oxaliplatin is a common chemotherapy drug often administered via a mediport. Side effects include nausea, possible lower blood counts, and sensitivity to cold things (touch and drinking). Over many cycles of the medicine, you may have nerve sensitivity.
Transcript:
Common chemotherapy called oxaliplatin. Been around for 10 or 15 years, only IV, and really is pretty hard on peripheral veins. So, your doctor probably will want you to have a mediport put in, because it's much easier if you have one of these special catheters, than putting it in a regular IV.
So, this medicine, a little bit of nausea associated with it, so your doc will be recommending some anti-nausea medicine to take before and maybe after. Not really a hair loss drug so much. But on the night that you get it, you will go home, and when you put your hands in the freezer, you will know what we're talking about. You're very sensitive to cold. When you touch something cold, or drink something cold, it feels funny. And it can last for several days.
So, it's not really hurting anything, but most people say ah, I'm going to stay away from the cold for a few days after each dose of the oxaliplatin.
Now, over many, many, many cycles of the medicine, you can begin to get nerve toxicity, where it really is numb, tingly, and people can have trouble buttoning buttons and the like. So, this is not something we want. It is hard to predict, so it's hard for us to say this is when it'll happen, or that's when it'll happen. And I have to tell you that sometimes we've stopped the medicine before people get nerve toxicity, then only to find out that a month or two later the nerve toxicity starts.
So, we try to use the oxaliplatin medicine wisely, but at the same time avoid that nerve toxicity. So, a little bit of nausea, can drop blood counts. Not much in the hair loss department. But we all focus a lot on the neuropathy of this medicine. - Наука
Feels funny hell it is excruciating the pain and the pins and needles in the hands and feet
As well as bouts of blindness for 10-40 seconds
This is waaaay underplayed in my experience! Extreme sensitivity to cold immediately on getting home, “freezer” you have to be kidding me!! Don’t even breathe near the fridge. If you have even room temperature water have a heat pack on hand for fingers and lips. The worst though - not even mentioned here is the throat spasms causing breathing and swallowing difficulty, very distressing. I am only on cycle three and the is NO WAY I will be having more than that !
I'm starting my first cycle this coming Thursday. Do you have any advice for the first infusion?
How are you doing? My dad just had his first infusion today. So far only nausea. He was recommended 6 treatments in total.
Thanks for your message Corinne - Sorry that I didn’t notice it at the time of posting. I hope that your treatment went well.
Thanks for your comment today E.F. And I send good wishes for your Dad and his programme of treatment.
I know that the Oxaliplatin “experience “ can vary with some potential symptoms not occurring at all, some mild in some though significant in other people. The type of cancer being treated and number of infusions will no doubt be factors too. For me - with lower bowel cancer I had 4 “cycles” of Oxaliplatin which had followed a course of radiotherapy and tablet form chemotherapy. My treatment finished in April this year and I have had C.T. and M.R.I. scans with scope investigations since which all show me to currently be “clear” of any sign of the cancer, (praise the Lord), these “insurance” procedures are continuing…..I was to.d for 2 years from April 2021. For me, the adverse reactions to the infusions were cumulative with the first infusion with only mild reactions, after infusion three I was very reluctant to have the fourth one and told my Oncologist. I was advised not to have the 4th infusion and told most of the “work” to deal with possible return “issues” would be done by the chemotherapy tablets anyway. Best wishes to all patients and their loved ones traveling this road. Andy F
It is different for everyone, but I agree the neuropathy here is way underplayed. Thanks for keeping it real.
Starting chemo in Sydney Australia 🇦🇺 on Monday with this as part of my chemo recipe....
I had loss of vision in right eye sporadically.. like a film over the eye. Also experienced the cold, and developed a yeast rash in groin area. Doc took me off after first treatment and over to oxyiplatin. Thank you Doc.
Same issues with intense nausea and vomiting for four days
im having the same issue and I took my self off the treatment today. Its very scary
I am getting the same on the second cycle. The yeast infection on my testicles has been tough to manage but it's finally getting better. Tingling in fingers and occasionally eye lids, not cold induced. Let's see what my doc has to say. Vomiting is worse on the second cycle, it seems I need 2 meds to control it now (only needed 1 on the first cycle). Luckily I only need 4 cycles. God bless you all!
When you are undergoing chemo therapy it is a good idea to fast for at least 24 hours before treatment. That usually alleviates the nausea and fatigue. Try it and you will see
@@johnreidy2804does this mean no food at all including drinks such as ensure? Can we still drink water during the fast? Can we start eating the day of chemo? Thanks
Very clear and concise esp. compared to other sources. I wonder about the Folfox vs Copox camprison and efficacy with differnent cancer types
I had twelve treatments of 5FU (I assume the FU stands for fuck you) and Oxaliplatin, didn't have any trouble other than being extremely sensitive to anything cold for a few days after each treatment. After approximately 10 treatments of the 5FU/Oxaliplatin I practically coded in the treatment center twice and was placed into ICU a few days each time, it was determined that I went into some sort of systemic shock, finished the remainder of my treatments with the 5FU in pill form with no problems. It's been 1 1/2 years later and I'm doing much better except for the chemo induced periperal nephropathy, all scans have been clear. I wish all of you about to go through any treatments with Oxaliplatin the best of luck, may God be with you.
@goodfriend I'm going in for my first infusion this Thursday. Do you have any advice.
@@corinnehernandez4549 How did you make out with your cancer treatment friend?
start physical therapy before develop weakness , may not be able to drive, may need a walker at home. change in taste. numbness, pins and needles in hands and feet. if severe may feel like pain. it may improve but will persist . may loose balance easy. (sensory ataxia).
what is the mechanism for the cold sensitivity?
It caused my jaw to lock up completely and spasm every time I tried to eat.
I had jaw lock the first time i tried to eat after it but it only lasted for a bite or two.
I am 2 treatments in with CAPOX. I gotta say I am sick as a dog for about 6 days (intense nausea). Vomiting sometimes. I don’t like vomiting up the capecitabine since that is supposed to be working in conjunction with the oxaliplatin but sometimes I gotta let it out. Sensitivity to cold is minor so far. Honestly I only have 4 more sessions to go and I can’t wait to be done.
I'm going to start CAPOX treatment this Thursday. Do you have any advice as to what I should expect for the first infusion?
Did u loose all ur hair?
@@corinnehernandez4549. I see no one replied. How did you make out?
I took an extremely bad reaction to Oxaliplatin twice, was very scary and was therefore stopped. I continued with oral medication and the orher day I was given the good news I was cancer free.
Hi Jan, how are you doing these days, still cancer free I hope, may God continue to bless you.
Hi, Yes I'm well thank you. To have a scan in July but I'm confident all well. Thank you so much for asking, very kind
@@liketotan hi Jan so did you take the pills instead of the same medicine? My brother needs this treatment for cancer 😢😢😢
Oh my goodness me too. I went into anaphylaxis shock.
Are you still "cancer free" friend?
Im having excessive mucus and heavy chest discomfort,as well as sharp jaw pain in the salivary glands, first
treatment feels like someone broke my nose
Do you have an update?
