THREADING THE OVERLOCKER

  • In this video we will show you how to thread Chinese overlocker/serger Meishi GN1-1. It’s not hard, but it’s tricky.
    ►NOTE◄ First unplug the power cord for safety!
    Use tweezers to thread the overlocker easier.
    ☼ Threading the upper looper: 0:08
    ►NOTE◄ Removing the side plate is optional You can thread the upper looper without removing the side plate. However, if you remove it - use a magnetic screwdriver, because the screws are very small and you can lose them.
    ☼ Threading the needle: 2:48
    In my experience I found that the tension dial on the needle thread should be tighter than the upper and lower loopers. But this may vary for the different types of threads.
    ☼ Threading the lower looper: 4:27
    ►NOTE◄ The flywheel must be rotated only towards the back of the machine /clockwise/

    You can make a video where you explain how to adjust the presser so that it rises. If you already have it, you can tell me what it is. You explain very well. Thank you.

    • @ArtOfClay
      @ArtOfClay  2 года назад +1

      The machine is designed for sewing only fabrics up to 4mm thick. Therefore the presser foot can be only raised slightly.
      If it can't be lifted at all, you can try to reduce the presser foot pressure by slightly unscrewing the screw that sticks out behind the needle bar (on top of the machine). (If you look from the side, the screw leads directly to the lever to which the lifting pedal is connected).

    Can you please do a video explaining the tensions and the best practices and uses?
    Your video helped a lot and this machines is pretty good when it works

    • @ArtOfClay
      @ArtOfClay  3 года назад +1

      I don't know how to explain it in a video. But you can try the following (this is my answer from another comment, about the tension): Simply, you should look carefully at the seam. On the top side of the fabric, there will be the upper looper and the needle thread. On the other side of the fabric, you will see the lower looper thread and the needle thread. The needle makes only straight stitches so the needle thread is the straight left line on the top side of the fabric
      (the same line when you turn the other side of the fabric). The looper threads are triangular/drops shaped. You need to see (onto the seam) if the threads are too loose or too tight and adjust the tension dials.
      You can use different colored threads and see the results on the seam.
      * The upper looper's tension dial is that onto the right side of the machine. The needle tension dial is on the top of the machine and to reach the lower looper tension dial, you should open the door/cover on the left side (near the hinges).
      ** Another thing to know - (It may be working only for me), but my needle tension is very tight when I try to pull the thread, from the tension dial (NEVER PULL THE THREAD FROM THE NEEDLE) I have a feeling that it will break, so you can try to tighten the needle tension dial.
      PS. Sorry for the late response.

    • @ArtOfClay

      I don't have a video about setting the tension. I just don't know how to explain it the way I want to be explained... Simply you should look carefully at the seam. On the top side of the fabric, there will be the upper looper and the needle thread. On the other side of the fabric, you will see the lower looper thread and the needle thread. The needle makes only straight stitches so the needle thread is the straight left line on the top side of the fabric

      You can use different colored threads and see the results on the seam.
      * The upper looper's tension dial is that onto the right side of the machine. The needle tension dial is on the top of the machine and to reach the lower looper tension dial, you should open the door/cover on the left side (near the hinges).
      ** Another thing to know - (It may be working only for me), but my needle tension is very tight when I try to pull the thread, from the tension dial (NEVER PULL THE THREAD FROM THE NEEDLE) I have a feeling that it will break, so you can try to tighten the needle dial.

    I’ve followed your instructions carefully and they’ve been very helpful.
    But why does my thread cut every 5 mins? It’s frustrating to have to keep rethreading every other minute. What could be the cause and what do you recommend?

      Thank you for your feedback. I assume you're experiencing issues with the thread on the lower looper. Here are a couple of steps that might help resolve the problem:
      Firstly, check and adjust the tension. Incorrect tension can cause thread breakage so make sure the thread tension is properly adjusted.
      Secondly, make sure the thread isn't old or dried out. Test its strength by gently pulling it; if it appears weak or aged, switching to a fresh spool of thread might solve the issue. Even if the thread seems strong and visually fine, different brands can affect performance, so trying another spool might be beneficial.
      I hope these steps will assist in resolving the problem.

      @@ArtOfClay Its the thread that does directly into the needle that keeps breaking. It's my first time using the machine so I'm not sure where the tension is or how to adjust it. Do you have a video for that?

      Then, you can check if your needle is not blunt and if it is installed correctly. I don't have a video about setting the tension, but there are 3 knobs used to regulate the tension off all three threads.
      This comment may help you with setting the tension: (this is my answer from another comment, about the tension): Simply, you should look carefully at the seam. On the top side of the fabric, there will be the upper looper and the needle thread. On the other side of the fabric, you will see the lower looper thread and the needle thread. The needle makes only straight stitches so the needle thread is the straight left line on the top side of the fabric (the same line when you turn the other side of the fabric). The looper threads are triangular/drop-shaped. You need to see (onto the seam) if the threads are too loose or too tight and adjust the tension dials.
      You can use different colored threads and see the results on the seam.

    Hi! Thank You so much for making the video. I was just thinking whether to buy it or not cause without the thread instruction it would take a week at least to figure it out. But I don´t have this kind of table and so doesn´t the person I am buying from. Does this machine work just on a normal table as well (without the hole in table)? Or will the engine stop me somehow? Also I am missing a thread stand, as it takes a month to deliver from abroad, but there is no good affordable thread stand in my small country. Could it work without a thread stand as well? Or what alternative would you recommend for thread stand? Thank You so much!!!

      Hi, thank you for your comment! The machine is sturdy and built to last a long time. However, it's important to note that it's heavy and lacks modern conveniences like easy-to-use buttons and knobs for changing settings quickly. It's best suited for those who don't need to adjust settings frequently. Initially, it can be temperamental, but once you're familiar with it, it's an excellent machine.
      The engine is attached to the back, so it doesn't need to be mounted on a specialized table. I have mine on a regular desk, and I simply made holes for waste fabric and pedals, though these aren't necessary.
      When I purchased the machine, it was mounted on a wooden board with a thread stand. The machine requires a thread stand for smooth thread flow from the spools. If you don't have one, you can make a DIY stand from a metal clothes hanger or wire. Just ensure the threads flow smoothly from the bobbins to the machine.

    We have same sewing machine after following this method my machine wont make chain? What's the possible problem? Btw, very clear tutorial easy to follow. ❤

    • @ArtOfClay

      Check if the needle is inserted correctly. You can also change it (if it's dull or bent). Check the needle tension too. When you thread the machine, all the threads must go under the presser foot.
      It can be also a problem with the timing.
      These are the things I can think of.

      @@ArtOfClayplease what could be the problem for the last thread cutting , after following your tutorial I used same method to thread mine, but I noticed that the thread from the back kept cutting after 2inch of weaving, I just bought my machine newly and the needle was set up from the manufacturer. Please help

      There are a few reasons why the lower looper (back thread) thread breaks. Check if the thread passes through the little hook inside... ( 05:40 ). Check your thread - perhaps it's weak, dried out, and can break easily.
      Finally, check if the tension is not too tight.

    Is there a way to adjust how far the pressure foot raises? Mine only lifts by a few mm so it’s hard to get the fabric underneath

    • @ArtOfClay
      @ArtOfClay  3 года назад

      The instructions say that the machine cannot sew more than 4 mm thick fabrics. Therefore, I think this is the maximum.
