About cruising above water. Even during ww2 before sonars and radars were a thing all subs were cruising above water submerging only for combat and bad weather so it makes sense
That was because they couldn't hold much air for their engines. They had to bring their own oxidiser, which is usually dangerous and hard to store, not to mention expensive at the time.
It was also quicker, generally.
@@TlalocTemporal diesels were still run at periscope depth, i believe due to some sort of intake pipe on the periscope. couldnt believe it when i heard about that but there you go. amazing how modern subs can stay below now, i think they only have to come up for supplies and maybe swap air a bit every now and then
@@adampyro834 -- Yeah, snorkels. That's still risky though, you'll probably leave a wake and a plume of exhaust, and are likely to be seen by aircraft. It's also hard to move quickly without breaking the big hollow stick you depend on. Still very useful for getting clode to ships though.
Snorkels were created pretty much right around the time it became necessary for a u-boat to stay submerged for extended periods due to radar & aircraft cover, IIRC
Really not much benefit for WW2-era subs remaining submerged otherwise. Now, for modern subs using long-range missiles or nukes is another thing altogether plus there's still the air cover thing as well

For the periscope's video screens put them on a spin block with one of the invisible blocks immediately under (or two of them above) and have the projector on those with the screen facing inwards so you can stand in the middle and rotate and the screen will always be infront of you due to the spin block.
Going to steal that for any subs I build in my own games, thank you >=)
Also, liked so Lathland can see this
was about to suggest something very similar as ive fucked around with this quite a bit
You mean a one axis turret right? I don't think the spin block will turn with you
Thats a great idea!
Hey lathrix, if you make the cockpit of the sub bigger. You can have a piston under your control chair. You can create a button that when pressed lowers your chair into the viewing room and raises the periscope. This way you still have control of the sub and can see above the water without surfacing or losing control of the sub.
YES YES YES ,also more first person please
or he could just put his control chair and steering wheel on the periscope itself for maximum view and minimum protection.
Lath, give us a sign that you saw this comment!
@@clone4211 I feel like this would be something he would do
Lathrix's "subtle things" are so cute
“Sub-tle”
I say, for now act like a real life submersible. Cruise above water, submerge during combat while only being allowed to use the periscope to see above the water.
When you have enough materials, switch to a spaceship.
Edit: as JTF2X said, in honour of Hootsforce you should make the spaceship still look like a submarine. A gothic cathedral also fits.
How bought both
Pretty sure modern subs stay underwater basically at all times to avoid detection?

@@thefirstprimariscatosicari6870 aren't you supposed to be annoying your chapter master
I would love to see a legion sub silently obliterating everything in its path
Oh, and consider putting AI on the periscope that looks at the enemy.
Oh, that's really clever. Although, wouldn't it be better for a lower periscope controlled by the AI, then have another that Lathrix controlls for him to know where he's driving to. He could have a seperate screen for the AI one, which he could look at to find the enemy, while using his own to orient himself. Still, a really clever idea, well done :>
That's something I do even on airships, sitting in a metal box and watching my enemies die on tv.
Typically one screen for ai and a set for navigation, and a few buttons to toggle ai navigation when I need to go afk.

Of course, CHAOS! If he was predictable, it wouldn't be true chaos.
Those cameras is one of the most awesome things i have seen in this game.
And he's not even using them optimally. Due to how they work, you don't need the screens to view from them.
I'd love to see a submarine build run, approximating real world submarine combat and tactics.
And remember, a deck gun makes submarines cooler.
@Marco Menon also -10 to dive speed
RIP Surcouf. You were too ridiculous for this world
The periscope and camera room is a great idea, it gives a whole other ...view of the combats and episode in general.
2 recommendations on the periscope:
1 (another way to periscope): You can only have 1 camera and use a control terminal (located at the left of the camera in the block menu)
from the control terminal you can choose to view 1 camera ,and control its rotation with A and D (or WASD if it is on a 2 axis) if it is directly on a turret (as opposed to have placed down the turret first and the piston second)
This option has a lot better resolution then the camera room and is easier to control
2 (for the camera room): You can make a 2 block high 3x3 room and put one 3 block wide screen in each wall ,then put camera zoom level to 1.5 and it will line up almost perfectly between them
but the resolution will be quite low
a way to fix that would be to make the screens 1 block wide screens and 1 camera for each screen ,but the zoom level would have to be adjusted quite a lot for them to align ,and you would either need cameras at a 45 degree angle to make up for the higher zoom level required for these cameras to align, or just make 1 side and put it on a controlled turret
PS:
Increase the torpedo speed because they run out of time before they run out of fuel
I feel your sub needs a luxurious captain's cabin so your enemies know they've been defeated by a gentleman adventurer and not some seagoing vagabond.
I missread that as "captain's cannon", and immediately thought of a gold painted APS.
18:35 How did I know he was going to say "Literally"? It just seems like Lath to me.
And also, please keep it as a submarine.
I really want to see this be a first person only run. All of the cheese, but you have to do your cheese from a first person perspective for everything. (maybe even building in first person? maybe not, but that might be cool.)
We've seen a lot of subs over the years, but i don't think you've every really had a dedicated spacecraft that was used alot, so I personally would like to see something new.
Agreed.
Same
Meh, I'm not a fan of spacecrafts so I'd prefer the sub even though we've had several in the past. But I'll still watch and enjoy the series if he does do a spacecraft
I really want you to build a sub with giant missiles.
Me: 4k display, wired internet connection

Space Craft!!! Or really any thing that flies.
My last Adventure Mode, I had a "Sailing Bridge" up high that I'd normally control the ship from so I could see easily. It was still armored but only a single layer of metal (my "window" was having the chair put my head into the metal ceiling beam). I then had a "Battle Bridge" near the ship's center of mass, which was a heavy armor box with video screens along the entire inside of the box, fed by cameras on my sensor mast.
With the cameras static, I couldn't manually aim very effectively like that, but it was certainly much safer.

I absolutely love and adore the "Subtle things." They always bring a smile and a light chuckle.
OMG THE CAMERA THING IS SO COOL!!! This totally sold me on the idea of a sub, mainly because it actually feels like an adventure now... Having actual uses for the bridge is really cool, and the concept in general is amazing. Keep up the good work :)
It's the "subtle thing" that does it for me
This is a subtle comment saying I love all the sub stuff this episode, that periscope was really cool.
After seeing the perriscope and overall vibe of the submarine, I'd love to see it expanded!
I would love to see something like a space plane later in the play through.

A sub with melee capabilities would be pretty fun to watch. Call it the ______ Kraken or something.
We have been seeing a lot of meele focused crafts from lathrix, so seeing something else would be nice. And regarding the Kraken, he actually build a Sub wich had the purose to drag enemys underwater and drow them.
so a few things
i love both ideas of a massive sub or essentially an angry space station
the periscope is REALLY cool and it makes me want you to stay as a sub for at least long enough to build a viewing room.
a cool idea i just had for the cameras, that im definitely going to do on my big / walkable ships from now on, is put them on the AI turrets, so your viewing room can show you exactly what your individual turrets are aiming at.
Going back to the sub vs space. i think you should definitely build a big ol sub, and then when you have the resources build a real space station / capital ship.
also, you could in theory, build a space periscope, you just mount the assembly upside down so it goes to the surface.
I'm super excited for a giant room full of monitors with a periscope. What a neat idea.
The old FTD music will always be amazing but this new music is beautiful and so atmospheric.
i LOVE this submarine concept. and basically utilizing the cameras to see.

I think this was the most enjoyable FTD video yet, because of these novel submarine tactics
2 years on and you can still watch these videos. Have a happy and safe holiday season. Cheers for the video mate.
The first-person idea is pretty cool. You could also do it with normal ships too, put cameras on the turrets so you can watch each one's shots aiming at a target.
Honestly I'd like to see a lot more first person sub stuff
the use of cameras is neat, be cute if could run like camera drones for spotting
I am absolutely loving the way this series is going. I've always been a huge fan of submarines. I liked your last adventure series, but this? This is *chef's kiss*
watching the onyx watch ship sink from the periscope was awesome that was some documentary stuff
Honestly I'm loving the submarine so far. Especially with the restriction you put on yourself where you don't use the 3rd person view. First person only with the periscope is just plain, old fashioned, COOL.
u should try space engineers, it has the building like ftd exept first person, u can ACUALLY go to space and other planets, exept earth has not liquid oceans :( exept u need to weld every block and gather different recourses.
All I can say to this, as an SE viewer, is yes.
i 100% agree lathrix would love that game
Lol I never knew that helicopters could write
I had some fun with SE - yes, but it is still lacking content. You have to grind to build a thing to grind faster to build a bigger thing and grind even more. And what than? Kill these AI controlled pirate-drones?
Well i would not recommend SE to a FTD-buddy 😉
How about the scenario's?
“that things butt is being destroyed”

Massive sub. Could do a massive 'imperial' sub, with all these interior luxuries as well as a ton of weapons. Would be fun, just one massive sub that just could emerge and rain down doom, or slink beneath the water and shred enemies to bits before they know you are there.
You have been giving me the urge to play from the depths since I first subscribed, and then bought the game. Thanks to Steam I can say that was Purchased: Dec 15, 2014 @ 8:45pm.. Hope you're well. These playlists are still fun to binge watch.
And now For some reason, I am compelled to play a submarine.
"There are more planes in the sea, than submarines in the sky" How about you change that; with a submarine hull, in space! Also if you want really precise control for Roll/Pitch/Yaw, try reactions wheels; essentially lead on spin-blocks set to spin a direction depending on the control input, cheap, effective, and require no engine power.
To everyone else: The idea of reaction wheels in FTD wasn't my discovery, all credit goes to Sam's Stash on RUclips as far as I know.
Damn that funk during the catshark and argonaut fight is a real banger!
that periscope is SO AWESOME
those torps are just sexy too
you should make a spaceship with a periscope
Lathrix: ….So we can have more missiles.. So we can use missiles while we are using missiles so that we can hit things with missiles…
Me: OKAAAYY LATHRIX WE GET IT…. YOU LOVE MISSILES..
I’d love to see the sub turn into a terror of the deep that launches harpoons at enemies and drags them into a watery grave.
Lathrix: ok so i've made a periscope for my secret underwater submarine and also a vr headset for it
Me: *struggles to make a box float and literally any kind of torpedoes work*
I've learned more in these adventure modes than so many tutorials. Fantastic content thank you Sir
That cosmos bit was absolutely beautiful…
28:10 the missile impacts seemed to sync up perfectly to the music
I really like to watch the first person sub experience
Wow, seems like everyone’s content is getting better and more frequent now that it’s summer. Yay!
Oh and maybe you could paint the sub purple. It’s the sneaky color.
Dang the music in FtD is about 100 levels higher than it was a couple years ago, man that’s good stuff
If he paints the sub purple to be sneaky he needs to paint the weapons orange so they explode better
And the props red to go fasta
I hope we can see HUNDREDS upon HUNDREDS of missiles/torpedoes later on. A murderswarm of rockets sounds fun
I think a spaceship with a ridiculous doom cram that just drops the shell would be funny
I love you content, especially your From The Depth builds. They are really interesting to watch, mainly because of your enthusiasm and personality. You make my day when you put up a new video! Thank you for that
It's been a while since watching FTD and holy crap the game has really upped it's specs. That explosion alone is so much nicer than I remember them being.
idea: use metal mimics for glass, gets protection of metal but viewof glass
That first clip is brilliant
“Weeeeeeeeeeeeee”
This submarine is just explosive and glorious victory on a stick
love the cameras. its awesome to watch you go first person with all the cameras
super enjoy the building aspect of this game, just seems so intricate and interesting!
We have been seeing a lot of Subs in previous adventure serieses and in the campain, so to see you go with a spacecraft would be nice.
He's never actually tried to RP as being in a sub, though. The whole periscope idea is pretty cool & lets him remain in 1st person for tactical strikes
@@Altair1243WAR I'll have to agree with that , but I would still prefere a spacecraft.
Also Lathrix, one way that I did a periscope in the past was to put a spin block on the top of the Pistons with the camera on the spin block then using two keybinds to rotate and two keybinds to zoom in. You could also do one horizontal spinblock and one pitch-oriented spinblock if you wanted to look vertically, with two more keybinds of course. The advantage to doing this is that you only need one camera display and can make it quite large
I know this may seem crazy… but hear me out: A sub that flies up to space to gather resources and escape other submarines
If Lathrix wants to continue this sneakyness, he should consider adding purple hull… I hear that works to well.
I almost would like a campaign where Dedi-Blades are forbidden... because they honestly tend to make things really easy xP
Nice "later" bit. It helps grab the audience's attention. You should continue doing that.
Honestly lath I really enjoy the classic sub style. No cannons, just torpedoes and missles.
im watching a screen of a man watching explosions on a screen. i love watching your videos on this game, they are great.
Personally, my vote goes to the spaceship. Especially if you play it with the stipulation someone mentioned last episode, where you can *only* re-enter atmo to pass through a portal. I just really like the idea of a massive, ominous shadow hovering in the air to rain missiley death upon its unsuspecting foes. I don't know if FtD has laser guidance, but if it does then a scouting drone built to drop into atmo and paint targets for the missile barrage would also be a wonderful thing to see.
The other option which I think would be equally awesome, would be to build the Megalodon. A giant melee submarine designed to latch onto enemy ships and just rip them apart from beneath. I'm talking like 40k spaceships big. A gaping maw full of murderspinners that can just outright engulf smaller ships.
Or you do both, build the Megalodon in SPAAAACE and use harpoons to pick ships up and drag them to an airy grave.
Ouh! I love the periscope! Can’t wait to see the hunted bigger version of the displays!
At first I wanted a spaceship, but the more I think about it I feel like sub would just work better. There isn't really that much to do in space while as a sub there are plenty of enemies and even other subs!
I love that subtle thing
Thanks for this, I like using the camera's quite a bit, so it's nice seeing someone use them. Anyway thanks once again and I can't wait for more
Submarines seem the more cheese and fun thing to do ;)
Love your content, thank you for making our days better
This. This. A million times over, this. Everything from first person perspective, using periscopes and DRONES and (here is a trick) using a docking station to hold another camera-vehicle 100m away
so to quote martincitopants, this game has an “undergraduates degree” worth of tutorials, yes? Lovely, someone teach me
The music for the catshark fight was perfect
I'm loving the Submarine gameplay, I'd love to see it continue
I'm liking seeing you play around with a sub. Definitely stick with it.
As much as I would love to see sub being slowly upgraded to spaceship, I think going full sub this time and spaceship for a whole run would be amazing. :)
Sometimes, the "subtle" things make me funny. Grats.
