Is it really a great guitar? So far all the videos I’ve seen they all sound to be thin or bleak. This one exceptionally sounding bold and bloomy. Guess it’s the mic
Love your playing and your presentation abilities shine bright! Noting your capo, pick, strings and camera is a great help😎 I also love this guitar. Will be in the hunt to try one and maybe buy one soon.
I bought the yamaha FS800, which I liked very much and was greatly impressed. But, it lacked a little warmth, a bit of the low end was missing for me, and this video and some reviews made the difference. Ordered the the FG830, will reluctantly send the FS800 back. I still want to emphasize two things ... the FS800 is fantastic.. esp. for 200$. And this video, which seems more like what I am hearing in my living room than others, really cemented my purchase. thanks!
This was my first. I played through 3 action resets and 4 restrings (maybe 500 hrs) I was able to buy a Martin D16E. I am in heaven even with the lower end Martin. I still love Yamaha as I have 2xFGX5 on order (summer delivery) I will need to find a job for the FG830. I sure played the p*** out of mine.

Did you compare the smaller body FS830 to the FG830 as well? I’m wondering if there is any advantages/disadvantages you have noticed between body sizes. Excellent playing btw...
I’m new and I’ve been playing that exact same fg830 for like 6 months now and my finger tips still hurt. You have a ton of guitars. Is the action on the 830 considered higher than normal in your opinion? Ty.
I'm wanting to buy this guitar..but i had a doubt..does it suffer from high action? Will i have to get it adjusted when it comes? And will that affect it in any way?
I have a Yamaha FG-TA transacoustic and the strings that come with it were sounded just like yours. It had a good bassy, woody low end, perfect combine with bright mid and high end. I just changed those strings recently with new set of D’addario 80/20 Bronze Light high end/ medium Bottom end. Now, it sounded tinny, too bright and brassy low end(sounds crappy).....Do you know what brand/gauge of strings does Yamaha use?
I contacted Yamaha and they replied to me. They used to use Daddario EXP11 or Yamaha FS50BT. But they're currently using Elixir NANOWEB 80/20 Bronze Light.
I've never compared🤔 But I think takamine's electronics is helpful if you will be on stage. FG has no electronics but good organic sound. I recommend it if you won't be on stage.
Beautiful guitar with versatile sound and tone. Is the Yamaha FG800 a light weight guitar as I'm planning to buy it and find it to be the best in my budget? And, can one use 11 gauge strings instead of 12s?
Yes, the FG800 is a light weight guitar. the new scalloped bracing reduces the weight from the FG700 series and retains the Sitka Spruce solid top. I would recommend going to 10s or 9s. I play with Ernie Ball 9s on my FG820-12. it actually makes the low end more resonant. Experiment with the strings and find out for yourself. It also makes the action more comfortable and playable imho. The FG800 is an excellent guitar I would use 9s on that one. I have an FSX800C on order. That body is a bit smaller, but you don't lose that much in the low end. Surprisingly good as are all Yamahas I think.
I owned my Yamaha FG-730S for about 14 years now. After seeing your sound sample, I decided to order the FG830. I was very impressed with how crystal clear and balanced this guitar sounds, especially with the capo on the 9th fret! Thank you for providing important information as to strings and pick used during your performance. Did you have a set-up done or did the guitar play like this "out of the box"? Thank you!
What an honor ! Enjoy your guitar life😉 But please take note that I put the capo on "7th fret" in this video. I slightly lower the 6string height. Thank you!
I would add that it has been my experience that most "out of the box" guitars will require some work to lower the action. My Yamahas (FG312, FG820-12) have all been "not terrible" but still high in the nut and saddle. Plan to lower it from out of the box.
It seems with most Yamaha made instruments...none of them sound bad and that annoying painful harshness in the highs (pianos's) is now gone. That most of their musical instruments are made "well enough" for most players. Though, to my ears, still do lack that "extra something (good mids, lows and highs...together...as found on German piano's or American acoustic guitars) and offered at a lower price point than the competition. There IS a brightness in the FG830 but isn't painful to listen to. Might even be wanted for live performances when the guitar has to cut through other instruments. Or just be able to be hear in a band. Or ensemble. To each his or her own.
Eightoeight Art two different things, apx600 sound good amplified, thin small guitar that doesn't sound quite good acoustically, but confortable to play due to its small size scale , the fg830 is a monster acoustically, but no preamp installed.
The FG830 has Rosewood back and sides vs the FG800 that has Nato. The FG830 has a nice Abalone rosette and a nicer cream colored binding. The fingerboards differ as well, 800 having walnut vs the 830 having Rosewood. I guess it boils down to whether or not you want to spend about a $120 more for a bit more bass because of the Rosewood and a bit better looking. Yeah I'm deciding which one I want as well. I'll probably go with the 830, what the hell.
