    I never understand why people capsize on a reach, Why not just immediately uncleat and release the main sheet when you feel the gust taking you over?
    Am I missing something?

      Yeah they knew that they were pushing it when they had a hull totally out of the water. Hit around 12 degrees and needed to be seriously letting off. The high angles are fine on a keel boat but...

      They really need a emergency cutter to dump those sails before that point of no return. Lucky they are close to shore with a power boat to flip them over. People have died out in the Pacific and Atlantic on these crazy machines. 👍😁☠

    Looks like a £10,000 joyride? How about a quick release main or an explosive charge on the boom cleat so that the main flaps beyond a certain angle. Would be worth the small investment to keep everyone safe.

    You can have all that money ,but if you've never learnt how to dump the traveller down and release the main sheet on a Tiger/Dart 18 etc first , then that's what happens

      at least it did not break

    • @philgray1023
      @philgray1023 Год назад +2

      Think about how big a float has to be to keep 5 tonnes of hull out of the water. Do the maths on how oversize the rigging has to be to take the acceleration of a wave and 5 tonnes of lateral force. Then think about how the mast is going to be designed to take the forces. So a float that displaces 5 cubic metres of water. That would be about the size of a Toyota Landcruiser. It would put the boat in a very unstable position, just waiting for the mast to break and start punching holes in people and everything else. Whereas upside down it is solid as a rock. This is why you will see not a single mast head float on any cruising cat. Kiddies beach toys maybe.

    How did they right the boat, once it turtled?
    (I know.. . a powerboat, but what about the sails, did they have to furl them? release?). It’s alotta water in those sails to pull, once toytled!

    • @jsmit9484
      @jsmit9484 6 лет назад +2

      I guess they just released the main sheet, and furled or released the Genoa. Once it's being rightened the sails will just open up and let the water fall off. The mast is also watertight, which means the air in the mast will make it rise up like a balloon. Once the mast is at 20-30 degrees above the water line it'll just topple over. Then you just have to make sure it doesn't capsize the other way because of its momentum :')

    • @rps13sr
      @rps13sr 6 лет назад

      Jelle Smit the issue is righting it when there’s water over the sails. No one cares about the water coming off when it’s already righted.

    • @jsmit9484
      @jsmit9484 6 лет назад

      @@rps13sr yeah, but the resistance of the water on the sail will be less when they release the main sheet, because it will point straight down into the water. I think you misinterpreted me.

    • @rps13sr
      @rps13sr 6 лет назад

      Jelle Smit I guess I did. But I think the mast was broke in this situation.
