The episode, and storyline, were both well done. I remember the first time I saw it, and cringing when Nog was shot and had to lose his leg. This episode also showed how much Quark truly cared about Nog, as he killed a Jem'Hadar soldier to protect them both....

    • @AccessAccess
      @AccessAccess 10 месяцев назад +1

Did Nog really lose his leg? I thought it was replaced by the next episode. In ST universe getting your leg shot up is no big deal since they can just grow you a new one (or if preferred you can get a bionic replacement that functions in all ways like the biological one). It's not a life-changing incident or anything like that, Quark was just being his melodramatic self.

DS9 is great at a lot of things, especially by reminding us that a conflict is always going to have casualties and there will always be misery, although in the worst moments we can become the best or the worst of our species. I especially love Damar's change of role from oppressor to "liberating terrorist" and how he despises the actions of the oppressors that he himself carried out in the past and how he is to some extent a copy of Kira doing the opposite path (With this one, she has been gradually understanding for several seasons that the Cardassians and the Bajorans are not so different, only that they evolved in different ways, just at the moment when she and her people are integrating into a larger organization, despite their desire to regain freedom and be truly independent.).
I was really saddened by Damar's death, I think the character could have grown more, even if it was through books or in an episode in some other series.

@radeadcool yes but the klingons were very busy on the other planet. A jemhadar army with cardassians as well .
Thr romulan groudforces were engaged Liberating federation occupied member worlds , the federation had the defiant. With its cloak and were only getting to them now. .
The romulan military also had their own front. Federation/klingon/ romulan combined forces. Were going world by world driving the dominion out of allied territory.
Chintoka ( cardassian invasion) made it impossible to stop the alliance. And the suffered huge casualties in the offensives . .
Chintoka was very much like ww1 . It was really one long battle. With peaks of major activity.
The klingons were sending 150 thousand troops to one location. .
In nemesis it said the remans under Shinzon. Fought in the most violent battles in the dominion war . With the romulan imperial army.
      ( romulans by dsy , remand by night) 24/ 7 .
But I believe the federation had higher casualties than the klingons in total. During the war . Around 4 thousand starships . ( and ground forces)

@@shanenolan5625 true, but if 558 was such a strategic point the episode made it out to be then why put troops on other planets? Orbital strike other worlds and send the majority of ground forces to secure a primary target on 558.

@JaredlS10 arr558 was a rock the comm was the only thing of value.
They wanted to tap it . For intelligence. But chintoka itself was a populated cardassian world. And I suspect that wanted it as a stepping stone for the invasion to continue. .
That got bottlenecked in that system. But in real world wars , small numbersof troopswere tasked hold a strategic bridge or road . Like operation market garden . Or the 101st . At bastogne. ( battle of the bulge) . . Without equipment or resupply. In winter, for how long ? With massive casualties. .

    Topic Suggestion:
What if the UFP decides, now in the 2400´s, that after having to fight 5 Major Wars in the Span of a Century, that
they should permanently UP their Defense, and decide to build a true, full on NAVY? And i mean this as afull Breakdown.
What kind of equipment would the Soldiers carry on them?
Would the Groundtroops use different Weapons compared to Starfleet? If so, how do the Weapons differ, and why are they used?
    Would the M.A.C.O´s be revived?
What kind of training would the Soldiers get, and where?
Would they utilize Groundvehicles, if so, what Types? Motorcycles, Scoutbuggys, Trooptransports, Tanks?
What kind of Ships would be build for a UFP Navy? Or, more precise, how would dedicated UFP Torpedoboats, Destroyers, Cruisers, Frigates, Fighters, Carriers and Dreadnought look like?
Sorry if this is overexited, or to close to Fanfiction for you, but i could not contain myself here

A great episode. And yes it was worth it. A brief bit of fan fiction. The Nebula class Starship that The Defiant passes after it blew up that Breen warship was the USS Avenger NCC-1860-C. It survived the attack thanks to her captain’s (Paul Linden the grandson of Sam Linden who survived the Triacus ST TOS And the Children Shall Lead) unique ability to detect energy surges. Taking the helm and ordering his chief engineer to divert auxiliary power to the maneuvering thrusters he deftly dodges the the energy weapons while retreating from the battlefield and beaming up survivors along the way. Just as it looks like the Avenger’s luck is running out a squadron of Klingon birds of prey arrives and beats back his attackers.

One thing that I think is worth bearing in mind is that there's an episode of DS9 where a group of geniuses predict the future and decide that the only way to save the Alpha Quadrant is to lose the war in the hope of a future uprising - in otherwords defeat is so certain the best gamble is failing in the best way possible. We know that didn't happen so you can just say that the geniuses were wrong. I think it's worth considering why they were wrong. They didn't expect Starfleet to be so brutal nor frankly so stubborn and dumb as to hold things like the Chintoka system.
Why is holding the Chintoka system a good thing when they ultimately lost it and it brutally messed up everybody there? Well every attack against the Chintoka system was an attack that wasn't against a ship yard or a planet or somewhere more strategically important. If you outright said to Starfleet "You are going to hold this system at great cost and yes you'll get some minor intelligence info but the main benefit will be a long term diversionary tactic." then they'd tell you quite rightly to go to hell and I doubt anyone in universe would consider the cost in lives and suffering worth it but in terms of the war I think it helped.

This was also an interesting aspects of the Mirror Universe to me. If you look at all the tech original trek had but chose not to use, and assign similar tech to the Mirror Universe, it never made sense to me that the Mirror Universe Earth Empire even fell.
From what we see of the technology available to the Federation, the viral option of Unit 37 was actually rather low key.

The main reason for the Breen Confederacy joining the Dominion were the "territorial concessions," they were offered by the Vorta, this was the final straw that led to Danmar breaking off with the Dominion.

The Breen did not "defect" to the Dominion, they were never part of the Alliance. They just sided with the Dominion.
For their superweapon, we don't know how long prior it was developed or if it was available in sufficient numbers prior to the Dominion War. And why not use it? Maybe they lacked the numbers to follow up an initial victory.
As for the political side, there is a good chance that Changeling infiltrators were manipulating them much like they did other Alpha Quadrant species. They also seem to have not been a neighbour of the Federation but on the far side of the Cardassian (and possibly other states) territory so direct conflict with the Federation.

The loss at Chin'toka meant those defending AR558 died in vain after all this time with nothing to show for it. Then again, in the time leading up to the 24th century if someone had bothered to pass down the importance of EMP shielding the Breen wouldn't have been an issue.
