This cold, hard truth is sorely needed. I rode down our apartment building elevator (in a big city) this morning with a couple, their ~4-year old son, and their newly acquired border collie puppy. The puppy was adorable but I couldn't help thinking "do they really understand what they're in for?" It is a family commitment and it involves making sacrifices.

I can’t help but comment again.. I’m a 74 years young grandma and my husband the father of my two sons was the rock in our family. I was the heart..he was the rock.. he was 10 years older than me, and in a different generation, but he was strong and gentle at the same time. Our two sons knew that he would always be there for them, and he was until he died of cancer at 80 years old.. my sons are now adults and wonderful men and I’m proud to say that they’re following in their father’s footsteps in so many ways: strong, kind, gentle responsible, and loving adults.❤❤❤❤

We have 3 dogs. When we had a house and my brother was still alive, we had no issues. Id walk them, id play with them, id feed them, and my mom and brother, they'd take care of them while I went off working 40-80 hours a week. After covid, lost that job, went from making 27 an hour beyond full time to 19.50 an hour less than full time. They had to work more, rent went up. We were all homeless after they raised rent 700 dollars. From november 17th to august 19th. My brother didnt make it, but my dogs did. They kept us sane and scared off the coyotes and tweakers. 9 montha of 120 degree heat in the Mohave, we kep the AC on full blast in our car. Now we are living some friends who saved us, im working full time again, but we are down an income and my mother is still damaged from it all. We tried rehoming them for the first 5 months, but nobody wanted them, and the no kill shelters were full. Now we have our dogs living between the garage and the backyard. I can only walk them in the mornings. We got a water fountain for them. We make do, but this is not the life I wanted for any of us. We got these dogs expecting that I would be making 5000 dollars every two weeks in a place that cost 1550, 2000 at most, not 2780.

I am a huge proponent of fostering before adopting, I fostered three adult dogs before deciding to adopt a 8 week puppy. Lots of time and money later, I have a dog that stayed in a hotel last night and joined us in the hotel bar for dinner (pet friendly establishment). Many people adopt older dogs because they are concerned about potty training. These are the exact people that shouldn’t be adopting adult dogs - if they don’t want to take the time to potty train a puppy there is no way they are prepared to handle or train a dog with reactivity, aggression, or resource guarding issues. People don’t do their research.

The most important thing with a homemade fresh diet raw or cooked is making sure it's balanced and finding a trusted source for information. We do raw and gently cooked diets in our house my wife does raw and i cook for my dog. I spent a lot of time learning about dog nutrition so I could understand things because there is a lot of conflicting and down right dangerous information out there. I really enjoy this topic.
I think the best thing you can do is put the diet together yourself then decide if you want to use a supplement or how you want to go about it. My diet is completely balanced but it's a lot of different things more than a recipe can hold its a long list of foods then a set of rules and a ratio to stick to with some knowledge on what should be fed in small amounts and what can go in every meal or what is good once a week i have a checklist and notes. I also give a supplement but it's not needed with my diet.
It's worth the trouble of learning about dog diet because you'll have a better understanding of a lot of things. But no matter how you do it I think you'll find your groove how you like to do it and then you'll be able to reduce costs. I'd suggest buying a freezer to stock up on meat when it's on sale. For example we got a bunch of turkeys after Thanksgiving for 31 cents a pound.
If you put the diet together yourself you can control the cost much better. It's still not cheap necessarily but it's nowhere near the cost of the pre-made good foods. Kibble isn't even worth comparing to a fresh diet at all. If your spending 600 per month on pre-made I think you could cut that in half or almost in half. 300-400. As time goes on and you learn more and find options and sales to stock up you can reduce the cost. But you really should stick a chest freezer somewhere.
The first thing you'll probably notice after feeding fresh is the dog smells better and their ears stay cleaner and don't get all yeasty in some dogs and their poo is smaller and less often and their mood is better their skin and coat is nicer. I'm sure you'll notice something.
Edit: I also wanted to add that it's good to research your specific breed as well and build a diet for them. Thats what I did after researching dog diet as a whole I then looked into labrador specific diet and needs. But it's best to start out researching general dog diet I think.

I got a dog because I love dogs. They're fascinating to me. They're also great (silent)company (my dogs have all been quiet non barking dogs). I got a second dog because I wanted my dog to have company and I always wanted more than 1 dog. The third dog was given to me, a retired working dog, and the guy who had her said he couldn't think of a better home for her. I may not always have 3 dogs but at the moment it's all good. They sleep together all curled up, they're kind and respectful to each other, only bit that's slightly tricky is I don't walk them all together due to their high prey drive so I walk twice a day, but that's not really an issue and gets me out. If anyone still reading this, having a "pack" of dogs in your home is so interesting, watching them communicate, care for and clean each other, that's why I love dogs. Although they're my "babies", they're still dogs 🙏

I have to disagree with you about "if you can have kids, you should." There are a TON of people who should absolutely NOT have kids. They shouldn't have kids any more than they should have a dog. There are far too many people having kids for the same reason they get a dog, because they want something to love them. They need to get themselves sorted out first. You need to have kids for the right reason and be mentally, physically, emotionally, and financially prepared for the huge responsibility of children. In my work, I see way too many children screwed up by parents who should never have had kids in the first place.

@@Lifeisawheelie I don't mean that people have to be perfect or have millions of dollars or anything, but if you don't know where your next meal is coming from, you're constantly behind on bills, you are always screaming at your dog, and you have a mental breakdown once a week, maybe reconsider having kids.
I tell my clients who are worried about screwing up their kids "you ARE going to mess up your kids." It's just a given. We aren't perfect, we are going to make mistakes, and that shouldn't stop you from having kids. But having kids should be taken a bit more seriously than I think a lot of people consider it.

    • @Lifeisawheelie
      @Lifeisawheelie 4 месяца назад +3

@@LAWise520 good point. I think Gaza is a prime example of this. Having 5 kids per woman while in gaza, and then complain that you can't feed the kids when +50% of the population is under 18, is kind of an own goal. I'm not justifying israels role in this, i just think the demographics prove an important point. Same point that you'te making. But i would agree with joel 100% if he had said prioritize kids over dogs. Have kids, don't have dogs and go into wage slavery. Have kids instead. I'd rather have lived in a poor family than in the economically viable family i was born into, if poverty meant less obsession with having and more focus on giving and caring. Personally i'd like to be rich and have kids, but i'm not gonna work my ass off while sending the kids to be taught blowjoblessons and pledging allegiance to a flag 40 hours a week. I would however consider having kids while poor. Some of the best people in the world came from families that were struggling to make ends meet. Some of the worst people among us were raised in wealthy families. But i really don't think the money are important. Struggles make masters.

Last week's podcast was my favorite one ever, until this one. You opened it up with a truth bomb that I have concluded, myself. At least 90% of people that own dogs, should not own dogs, because they're usually following their heart and not logically thinking through all that's required; how one can reasonably meet the needs of that dog, the responsibility that comes with that dog and how much a dog will change their lives if they responsibly care for that dog and what actual, practical benefit comes with a dog.

Their Select brand for dogs features over 90% meat and the rest organic veggies. I just throw a pack overnight from freezer to fridge and we're good to go the next day. Hormone, antibiotic and steroid free. A four-pack of beef is less than $16, but each meat (turkey, duck, rabbit, chicken) varies in price. This may be cheaper for you in the long run. It looks way better than supermarket meats, hands down.

I was excited to spend a good portion of each day on the dogs. Well, let me tell you, I am SHOCKED at how much time I have invested. I feel like I am raising two human babies. I cannot fathom how families with young children and two working parents can ever have time for even one dog, let alone multiple.
The two of you are correct, our positives outweigh all the work. They have greatly relived my depression, I am out three times a day for walks in all weather, and they make me extremely happy.

For the cold weather topic you can find different scales on Google of temperature versus dogs and how long to have them outside for. For my dog with temperatures under 20 degrees F I've read that you want to stay outside no longer than 1 minute per degree of temperature. But it all depends upon breed and size and condition etc... their paws can get hurt in extreme cold.

Dog insurance wise, I've been stung twice with two consecutive dogs, the companies refused to pay out. 1st arguably my fault, young & dumb, cancer wasn't covered on the plan. 2nd time felt like daylight robbery. This time around we've decided to not do insurance, put that same amount into monthly savings account. Sure it's a gamble, but then, insurance as a whole seems to be a huge con artist gamble.

Rescues are so much more work than getting a clean slate puppy in my experience. Almost all the dogs I see in the shelter I volunteer at have big problems or learned behaviors that make them not fit for 90% of the people who come through looking to adopt. These dogs are usually over 40lb and high energy with a build up of reactivity and/or abuse issues.
About half the dogs get returned within a year of being adopted, and come back with even worse mental health because the adopter got fed up.
The reality is that these dogs need 8 foot fences they can't chew, climb or dig out of, no other animals, no kids, chain leashes they can't bite, 1 hour of strenuous exercise, and 1 hour of mental stimulation. And some of these dogs don't even know how to play or engage.
Yeah, not many people have a clue.
And the dogs bark, mouthe, and jump when you visit them so even more deterrent for anyone interested.
As a volunteer, we're not allowed to correct them anything more than verbal or block them.

    • @rptrick79
      @rptrick79 4 месяца назад

Thank you for what you do as a volunteer. The last sentence really sucks to see especially because it's a part of the problem and what keeps them from getting adopted I'm sure. It's almost like they need to have a puppy or dog prep/training class before a person of family can adopt. I'm sure there's not much money for that in their budgets but if they'd allow willing volunteers to work with the dogs some...

I agree!!! If you get a dog, you need to have a reason for getting a dog. Me personally I Have a pomchi and a Rott. Initially I got my Pomchi as an Alert dog. Pomeranians are natural alert dogs and chihuahua is a companion dog. That’s why a Pomchi was the best fit for me. If someone comes into my home, or is walking up on me my Pomchi will Alert me. My Pomchi has a purpose and I train him as so. I got my Rott when I moved alone to Protect my home, she has a purpose. I train her as so, I have a reason to have my dogs. Overall for protection, since my dogs have a purpose I do extensive training with them.
Most people just get a dog because they ‘are cute’. That is when you get a dog and things go left. Your dog does not have a purpose there for you have no direction and neither does your dog. Then you bring him to Beckman to ‘fix it’.

Such a good podcast!! So many good topics. I would recommend still trying to keep your cats inside.
I have both a cat and dog and many other category critters.
However unless you live on a farm with a bigger risk for say rats and mice getting into feed. Or you have a mouse problem in general. I still wouldn’t recommend having a cat outdoors.
Not only because they’re extremely destructive to their surrounding environments, catching and eating native animals.
(See what’s happening in Australia and several other countries including the US)
But also the risks of them eating poison from an animal they’ve caught, getting killed by dogs, other cats, or wild predators. (Hawks, coyotes, even possums)
My family have the only indoor cat out of our relatives. And has lived the longest being elderly now. Our relatives went through a lot of cats from predators, poisons, or accidents. All because “they like the freedom and they need that.” They really don’t. I’m sure everyone’s dogs would love running wild as they please, but hopefully most of us don’t because it’s safer for them and everyone else.
And we also don’t live far out, more predators are just coming in because they know there’s easier prey.
If we don’t want dogs running around wild, I think it should also be taken into consideration for cats.
This is also not an attack! Y’all do whatcha want with your cats. Just throwing my two cents out there.
Loved the podcast and you guys play off eachother so well! 🙌 excited to see more!

I have a cat! I got him when he was 8, and I've been feeding him raw for about 10 years (he's 22, I started with canned food). You can switch them at any time, in theory, provided they like it, lol.
Joel, my boyfriend feeds Titan raw food. Dunno if its available in your area, but you can order like 80lbs at a time, and it comes out to like $2/lb. There might be an ordering co-op in your area. If you're feeding Prince cooked food, you could "meal prep" for him and do cooked food at home. My aunt used to do that for her Bernese. She'd cook rice & chicken in a pressure cooker and add frozen veggies & and a powdered multivitamin. It's work, and time, but it's possible to do it once a month with an instant pot & then you can freeze daily or weekly portions. It's cheaper that way. But yeah. Big dogs are expensive! I prefer my medium sized dog, lol. (Incidentally, she's a very sweet pittie that I got as a walking companion who would intimidate people. I used to live near an area that had homeless encampments, and I could only walk at night. I love being in nature with a dog, tbh.)

For me, getting a dog does actually have benefits. However, my dogs are working dogs, and I'll only see those benefits after about 18 months and more hours of training my ONE dog than my full time job. I go into this knowing I don't get sick days or days off. I'll only actually reap the benefits so long as they're healthy and happy enough to work. When they have to retire, I'll happily eat the cost of their care while I also spend the time and money to train the next. I do this all so that I can live and work independently and so no other human has to worry about me. I didn't choose to have to train my dogs like this, I need to do this so I can continue to pay taxes and go to work and get groceries like the average person. I'd love to have the luxury of allowing my dog to be a normal pet dog their whole life.
I see all these people getting mad at their working breed pet dogs for doing what it was designed to do. Like bro your border collie is being a jerk and bossing your kids around because it's meant to boss cattle around. Don't want a dog bossing your kids around, don't get a herding breed unless you give it training, exercise and a job to do. By not doing those things you're setting yourself up for disaster and you have a fluffy little jerk for a prisoner in your yard.
If you can't do the bare minimum for a dog, don't get one.

During the trip, we took a hike and at one point, the grass was head/shoulder height - we couldn’t see a thing around us. Next minute 5 locals crossed our path, with a rifle & a dead gazelle tied to a tree branch that they were carrying between them. Then the sickening realisation dawned that there were people with rifles around us hunting - for animals who have the same colour as my hair.
My parents later told me that they were beside themselves with worry the whole 3 days (they’ve also been to Africa). I knew they weren’t thrilled but had no idea they were distraught - I promised to never do that to them again.

In Colorado we’ve walked our dogs at -20 degrees. They do just fine as long as you keep moving. If you stop walking, that’s when the dogs will begin to lift their feet in discomfort.

My Malinois is a great protector against people yet is ruled my by 6lbs tyrant (chihuahua).
I also spend an excessive amount of time with my dogs; I've got three. They get at least an hour of my day to them. But I did buy them for sporting, protecting (me and my livestock) and of course their devotion.
Another great podcast 👏 side note- im part of the 3%; I'm 22 and I listen all the time !

for my cats creating a catio using an enclosed patio that came with a house i used to live in was the best thing ive ever done for the cat I had at the time. I put cat furniture like scratchers scented with cat nip, a free flow fountian, and some cat grass to munch on along with a litter box and she was in heaven. i also rigged some flirt toys for her to bat and pounce on. when I moved to a house without a fence let alone a patio I made her a cat garden by adding cat grass, catnip, and other cat friendly plants and got her a long tie out cable so she could ¨roam¨ safely. she also got another fountain and i got a bird feeder for cat t.v. btw i never left her outside alone on the tie out or at all.

Sounds like a paradise. A friend of mine had a calm cat and put it on a tie-out, but only when present a few yards away, but could socialize and lounge. Some people take them on leash, it's time intensive training. Cesar Milan had one in a stroller out for a walk with the dogs he was socializing it to.

@@renebarish2098 i have to say some of the issues ive seen people have with cats on my cat from hell as well as personal accounts from friends truely amaze me. cats are not as easy as just leaving food out and getting a litter box and calling it a day but they are not that difficult either. growing up with them i learned early on that cats require a lot of stimulation both mentally and physically and that the litter box needs to be scooped everyday and that you need more than one. we also didnt declaw them and instead used a catnip scratcher. its amazing how you can end up with a great pet if you satisfy its needs on a regular basis.

Real food ain’t cheap lol I spend around $600 a month on a raw balanced species appropriate diet for one large dog. But that’s not from a company that’s my wife shopping at the grocery mostly.

I’m here to comment that I have a dog because I have PTSD and major depressive disorder and have had it for years. While I’m on Zoloft, it somewhat helps, but I’m still super depressed regardless of how good my life is. Not to say my life is great, I’ve had plenty of setbacks, but it’s also not the worst and not where I want to be. My dog at least gives me the motivation to get up in the morning. We go out for walks. I enjoy training and playtime, even if I don’t always have the energy to do it. Although I wish she was less demanding, her temperament is calm and she’s a great friend. I don’t want my life without a dog. Honestly I don’t think I’d still be here if I didn’t have one.
Financially, dogs are much more cheaper than kids and in this economy I don’t think anyone is really equipped to have kids. Gen z has the lowest birth rate on record so far so people have to weigh their options.
Totally agree that not every person should get a dog. Dropping a dog off at a shelter is okey of the most heartbreaking things I can think of, yet….I don’t think I can truly completely fault the person doing it.

The knee thing is not moving back, lifting your knee, and keeping it solid and unmovable. He launches and hits a wall. YOU are not hurting him. HE did it to himself. It usually takes just a couple of times for them to get it. 🌟

    Dog stuff, including Doberman talk:
I got my youngest dog because I’m disabled and am owner training him to be an assistance dog (service dog in the US and some other countries).
I have PTSD from growing up with domestic violence and both of my dogs really help with it, I can also say that my past dogs literally saved my life on a daily basis.
On the subject of Dobermans: if you want a more mentally stable and proportional female then you should get one from a German bloodline. I had both a male and female, red Dobermans from German/European bloodlines and they were the best examples I’ve seen of the breed.
I got them both as adults, from different people and they were able to bond really well with me and each other. They naturally ended up being a guarding team.
I wish I had the chance to breed them but life had different ideas and I placed them with good families who I saw on a regular basis, that way I would know if they were being neglected or anything.

Dog food talk: my big dog is allergic to poultry so I am currently feeding Taste of the Wild - Pacific Stream, and the majority of the ingredients are some kind of fish.
Both dogs are doing great on this diet, I do add fresh foods like yoghurt, eggs, hemp seeds, plus fruit and veg to each meal along with an omega oil supplement.
I rotate the different fresh foods throughout the week so they get variety, which can help with adding different nutrients as well as flavour.
Another dry food I would recommend in Australia is Meals for Mutts.
It’s similar to Taste of the Wild but made specifically for dogs with allergies, I get the Kangaroo and Lamb because almost every other flavour has some kind of chicken in it, this is the same with almost every brand I considered, the others I like (ie Ziwi Peak) are out of my budget 🙄

I don't know if you guys are seeing my comments, but my brother does My Ollie it's like 360 a month for each dog, Darwins pet, Farmers Dog, search online. Petco crap is going to be WAAAAAYYYYY more expensive. Also I totally would change a 10 year old cats diet, sometimes cats live 20 years, they will have a way better quality of life as they get older. It's like saying someone shouldn't start eating healthy at 50 years old because half their life is over 😂😂

Listen, the whole "dogs should benefit your life thing", I feel that. I've had GREAT dogs, dogs I would die for, but in recent years had some bad luck with a couple that just did not work for us. The thought of living with something you resent for the next decade is a horrible feeling and does no one any favors, including the dog. One went with a friend (she wanted him from the beginning anyway) and he is living his best life and they love him. Perfect. The other we decided to return to the rescue group after agonizing over it for a long time and trying to make it work, and it got UGLY. The most unprofessional rescue I've ever had the displeasure of working with. The dog was not honestly represented, and then not honestly represented again when they relisted her. So I'm going to take this moment to put Atlanta Lab Rescue on blast. Apparently professional trainers in the region are well aware to steer clear of them as well, I recently found out.
