"The most loveable brat I will ever meet in my life."
I've never heard a more accurate description of Toph.
Marta I know right 😆👌.
I just scrolled over this when I watched this part of the video
She's a Brat and she's a hero!!!!!!!!!
Fact!!!!
Toph??? Oh, you mean Melon Lord.
Iroh: "Euch! This tea is nothing more than hot leaf juice!"
Zuko: "Uncle, that's what ALL tea is."
Iroh: "How could a member of my own family say something so horrible!"
Ibby Nevermind that his niece nearly killed him and his brother took the throne from him, DID YOU HEAR WHAT ZUKO SAID ABOUT TEA???
@@AlexJReil This interaction works on so many levels. I love it!
@@AlexJReil i mean his niece is justified since iroh gave her a DOLL !!!!! when she was a prodigal child. he literally didnt even try to get to know her
as a fellow lover of tea, I feel both sides of this conflict.
King Kylie yeah, I admit that Iroh didn’t put as much effort into trying to help Azula as much as he could have. Iroh kind of gave up on Azula and I think the fact that everyone has given up on Azula is what really harms her Psychology at the end of the show. Her mom, her dad, her uncle. That’s why I think *spoilers for the comics* Zuko not giving up on her is what’s going to help her become a better person in the end.
'Iroh is my new favourite human in all of existence' - Merphy
Everyone: YES YES YES YES YES
RIP to the voice actor
The Tales of Ba Sing Se literally makes me cry every single time. RIP Mako.
This.
I loved Avatar.
A great story and I really enjoyed the character arcs.
Happy for you that you are experiencing it for yourself now.
Btw, any relation to Jack Napier? Lol
Too bad he doesnt exist irl. I wish any of my family had a fraction of what he is
I felt like the cabbage salesman every time Sokka was called Zuko.
Agreed... Actually bothered me.
Same and when she couldn’t remember Ty Lee
@ULGROTHA you nailed it

It was worse than watching the Avatar Movie and have them butchering the names 🤣

I think Katara really stepped it up in the Desert. While Aang was angry, Toph was helpless, and Sokka was basically drugged, she pulled herself together and lead the team as best as she could all while trying to keep their morale and her own up
I now wanna try some of that cactus juice cause “it’s the quenchiest”
And this kids is what drugs do to you.
That's actually a really good point. Katara is often really overlooked, but that episode - now that you mention it - I realize really exemplifies what she contributes to the team.

Ibi C I mean it’s quenchey
Sorry for the repeat ad. I didn't have time to create a new one. Also sorry for mixing up Zuko and Saka's names a couple times. But I hope y'all enjoy the video and I'll see you soon for season 3 (I'm four episodes in now)
You said Zuko a few times when you meant Sokka. But it's still a great video. I like hearing your reviews especially because this is my favorite season and I absolutely love Toph
There’s an episode on season 3, it’s like THE episode, you’ll know what I mean when you watch it. I really really want your thoughts on Katara after that.
I recommend you read the comics after watching the series, they're really good ❤️
I'd love it if you reviewed Rise of Kyoshi. It shows you more of the underbelly of the Avatar Universe.
@Persephone Diggen - Other Things oh sorry I should've specified, I meant Merphy. In the video she says Zuko but she's talking about Sokka and his relationship
The only other time Iroh got that angry is when Admiral Zhao captured the moon. “Whatever you do to that spirit, I’ll unleash on you tenfold”
Thats when I knew Iroh was a beast
@@davidokae-yeboah292 I know, right? Remember in book 3 when we find out that Iro was the last person to face the dragons? Even though he tells Zuko that he doesn't know if he could beat the Firelord you seriously have to wonder if that is true and that he was just allowing Zuko and company the chance to do it.

Zuko was a momma’s boy and Azula was a daddy’s girl. What makes the world of difference is the parent each one idolized.
Zuko was a mommas boy because his father resented him for not being as powerful as azula and his mom gave him a lot of love because she fet sorry for him. And azula was a daddy’s girl because the mom gave all her attention to zuko and ozai loved her because of how powerful she was.

I love the shot in “The Serpents Pass” when Suki tries to kiss Sokka, with the moon right in between them.
Never thought about the symbolism behind that, now that I realise it, IT IS VERY WELL DONE
I noticed on my latest rewatch and totally geeked out to my girlfriend. She didn't care...
Never noticed that. That's amazing
a reddit known secret.
so many posts.
so little watch time.
so amazing nonetheless.
Yes I always loved that! One of my all time favorite shots in the show!
Someone pointed out to me that in that iroh episode, Iroh experices little slices of fatherhood again. He calms a crying todler by singing a song he probably sang to his own son. He tries to teach the kids responsility for their actions. And then he has a heart to heart conversation with young man who's lost his way.
Why did you say that?! :,,(
Damn...
Crying all over again. I did not realise that!
That's kind of the point. Iroh says "Happy Birthday, my son. *If only I could have helped you.* He can no longer be a father to his son because he passed away. Iroh helped all these others throughout the day but he wishes his son was there for him to mentor just like he did the others.
I ugly cried a few times watching this show, and never as much as during the Tales of Ba Sing Se and Appa's Lost Days.
I thought I was the only one who cried with Appa's Lost Days, one of the best, yet extremely underrated episode of the series
And yeah, Iroh's tale in Ba Sing Se, is the epitome of ugly crying
Uncle Iroh!!! ❤️😭😭😭
Leaves from the vine falling so slow
I'm a 19 year old male and i sobbed my soul out for 15 minuted in the bathroom after iroh's tale
I remember watching this show when it was first aired. I had just lost my grandfather who had been like a father to me and I loved Iroh because he reminded me of my grandfather a lot. When I first saw the Tales of Ba Sing We I cried so hard when Iroh was honoring his son Lu Ten. I avoided the episode for years because I didn't want to deal with those emotions again. I can watch it now but it always gets me. It's why I live this show. I'm generally pretty emotionless but this show can pull every emotion out of me. I'm ready for her to watch season 3 because my favourite scene is a certain fight with a haunting piano sound track. I was in awe of that fight, lived how beautiful it was visually but wanted to throw up at the horror of it.
I love this review... but every time she calls Sokka “Zuko” apart of me dies. 🥺
Yeah, it was a little annoying
yea I caught it instantly when she said Zuko's relationship w the princess at the end of season 1
That's rough buddy - Sokka season 3
It's alright she's new to Avatar world
IK I was so annoyed like ‘what are you doing woman??’
Moment of silence for iroh's original voice actor Mako.
Indeed. The episode Merphy was talking about which ends with Iroh on the hill celebrating his son's birthday was dedicated to Mako (and I can't think of a better episode to do so). The voice actor had already voiced this episode, but he'd passed before it was aired.

"Be a person Uncle Iroh would be proud of" is a simple phrase that will make Avatar fans suddenly reconsidered what they are currently doing.
YES!!!!! My new life motto, and my new favorite parenting frase.
Which ones?
Watching Merphy get excited over ATLA makes me sad that I can't watch the show for the first time ever again.
me too.
i just recommend it to my math teacher. she should be at episode 4 by now. the jealousy is amazingly strong.
Yes, but then I remember how much I loved discussing the show each week in between the episodes, obsessing over character analyses and predictions. We got to live with the characters for years, rather than binging them in a month or so, and I don't think I would change that for anything!
Same!! It's the exact same sadness as not being able to read Harry Potter for the first time all over again
To be honest I enjoyed it more on my second watch. I missed so many things, and I appreciate character moments more. First watch I tended to focus more on the story arch, and didn't appreciate the character moments especially in the first two seasons. Feels different rewatching it.
@A N do you know a reaction series where they react to each episode other than the one the Normies did? I've been looking for a good one to sink my teeth into.
Dunno if anyone mentioned this, but "Appas lost days" won a Genesis award for depiction of violence against animals
I never knew that
Today old is my age when I found this out!!!
Is that good or bad?
That's awesome

In the episode Tales of Ba Sing Se, during Iroh's Tale all we see him do is help everyone he meets, as he usually does, then he says Happy birthday my son, if only I could have helped you. That line breaks me everytime

@@NIKSEEN It's crazy man. I can't remember ever crying over a tv show, movie or book, maybe get teary eyes at the most. @@resir9807 Well said. Spoke to me on a personal level as well - when I was younger I was unable to properly grief over a personal loss which led to a lot of penned up feelings and rage at me and the world. Watching Uncle Iroh remembering his son and allowing himself to grief and ultimately heal in order to bring good to the world.. man
Neither Ty Lee or Mai can firebend. They're like Sokka and Suki, nonbenders. Shows that Azula is very aware of how powerful non-bending related fighting techniques can be.
20:55 "Uncle Iroh is my new favourite human in all of existence." Yup, that checks out
Some of you guys are really caught up on Merphy mixing up Sokka and Zuko's names. Yes, she said Zuko when she was talking about Sokka but it was obviously just a mistake? Merphy's clearly still talking about Sokka even if she said the wrong name. She's not mixing up the characters nor their storylines.
So yes, everybody noticed she mixed up the names. It's fine.
And it was only a few times. She said it right the first couple times and the last couple times while talking about his arc. Idk why people are so upset about it :/
I've seen the show four times through and I still get their names confused. I found it kinda funny. 😅
Most people were just joking really
one thing i love about the avatar the last airbender is that all the character have thier own porpose. they dont exist just so the plot can get going.
So the original voice actor for Iroh, Mako Iwamatsu? Yeah, that “Leaves From the Vine” song he did was the last thing he recorded before he passed away. Just in case anybody wasn’t crying hard enough already.
I knew he passed during the show but I didn't know that was his last recording 🥺 God dam man this hurt even more now.
What the heck?!?? I just cry thinking of the song why did you have to add more feelings to it :,)
Oh my gosh I had no idea! Thank you for telling us all.
Mako found out he was dying from cancer before recording that song. That's why it's recorded with such emotion.
The voice actor that replaced him for the last season still to this day will never sing that song. He says "it was his song"
I'm sorry, but if we're already crying-
Let’s all raise our cups of tea to the man, the myth and the legend that is Iroh. Alexa please play leaves from the vine. *holds back the tears*😢.

This line. Said with the voices of his past lives as well. So good. Gives me chills every time. You feel his distress and desperation.
I like that since this show is separated into books rather than seasons (at least by name), it still matches the theme of your channel.
Quick! any more shows whose seasons/arcs are described as such?? we could get even more reviews!
Toph has to have the most seamless entrance into a main cast I’ve ever seen literally fits right in and actually makes the main cast even better.
It's interesting because it definitely does feel like that. However, when she first joined the gang, she didn't fit in. She clashed with Katara, and even abandoned the group, deciding to go back and solving her indecisiveness after her talk with Iroh. It wasn't seamless getting her to simply join the group either, as Toph was against the idea and clashed with Aang. For such a headstrong character, Toph's interactions make sense and are definitely true to her character. However, she did fit into the group seamlessly soon, and its a testament to the show's writing that the strong chemistry created between the characters makes it even hard to remember that Toph wasn't with them through more of, and even all, of the series.
@@tornadochaser2457 I think the fact that Katara and her had issues as soon as she joined was one of the reasons her inclusion in the group felt so believable. If you’ve ever had multiple roommates at once, you might be able to relate a bit. In my life, a lot of my strongest relationships have started from some bad one-off interactions. Idk I think it added depth to their characters, and made their making up afterwards all the more cathartic.
I KNEW you were going to bring up Iroh’s Tale but I still wasn’t emotionally ready to relive that in memory with you 😭
I'm not going to cry

Such a hard episode (or series of episodes) to watch. But that is only because it was so well done, and extremely relatable to the issues in our world. Basically, world and character building done right.
I just physically can't bring myself to watch that episode, it's just too sad
The saddest part of Iroh's short is finding out that the voice actor died
For real. Mako was excellent and I wish he was still around.
I genuinely cried when I realized they were naming a character in "Legend of Korra" Mako.
I've been a fan of this show for years and I had actually never realized this until about 2 weeks ago. At the time I was watching it initially, I didn't pay attention to the names of the voice actors, so it didn't click. And I'm only just now realizing the connection between the actor and the character in LoK. Like jesus this show breaks my heart sometimes.
Mako could also never sing leaves from the vine outside the show, which spoke volumes of his own struggle.
Also leaves from the vines is one of the only songs that blindsided me with its meaning change, by just changing the tone and setting.
Usualy when a song has two meanings the words hint heavily at it, which takes the suprize and stab of the knife away, that you get when a song relies more on tone. Truly a song that still makes me tear up.
Watch out season 3 is slow and freaky and intense and soo sad in a different way than you have ever experienced before. Good luck
@@KellyOlsakovsky i wish bolin and mako switched names because mako's character is just so bad
I wish you talked about Katara more, or at least about how strong she was in the desert. Without her there the others would have collapsed. Aang was in pain, Toph couldnt see, Sokka was drunk on cactus juice, and Katara guided them through it
A lot of people overlook Katara because she gets annoyed by the holy queen Toph a lot this season.
Katara has so many great moments this season but none of them were mentioned :(
Like how she was gonna heal Zuko’s scar, how she saved Aang’s life, led everyone in the desert and showed true leadership skills, how she saw her mom in the swamp, and she is ALWAYS there for Aang whenever he needs someone.
I don’t get how that’s irritating but Toph (who I still love) can act like a total jerk and everyone still loves her.
@@Gamelover254 i totally agree. Katara is my favourite character and im so sad that everyone seems to not like her.
@@dominikagarsztka6232 She is kind of a pain.
@@Gamelover254 Katara is disliked because her direct foil is Toph (and later Azula).
I rewatched the show for the first time since I was like 12. And YES. I realized this and especially after how Aang told her she wasn't doing anything and gave up. Katara saved all of them by taking lead and it's never acknowledged. Aang doesn't apologize, no one thanks her. Nothing. Heck, my mom who was watching this for the first time pointed out, "Hey. Isn't the reason Aang's back because she brought him out of the ice? And Aang gave up and left them in the desert. She saved them."
04:20 honestly now that I look back at this I do understand Katara's point of view. Katara grew up in the southern water tribe, a tribe that became smaller and smaller the longer the war went on. I can imagine when growing up in such a cold climate you would expect everyone to help with almost everything. So I get why she would be annoyed when someone joins her 'new little group/family/tribe' that only looks out for themself. Just as Toph is used to fending for herself and only herself, Katara is used to everyone looking after everyone. but yeah I love them all.
Good point of view, didn't even think of that.
This show is so amazing that the characters ALWAYS have a reason behind everything they do, even if it's not an obvious one. It's SO well written.
You also have to remember the Earth Kingdom is not united, some are under fire nation control, some are corrupt, some have lost their spirit, so its understandable that some Earth inhabitants like Toph wants to fend for themselves. Even her own parents doesn't want her to learn bending, because of her condition. Whats that saying.... "turn a blind eye"
@@markcruz359 Also a good point
And also I think she gets pissed because with toph the others also start to slack off so she's basically doing everything by herself while the others mock and belittle her and it's kind of infuriating
In the Tale of Iroh, He comforts a crying child, he promotes maturity and morality by admitting mistakes to teenagers, and tells a young adult to embrace their dreams for the future. Those are all stages of parenthood, something he couldn't experience with his son, so instead he shares those values with the rest of the world.

One thing I love about this season is that it truly shows how wise Iroh is. He's not just your standard wise old man, you can see that all his wisdom is well founded, he has lived through a lot and that's how he became so wise. All of his advice comes from experience, and isn't just some fortune cookie/vague words to make people feel better
Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of those few shows that got consistently better with each season. The writers did a phenomenal job bringing their vision to life and keeping the audience gripping their seats.
No it didn't get better. It started and ended at the very top
@@Orbitalbomb Lol. Fair point. When you're right, you're right!
After Appa is lost, Aang, a devoutly peaceful vegetarian, kills for the first time. From a distance, he uses air to cut in half one of those flying creatures in the desert. Blink and you miss it. They could've made it obvious but they didn't. It's a small detail that they never highlight, but I really appreciate the subtlety.
Edit: Season 2 Episode 11, at 19:21. Aang strikes. The body falls. Halfway to the ground, it clearly separates apart.
I'm still not sure if he did actually kill that wasp buzzard or just swatted it down with air. I always hated that possibility, (SPOILERS FOR SEASON 3!!!) especially given the conflict Aang deals with in Season 3. I mean he has all this turmoil over killing Ozai, who will kill or enslave literally thousands of people, yet because his best friend is missing (not even confirmed dead, just missing), he's ready to throw all his principles and cultural teachings out the window just like that? For an animal that wasn't even threatening them anymore and was just trying to get away? I get that Appa was his oldest friend and one of the few things remaining from his old life and culture, and I could definitely see him becoming much less carefree and more ruthless in tracking down Appa, but straight-up murder? Of a relatively harmless animal? Screw that. That's not Aang.
@@36moshpit7 well, it's really unclear, but he hated the way he acted there so that is consistent with book 3 even if he did in fact killed the vulturebee
Plus, doing something once doesn't mean he's suddenly ok with killing
It dosent matter if the bee eagle thing is dead or not.
Aang's attack was deadly and was directed at a living creature.

@@36moshpit7 The body is literally cut in half and the two halves fall to the ground. It's dead.
Carlos Rodriguez pretty sure it doesn’t get cut in half, pretty sure just gets hit and falls to the ground, I’d give it a rewatch
I kind of liked when Zuko went good. It was heart breaking when he decided to go bad again in the caves because you just want the guy to catch a break. At this point he's been through so much, and we finally get to see his backstory. By this point you start to feel bad for Zuku, and you can see that he's not a bad guy when it all comes down to it. You can see what Iroh sees in him.
When he goes good after his turmoil, I felt like it was a nice break for him. I felt that he deserved some peace in his life. So it was that much more heart breaking when we see him turn on Aang in favor of Azula at the end of the season.
You will love Iroh even more when you realize the subtext of his short episode: There is a reason why the people he hekped was a boy, a teenager and a young man. This symbolzies the stages of life of his son which he lost. It comes together at the end. Took me like 3 watches to get it but I find it great. ^^
It also shows Us that Iroh helps others often as an atonement/surrogate for his own son
I think the most powerful thing to realize about Iroh's take is that on the way to mourn the death of his son, he takes the time to help the sons of those who killed him
@@legojedimasterplokoon2173 whom, at the same time, would probably be dead/not exist if they had succeeded at taking the city.
It's complex at so many layers. T^T
Wow that is some great insight!
Wowee my Mind is blown
Makes it more sad that the picture of Iroh's son says " General Iroh , See you after the battle. -Your faithful son, Lu ten". He never made it out of that battle so this was probably the last message/thought Iroh has from his son.
I believe Toph is a character that perfectly shows how the authors of this series bravely created a flaw character. And this is what I don't find in many fantasy main characters. The authors were too busy to make them so powerful, yet they forgot that a character can be more interesting if they have flaw.

I think my favorite aspect of Iroh’s Tale in Ba Sing Se, is that in this short Iroh is lamenting the fact that he didn’t get to live the father life with his son. In this episode it’s as if he is helping his son in different forms of his life. He soothes and makes a baby boy laugh, he teaches responsibility and honor to a group of young boys and finally he helps a struggling young adult find a way forward. I believe these are all things Iroh wanted to teach his son but never got the chance.
Brian Cudahy You are so right! These are also all things he has done for Zuko.
OMG you nailed it
Exactly! the story even ends with him saying something like: "if only I was there to help you"
I mean, his son was a full fledged adult when he died.
Gabriel Groenendaal I mean, we saw that Iroh used to be a lot more ruthless (breaking through Ba Sing Se’s walls and joking about burning it down), so I imagine after Lu Ten died, he wished he’d raised his son differently. Taught him the things he taught all those other boys in his short.
I know katara isn't on the radar for you, but any thoughts about her during their voyage out of the desert?? I feel like that was the moment of the show where I realised that katara was the dependable one, the one who stayed calm and rational and supportive during moments of crisis
Ikr I couldn't choose a favorite out of team avatar they are all so amazing. But uncle Iroh is number 1 and team avatar is 2

Little thrown off when you kept saying Zuko instead of Sokka about princess Yue lol
I’m so glad you keep bringing up Sokka’s arc - his story and development is too often forgotten and it’s frustrating because I adore how well he changes. Honestly I love his arc more than Zuko’s
TBH, I always felt a little underwhelmed by it. Even after his training with the master swordsman, he still felt underpowered and useless compared to everyone else.
A Healthy Dose of Fran I love sokkas arc but nothing compares to zuko’s.
Next season....
"That's rough buddy.."

Take a bite out of the silver sandwich
Let’s not literally quote crap please
Now you need to ask yourself the big questions
YESSSS
"You've beaten me at my own game."
"Don't flatter yourself you were never ever a player." -Azula
Best villian!!!!👌🤗❤
Currently doing a rewatch of this show, still in book 1.
Book 3 is amazing❤❤❤
She truly is a master fire bender.
Because it's the most epic burn.
It's so hard to create a compelling villain for a kid's show, and it amazes me how spectacularly badass, scary and deep azula actually is. I've never so consistently felt the good guys are gonna lose when she shows up.
Azula is the best villain ever!
that line of Azula's is why she's my favorite character in the show. controversial opinion? maybe but she's just SO GOOD
The reason I love Azula so much as a villain is because I feel genuine concern when she appears. With Zuko it was normal when he appeared, the encounter was expected and you know it was not a dire situation. However, when Azula appeared I was always like "Oh shit, Azula". She was one of the few characters who could best Aang in a fight, and even almost killed him at the en of season 2.
The way she shot him with lightning while he was transforming broke the mold of villains being to naive or careless. When she shot him it blew my mind, like "FINALLY someone who takes action instead of waiting like an idiot."
When you brought up Iroh's short, I actually teared up a bit
"Iroh: What are you doing?
Bandit: I'M MUGGIN' YOU!
iroh: With that stance?"
You know the series made an impact on me when I tear up even just hearing you talk about Iroh's short story 😂
same :,D
Same
I am really curious about that cut once she starts remembering Leaves From the Vine. Lol very conspicuous timing. >_>
Same.
Katara is one of the most complex and beautiful characters in the show and I think that the way she acted sometimes is justified first by the fact that she's a very caring person and she grow up in a culture that values very much the cooperation. So I can get her being upset by Toph beaviour in the chase which is justified by her story but was still pretty selfish in my opinion.
I have to add that there is a precise reason behind how Katara act and it's a really solid motivation that is explained in book three.
@ULGROTHA Yes, she had to grow up fast due to the war
After finishing the show, I would recommend doing a separate review video for the four part season finale. It deserves its own review and there will be plenty to talk about
"Tell me where Appa is!" Has to be the most iconic line in this whole damn show for me. I get chills every single time I hear it.
When you get emotional about Avatar only for remember some scenes, that's when you love a show. That moment when Aang cries when he sees that baby and sais "You've made hopeful again"...
"No... we're not in the TV"
Oh, the wisdom of children
Just realised you noted Sokka’s name as Zuko a few times 😅 like when talking about the princess and Suki
Also I love your analysis and discussion of this show so bad
Yeah sorry about that. I had Saka B Roll playing so I figured people would realize I had just made a mistake 😅
Merphy Napier oh no worries I totally figured but just thought I’d let you know just in case! It’s all good lass, doesn’t negate your epic points
@@merphynapier42 i was thinking it would have been funny if halfway through editing you put a jarring text-to-speech of sokka over you saying zuko lol
@@merphynapier42
yea it took me a good minute to realise.
I'm with you that Katara isn't my favorite, but imagine the group without her... it totaly falls apart.
And wait until season 3. There is one point where Mai goes from a really fun character to 'holy cow you are freaking amazing!' :D
The Desert was a prime example of it...She was the glue that held everyone together.
lol Katara is almost a necessary evil in the show
My favorite Mai line is the classic "You miscalculated. I love Zuko more than I fear you"
lol mai in hindi means mother. I was so confused, until I realised you were talking about Mei
Jason Roberts
Why don’t you like her
hmm ty lee - the girl who's name you can't remember - isn't just along for the ride, because it sounds like fun.. azula pressured her to join.. azula basically threatened ty lee's life when she told her how accidents can happen in the circus right after she let the safety net set on fire.. after that ty lee is just her cheerful bubbly self even if she had preferred to stay in the circus instead.. that's simply how she is.. always trying to make the best out of things and just be happy and in a good mood..
oh and mai is not a bender.. just a good fighter... all 3 "fire girls" are real good fighters
I loved the part when Ty Lee talks about feeling like the universe is pulling her in a different direction and she CAN go with Azula after all. And Mai is just the best. She's like Avatar Daria and I am here for it.
I'm pretty sure Mai is also afraid of Azula and what she'll do if she doesn't come along, she just knew of it from the start.
@@YOU_SHALL_NOW_PASS I don't think so. She admits she knows Azula thinks that Mai fears her in the boiling rock but she at least admits to fearing Azula less than Azula thinks.
Katara had a couple of great moments this season, too. After Appa's stolen and they're all stranded in the desert, Aang, Toph, Sokka, and Momo are all either too high on cactus juice or too absorbed in their own misery/confusion to be very useful. It's Katara who keeps the squad going and all but leads them to safety. It's Katara who brings Aang back from the Avatar State in the desert.
Then you've got Katara being a genuine friend to Toph in 'Tales of Ba Sing Se'. And even back in 'The Chase', when Katara was still butting heads with Toph, she was trying to get her to do chores and set up camp WITH them, trying to drive home the point that they were a team. In her own way, she was welcoming Toph to the squad. Whether she was right is up for debate, but it shows how Katara embodies part of what the Water Tribe is supposed to be all about, the way Uncle Iroh explains in 'Bitter Work': community, bringing people together, emotional strength. She's definitely the Mom of the group. It took me a while to really see it, but...yeah.
She never said she hates Katara, she just thinks she’s annoying (which I agree with), but she’s still a good character. I wish Katara fans would quit being so butthurt.
@@leacravalho7135 I'm not a particularly huge fan of Katara, there was a point in Season 3 where I used to dislike her. But give credit where it's due, is what I'm saying.
Merphy: I didn't think they'd be changing our group dynamic
Me: Just wait.
Come back to this comment after you watch season 3
I know I was thinking the same.

Ooooh yes 😁
"Listen, Avatar, you're going to let me join your group or there will be pain... guess I'm not that good at impersonstions." ;) No context because anybody who actually watches the show will get it.
Seems like I picked the perfect time to rewatch the series
Everyone else seems to be either watching or rewatching it
this is when the show slowly becomes a masterpiece ;)
So people would argue the series peaks in Book 2.
ThePreciseClimber And I would disagree. Season 3 is amazing too.
Season 3 is still amazing, but the climax of season 2 is definitely the high point of the series IMO.
I think season 3 still has the best episode in the entire series (The Beach) and it's one of the few series that actually sticks the landing. Plot and character arcs perfectly completed.
JerodimusPrime
SPOILERS MERPHY DONT READ THE REST OF THIS COMMENT UNIL YOU FINISH THE SERIES
I loved Azulas arc. She went from being an undefeatable intelligent villain into a slow decline into insanity after May (Mai?) and Ty Lee’s betrayal. Her precise and calculated bending devolves into throwing out as much fire as possible, she becomes more rash and impulsive, she becomes paranoid that everyone is out to get her even by small imperfections such as missing a cherry pit or showing up 5 minutes late. Then she really becomes unhinged after her father decides to attack the earth kingdom without her, she begins to hallucinate about her mother after feeling unloved by her all her life, culminating in the final battle. Then there’s the moment she breaks, after she battles Zuko and Katara and for the first time ever, she loses. It’s an amazing arc that cements the fact that out of all the powerful people in the world; Zuko, Katara, Toph, Sokka, Suki, The Kioshi Warriors, Iroh and even the Avatar, the only person who can beat Azula IS Azula.
(Azula is my favorite character if you couldn’t tell)
Honestly, "Appa's Lost Days" gets harder for me to sit through every time I rewatch the series. I always a sobbing mess at the end of it, but that always makes their reunion so much sweeter.
What I personally loved about Iroh finally getting as intense as he did is that, while we never saw this directly happen, we did see glimpses and got some hints that he was much more powerful and much more intense than he let on.
There was a scene in Book 1 where he stepped into a duel between Zhao and Zuko, where the duel ended and Zhao tried attacking Zuko while he was walking away. Iroh grabbed Zhao's foot and forced him to stop firebending, and called him out for "acting this way in defeat."
There was a scene with Iroh and Azula in Book 2 where he grabbed Azula's fingers as she was about to shoot lightning at Zuko, and just casually redirects it into the sky, and another where he calmly asks about his title, the Dragon of the West, and proceeds to burn everything down.
And of course the episode in Book 1 where he gets captured by Earth Kingdom troops while taking a bath, and the various ways he fights against them, be it heating one of his cuffs and closing a troop's hand on it, or using his chains to manipulate the rocks they use.
There's a few other scenes, but those few in particular are where we can see the intensity and the fire in Iroh's eyes. It's where we get just a glimpse of what made Iroh such a powerful enemy to the world when he was a General.
I mean, the dude is second only to Ozai himsef, and that's when Iroh is old and past his prime. Imagine him when he was at his peak.
Another big one is at the Spirit Oasis when he threatens Zhao.
@@nevermorethan12 I completely forgot about that. Ironic, given I asked her about her thoughts on Zhao last time.
@@JakeMobley1 Iroh would have flattened Ozai at the end of book 3. His reason for not doing it is primarily that it would not solve the issue. Also that there was the prophecy that he would conquer Ba sing se.
@@nevermorethan12 Well not really all that surprising considering he swatted Zhao away with two fingers on a previous occasion. It takes him less than a minute to completely flatten Zhao's entire elite bodyguard.
When covid-19 broke out I decided to re-watch Avatar in my free time to see if it was as good as I remember. It turned into a 3-day bing were my neighbors probably thought I was crazy. Between the laughing, the crying, shouting with Glee or dismay.... It was quite an ordeal.
I remembered Avatar being good, but I came to realize it's a shame labeling it a children's show. It is an epic for all ages.
"She has a dark side to her"
Are you suggesting that Azula has a good side?????
Well..... I think you might be surprised by her. Watch the video on Azula's psychology by Hello Future Me
That's a question explored in the comics, if I remember correctly, alongside the mother question.
I have seen and read both of the things mentioned above, and I can highly recomend them 😁👌.
She does have good. She sees Mai and Ty Lee as amazing people who are worthy of standing by her side. Two non-benders.
But, just because she has a tiny bit of goid in her, doesn't make her a good person. She never had a positive influence to draw out that good side. Her mother and Iroh dismissed her because she already was displaying extreme acts of cruelty. She never got a chance to be good. So why would she be?
@@cussundriakneal9904 I think that the fact that they are not benders is not by coincidence, she is very proud and competitive so she would never accept a better bender as her friend and she would not think the inferiors are worthy
She does know when another bender is more skillful than her and you can see that when avatar team+zuko and iroh trap her, she only attacks iroh and then runs away and the fact that she went for help let us know that the knows she can't do that alone
(Sorry for the long response)
The reunification between Appa and Aang was SOOO satisfying, I had so much emotion invested into the conflict. I felt so much relief by proxy.

The writers pay so much attention to the details. Like when in the crystal cave thing in the finale when Azula run off and Zuko needs to pick a side, they actually show his unscarred and scarred side seperately as a way of showing the battle between good and bad.
An added layer to the Tales of Ba Sing Se.
If I'm not mistaken.
Iroh's son died in the assault of Ba Sing Se. Iroh was the general who was in charge of that attack. He sent his son to death, or that he feels responsible for it atleast.
Aquila_ PE you are correct! He died on the attack and when Iroh found out he died he gave up fighting. Azula made fun of him in one episode.
I think Toph as a character is a stroke of genius by the writers because she's a person with a disability who turns her disability into unique skills specific to this universe. I also really like that while blindness is part of her character, she isn't physically dependent on the other characters like you would expect a blind character to be (in fact, she's almost the opposite).
I am watching Avatar on Netflix (Europe). I love it and I am 57 years old. My nephew often told me that he loved the series but I always thought it was just for kids. Well, it isn’t.
Give Katara another chance;-) She’s shouldering a lot of responsibility and she’s only 14. She‘s working hard to protect everyone.
Me too . i rented it from the library and found out it was the best cartoon, well acted, good stories, artistic matt paintings. and so sadd when i found out about Meko it was subtle but sweet. good cartoon good show good period

I have been thinking a lot about role models for young people lately. I believe that Katara is a great role model for young girls. She is smart and caring, ambitious and talented.
Most of all she doesn’t simply think that she is entitled to anything, she is willing to work hard to become a better water bender and a better person.

Season 2 is definitely my favourite of all 3 so I'm so happy to see you enjoyed it! I also loved Zuko's arc in this season ESPECIALLY because it sets up so much for season 3.
I loved his betrayal at the end because it was very obvious to me that he was "being good" just for the sake of Iroh. Zuko was still seeking the approval of his family without thinking of his own feelings. He was only "good" because he thought he had nothing left but when Azula offered him another chance, he took it so fast and I LOVED seeing it.
Zuko needs to figure himself out before he can decide on a side cause up to this point, he was just stuck between pleasing his father and pleasing his uncle, and he hasn't really made any decisions for himself
I cannot believe you did not mention the redemption art and death of jet. That is as emotional a scene in the entire season as any other.
Could we just take a minute to appreciate how much of an amazing villain we get out of Azula? She's a crafty, confident, powerful, genuinely intimidating female bender who pushes our protagonists to their limits in every scene she encounters them in season 2. I don't think there's a thing I could ask for a better improve her character. From the moment she comes onto the stage she shines so well and admittedly I *might* have a LITTLE bit of a crush on her 😅
Did you watch Hello Future Me's video about the psychology behind Azula? If not, I highly recommend it :)
When she was talking to that soldier and gave him the choice between the tide, who had already made up its mind about killing him, or her, who was still mulling it over, I knew she was going to be great.
