  • Oceanside was once a high crime area but in 1985 there was a significant decrease in crime and a revitalized downtown. But the possibility of offshore oil rigs off the coastline was looming and many were against it. The mayor told Susan Lichtman (Taylor) they were planning to build a new pier and he didn't want the view to be oil rigs. It did not come to pass and in November 1986, ballot measures that would ban construction of pipelines or refineries in San Diego and Oceanside passed.

@@capitans12 I knew it was recently. I used to go their almost everyday back in '75' and '76'. I had an apartment at 306 So. Pacific. I got a living allowance every month of $115.00. My rent was 85 so I had 30 left over for weed. I was a corpsman at 53 area (Horno) dispensary.

Those 2 theaters I went to almost every weekend. One of them showed Bruce Lee movies all the time. I lived on So. Pacific, (300 block) in '75' and "76". Studio apartment was 85 bucks a month. I would love to see inside it today. I hear a small studio like that is around 2K a month now days. I got 115 dollars per month for living allowance. That gave me 30 left over for groceries. I was a corpsman at Area 53 dispensary. I would never have believed Oceanside would end up like this. It was just a sleepy, little surf town back in those days. I remember Nixon played golf there a couple of times per month.

that's amazing. Life was so much more enjoyable back then. I am 54 and I lived in Ocean Beach down south San Diego 32 years ago and paid $250 a month for a small little studio house off Ebers st. That same place is now being rented for $2200. crazy.

Grew up in Oceanside in the late 2000s all the way up to the present until me and family recently left the state.
It was like heaven on Earth back then. The people, nightlife, partying, community parks, events, bbqs, and the elementary school field trips were all 2nd to none. North Terrace Elementary in the early 2010s was the greatest experience of my entire life and it will always have a special place in my heart.

Oceanside in 1983 was a dive of a town, that strip downtown was just plain garbage. but as a 18 year old new marine, it was playland. it was fun on a stick, i enjoyed just being there and watching the mayhem. get a piece of pizza and it was dinner and a show. yall did a good job cleaning her up. but i will never forget the VEGAS ON CRACK that was oceanside..

Ah 1985! That year I got a ticket in downtown Oceanside on Hill Street (now called Coast Hwy 101) for wearing headphones. The motorcycle cop who pulled me over said I was wearing them while driving. I was wearing them around my neck not using them...but WTF...got a ticket anyway. Yup, Oceanside was pretty crappy back in the 1970s and 1980s.

Oh boy, if you would have had those rigs then you would have had businesses that THEY LIKED oppenning up, hookers, drugs, bars, if you think the marines can be hard to deal with, let a few hunbdred roughnecks from the oil riggs loose after 2 weeks on the rig and a pocket full of cash. youve never seen a mess like that....
