The Police were huge back in the day. They were all over MTV and the airwaves. I was a heavy metal guy but really liked them, the drummer Stewart Copeland is a top tier drummer!

People LOVED the Police back in the day! And I especially enjoyed this one for the lyrics and for the beat. It's a good one to dance to doing that 80's dance, The Carlton Dance (as we call it now). lol But the one you still hear on the radio the most is "Every Breath You Take" - for those of us who still listen to the radio, that is. But there's also "Message in the Bottle", "Don't Stand So Close to Me", "Wrapped Around Your Finger" just to mention a few others that were always being played constantly back then. Great reaction!

The Police, and Sting especially, are one of the best bands to come out of the UK, period. Anyone from my age bracket ( I graduated high school in the mid 80s) will know tons of Police songs. The have had tons of hits. The reason you’ll see less engagement is likely because they broke up decades ago at the height of their fame pretty much, and Sting went solo. So the last couple of generations may not be as familiar with them, even though they’ve probably heard their songs somewhere. Sting is a phenomenal songwriter and his solo career has been just as successful.

Spirits In The Material World is their best example of post-punk, perhaps. Or new wave, quite futuristic vibes I think. Total masterpiece

This is one of my favorite Police songs. I love the lyrics "packed like lemmings into shiny metal boxes, contestants in a suicidal race". If you want to dig into Sting's solo career, I suggest you start with "Fortress Around You Heart".

When The Police were still making music and touring, they were one of the *top* acts in the world. Really the best. They stood on top of everybody else, and they are easily on the shortlist of "best rock'n'roll of all time." The whole Synchronicity album is amazing. My favorite song of theirs is "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" from Ghost in the Machine. Great pick!

_The Police_ were a very talented band that reached the heights of great popularity in the early 1980's but they were only together for short while (the time between the releases of their first and last albums was less than 5 years!). Most people today know the lead singer Sting as a solo act since he went on to a successful career after the groups break-up. As far as the meaning of this particular song, it is a very metaphysical one, talking about 2 separate events miles removed from each other but happening concurrently --- having a synchronous effect --- mirroring each other in some mystical way. The Father, a slow-ticking time bomb about to explode, returning home to his family in his last moments of sanity while miles away some horrific beast _(presumably the Loch-Ness Monster),_ rises onto a remote shore-line from the black depths of the famed Scottish lake, it's shadow falling over the door of a lonely cottage whose residents have no clue as to what is coming their way --- much like the unsuspecting family of the soon to lose-it-all Father whose car is pulling into the family driveway at the same time. A dark synchronicity between both events. Sting could be a very literate and fascinating writer --- another great piece of music and poetic word-play is the song *_King of Pain._*

It’s tough to stand out. There are about 100 other channels reacting to the same dozen songs. The Police were/are great. I love this song, and while it was a hit back in the day, it’s unnerving in a way that Message in a Bottle is not - the imagery, like you pointed out is dark. King of Pain has some of the same dark qualities but a bit poppier. I’d go there next or on the road less traveled, Stings solo hit Fortress Around Your Heart.

The Police were my favorite band as a kid in the early 80s when they broke up. The singer Sting decided to go solo because the Police had topped the charts in many nations and toured the globe further than any rock band. So they decided to go out on top. Sting's solo music is more jazzy and he had hits for many years and the other 2 did acclaimed film scores etc

Love the Police, this is one of my favourites. It’s the juxtaposition between the white-collar rat race and mythology, between a placid lamb and a monster. The Loch Ness monster reference is meant to signify the movement of the mind of the subject, the monster starting in the dark depths and eventually ending up on the surface, like when he is living the nuclear family life then to the point where he is going to smash through the front of his house without discrimination to end the torment: the monster on the surface. Keep listening to them, even if you don’t post it online, a unique band and the drums are always sublime

FANTASTIC choice! Always loved this phase from the Police. "If I ever lose my faith in you" is a real must from them. And, "Fields of gold" as well. The Police are absolutely a super group. And have had amazing longevity. Stu Copeland is one of the best rock drummers, period. You can't hardly get more popular than them (and Sting with his solo work).

I never fully understood this song, beyond Sting making a sort of comparison of a bloodthirsty Loch Ness Monster to a middle-age man who's had it up to here with everything, including his family. ("there's a shadow on the door".) Weird that he took "Nessie" seriously for this song - she's going to gobble up a family. Like the guy who gets kicked in the crotch all day.
