Please, please, PLEASE make a video on how to use industrial design in home without it looking like a coffee shop. I love the rustic vibe of wood, leather and metal but I feel I'll end up with a coffee shop living room lol

The trick is to not go for one style. Mix it up, have fun. Don’t buy all your stuff from one store (as he mentioned in the video). Think “industrial look with versatility”

I would say to add to what the others have said above, introduce some imperfections. A true industrial warehouse would have chipped paint and dented objects. A few imperfect things will go a long way to adding authenticity.

I'd love this as well, too, because that's what I'm going for. I think money has hampered me though from going too cliche with the look, lol. My apartment layout is as far from industrial as it gets. I have light tan walls that I cannot paint and wallpaper on matte paint will rip it, so I can't use that to create a different background color.
My issue is being careful I don't lean too much into gray and black. My couch and ottoman are a dark gray with wood trim and black legs (the Ethan couch/sectional and ottoman from Castlry) and my curtains are plain light gray (I might be changing them to something patterned. I got them at $10 a panel from an putlet store). The TV stand is a wide black one I got from Overstock that can fit a 90" TV, but I only have a 55, so I just put a few candles and my diffuser on it. And I found this pully-system/movie reel kind of lamp from Overstock as well, but it too is black (actually, it's supposed to be a very dark bronze, but if it looks black...it's black 😅).
I've not decorated the back of the couch yet, but I have settled on doing a twist of the cliche black and white city photos with instead doing some colorful futuristic cityscapes from an artist I found on Displate. I figured the metal posters would be interesting and as he uses a lot of neon colors, it would draw the eye towards them and break up the monotony. If I get the money, I'd also like to change out the boob light ceiling fan, but the woodgrain on it pairs okay with the woodgrain on the couch, so I'm not in a rush to take it down.
In short, I agree with everyone else that mixing up other decor styles helps. My (temporary) accent pillows came from Big Lots because that's what I can afford right now and my throw blanket is an orange crocheted piece I got from Target. Both look more modern than industrial, but I like that design style, too.

I've been doing a lot more shopping at antique stores lately. My home design is traditional, but with comfortable fabrics and lighter, beachy colors to make sure nothing is too precious. I can find a lot of items that feel "authentic" to our traditional style at an antique store, and because the items are reused, I'm not worried about something being broken (3 kids live here too). Win win!

I just wanted to add a comment about the veneer furniture. I used to be very adamant about avoiding veneer after going through all the typical experiences people have with cheap furniture peeling or chipping, but after having 2 pieces of wood furniture custom made by carpenters now and exploring others I have really come around to understand veneer's role in furniture. There's 2 times when veneer is actually what you want.
1.) Weight. Solid wood is sooooooo heavy. You're limited in what you can do due to the weight. For example, table leg style and placement is more limited if your tabletop is extremely heavy. Or you may need to have something like a solid metal frame all the way around to support the table instead of just legs and then the table becomes unable to flat pack and cannot move through some hallways, elevators etc.
2.) Some woods that are really beautiful to look at are not that strong and don't support weight well. So if you had something like a bookshelf you wouldn't want solid wood from a species that is going to sag in the middle after books sit on it for a couple years. Also materials like ply handle bending much better (this is why stuff like the Eames lounge is veneer).
I think where the veneer goes wrong is because consumers MOSTLY experience it with very cheap furniture so the underlying structural material is horrible like Ikea with their chippy flakey MDF and cardboard inside.

Nick, I feel I must inform you on the use of veneer. I noticed in several videos, you seem to paint wood veneer in a negative light. The reality is that veneer dies not automatically cheapen the quality of wood products. 1) Certain designs are impossible or ill-advised with solid wood and veneer is better suited 2) veneer can make products more stable as they are much less prone to wood movement, and 3) some veneers are quite expensive. Veneer does not mean low quality!

As someone who loves Scandi, and has spent a long time curating my house into that style, I love your suggestions. I think your content appeals to me because we se to have similar tastes haha.

I have a lot of things from Crate & Barrel and CB2, probably because the outlet is close. But my favorite place to go for one of a kind furniture etc. is a consignment store called Dulce in the design district of Dallas. And I agree, Etsy is wonderful. I'm at the point where I have to get rid of something if I want to buy anything, but I'm going to have to take a look at Sundays.

I've gotten lots of lovely hand made or small business items on Etsy ❤️. I also found some great vintage pieces.

I'm glad to hear Etsy on your list. I recently purchased a wall hanging (Macrame) from an artisan from Turkey on the site. Even more impressive, he shipped the 5' wide wood mounted piece to Hawaii (to be hung in my Vacation Rental). That's not something mainstream retailers do.

I think in some video of yours, you were saying places are getting more stylish with office furniture (because of covid). Ive been having trouble finding office furniture that is both supportive/useful for work, but also looks good. Im wondering if youd have a video on that, would be so helpful to us remote wfh folks ^_^!

Hey Nick really great video!!! I've been seeing Rove Concepts pop up when I'm searching for items so good to know it's Canadian based, but this Sundays place I'm definitely going to have to check out. You're inspiring me to visit Vancouver!!!

I was in Chicago last week and sat in that cooky furry chair at CB2. My daughter was so embarrassed I took an interest that she walked away and pretended not to know me. LOL. It was so much fun and very comfortable, but I agree that it's reserved for the most eclectic. The fur reminded me of an Afghan dog.

Listening from Orlando and haven’t heard of a lot of these retailers until your videos. Love your channel!
I’m an Ethan Allen and Pottery Barn girl. Enjoy Crate and Barrel for kitchen items, ( I have their dishes) and love Williams Sonoma.

CB2 has such cool funky stuff. Have to keep an eye on functionality though as some things from them aren't practical it feels.

I would love to see a video on how to or where to go to design and furnish a dorm room. Maybe you could do a series of videos of designing for kids from nursery to adolescent to teen to university? Or, suggest some designers that have done similar videos?

Nick, I love your videos and respect your style. My personal style is traditional (I love old stuff, anything older than but not including mid-century) and I'm wondering if you could do a video on where to find elegant old style decor/furniture? I'm not sure such a place exists outside of antique shops but I thought I'd ask lol.

Personally I love the thrift store for inexpensive home decor. If you have good luck and a good eye you can usually get great items for pennies on the dollar, even some great furniture pieces.

I had to take a dining table back I bought from Article. The knots had popped. It was super easy. I couple of emails and photos, then they sent me a replacement.
