Gabriela Ortiz is a Mexican composer and music educator, whose music has gained a world-renowned reputation, being programmed in multiple countries. She is often known for her particular style of composition, which combines avant-garde music with Latin American styles, such as the Mambo and the Rumba, for example. Her music is very rhythmic, and often features a lot of percussion, or percussive styles of playing. She has won multiple awards as a composer, including the National Prize for Arts and Literature, which is one of the most important awards for artists in Mexico, and has been appointed curator of the Pan-American Music Initiative along with The Los Angeles Philharmonic and conductor Gustavo Dudamel.
"I fell in love with music once I understood that sounds have souls, and it is through them that one may speak of oneself." - Gabriela Ortiz
The composition that you will hear tonight is Téenek - Invenciones de territorio (Territorial Inventions), composed in 2017. As mentioned above, the influence of Latin American music is very prominent in all of Ortiz’s works, but in particular this one, with a rhythmical and dominating percussion section. Throughout this composition, Ortiz is able to create many different atmospheres, using a large range of orchestral textures - from very small to almost cataclysmic - and a combination of tonality and atonality. Alongside an imaginative choice of instruments and a wide theme of "Latin America", the whole work is an exciting and constantly moving journey, which will definitely keep the audience engaged! The word in which this composition is derived from, 'Téenek', comes from the name of a language spoken in the Huasteca region of Mexico, and this word itself means 'local man', or 'hombre de aquí' in Spanish. Ortiz departs from a particular conception of humanity and a form of transcendence, in which we as humans may all come together as one equal force, without the need of boundaries or exclusion from others. All the way through the chaos of this work, there is still a feeling of continuity and community, with large orchestral forces working together as one unit.
