In this tutorial, we're going to take a look at how to create some basic abstract particles using Trapcode Form and OBJ files created in Cinema 4D. Although this is a very basic technique, you can actually create some pretty interesting results for backgrounds, titles, and much more.

HI ,i use the cube obj which exported from C4D test it. but i get less particular in AE .how should i do for more particular.i also did as you did in the video. the same result i get .less particular as well. help .guys
does the Camera depth of field (blur) only work with .OBJ?
because i'm trying to use it without obj and I don't see any blur:/

Hey mate, great tutorial! I cant seem to get the volume of points you have, even when i increase the segments by alot and even subdivide the whole form. The product in AE is quite scattered and lacking the depth of form you have.. any advice?
Not to worry, ive hit the refresh button under OBJ settings.... however now the resolution of the model is completely blurred?

Jacketty Jackk You have to adjust the focal length because if you're zooming in, things are changing in distance towards the camera. Thanks!

I created object in C4D imported as OBJ to AE and i end up with only 6 particles. Why?
+4 Kop Studio form uses the vertices, the contact points between each polygon. using a cube would end up with 8 particles.

Im also having a bit of trouble editing the OBJ in after effects when it comes to the shape and movement. Is there anyway of emulating a tornado effect where the particles spin around?
That may be a better job for Trapcode Particular because you can emit particles from the bottom and allow it to spread out and spin. Form is usually better at solid steady stuff.

Everytime I'm turning the depht of field from my camera on, after effet is getting VERY VERY VERY slow. Do you know why ?
I've a mac book pro 2,6 GHz Intel Core i7, RAM 16 Go 1600 MHz DDR3, Graphism Intel Iris Pro 1024 Mo.
My mac is ver powerful so I don't know why this happen to me. I'm working on After Effect CS6. Thanks for your help ;)
Do you have full resolution on? If so, try setting it to half or quarter, that will speed things up. For a lot of things, you don't need to see the full resolution while working.
Simple answer, your mac is not very powerful.

Hope Try deleting some vertices in the model within C4D and distorting the mesh.

Do you have Trapcode Form 2 installed? OBJ files can only be exported with the help of a plugin. Trapcode Form, Element 3D, and Plexus all unlock OBJ importing features.

Yes, i have Trapcode Form 2. Still not working, its says 'After Effects Error: Can't import file "name.obj": unsupported filetype or extension.
Make sure the TrapcodeOBJ plugin is installed somewhere in your Plugins folder, it's within a few folders.

I usually install all my AE version in a special folder called "Video" (Applications/Video).
The installer of yours assumes, that AE should be located only at the "Applications" folder... So because it hasn't found AE at the expected place

my after effects cc 2014 wont let me import obj files it really sucks
+Trent Davis Reinstall your plugin. I had a version for CS6 and it automatically put the TrapcodeOBJ.plugin in the CS6 plugin folder instead of the CC plugin folder. I just had to move the plugin into the CC plugin folder.

+Andrew Chevrier hey so I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it but I don't think it's my plugin because my after effects cc 2014 won't let me import obj files I can't even get to the part where I use the plugin but the plugin works fine so I have no clue what to do, it doesn't show obj files as acceptable files when I go to import

I have done like the same form in C4D but when i export it i got like 617 Mo only for the file and when i'm putting it on Trapcode Form i got an error message saying : file to big. Can you help me ?

I have a problem, my abstract form instead of being formed by particles (points) are connected lines, as if they were segments. Does anyone know why?

What short cut key are you using to zoom in and rotate around your obj like that...time-8:49...???
I'm just wondering can this apply with realistic forms to either create a futurism inspired form and does it only work for 3d models or could you manipulate a 2d video to create an effect like this??
AE don't want to import the .obj file... Maybe did i something wrong?
When I try to zoom in to get a good angle on my model, all the pixels go blurry and it looks bad. I have tried enabling continuously rasterize but it doesn't seem to have helped much.

Loved the tutorial up until 8:10... Whenever i try to import my .obj ich says that the file isnt supported by AE. ANY help on fixing this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
You'll need Trapcode Form 2 to be able to import and use OBJ files. If you have Plexus, you can use its OBJ plugin to import OBJ files as well. Or Element 3D.
VinhSon Nguyen Alright, ill have to see if i can get Form 2 then! Element 3D doesnt work for me either, it says that my graphics card doesnt support it. Thanks for the help though, it means alot :)

Thank you for the tutorial, Only problem I have is is when adjusting depth of field, majority of the time it renders to a black screen, only certain focus distance values give me a rendered image, but they are always too blurred. Any ideas on how to fix this problem? Thanks.
Crex m8 That's the drawback from high aperture and blur, you have to always adjust the focal length to get stuff in focus :(

Hey Vinhson, I need some help. Just started using Form. How can I use, let's say buildings from Video Copilot's Metro pack, and use them with Form to outline the buildings???
+DeadlyUSMC You have to use the >obj file of the city buildings OUTSIDE of Element 3d. Form wont recognize Element. So in other words just drag the .obj file onto your timeline and set form to use the .OBJ layer.

Do you mean just saving the frame of what you have? Either disable all of Form's animations and render normally, or save Frame as JPEG.

I tried downloading your nebula tut files but I cant import the obj file into AE CC 2014.... I even tried reexporting it through PS but to no avail.

FYI. its a very very bad habit "adding" a letter box in footage. you should make you project file the correct aspect ratio of the desired letter box. otherwise your final output will not match the correct aspect ratio thats being shown on screen.
