  • UCO Candlelier Heater Oil Conversion Candle Lantern Camper Car Van SUV RV. In this episode I convert the UCO Candlelier and Lantern from candle burning to oil burning. I also increase the amount of heat and light with a fourth burner. The Candlelier can be used to heat small spaces and the oil conversion dramatically decreases the cost to operate.

    Decided I would build 3 of these to heat my garage during the winter nights so I could work comfortably during the day. Bought 12 miniature shot bottles and rather than waste the contents drank them. When I woke up some time afterwards the wife had thrown them away in the trash :-( . Guess I will just have to start again :-) .

    To thread the wick through the hole easily, hop over to the sewing notions and get a needle threader. It's a heavy foil tab with a wire attached to it. Push the wire through the hole, put the wick through the wire and pull the threader out. Easy peasy.

    Very good and precise instructions. I modified my lantern but did not like that once the bottles were glued to the base it would be difficult to use candles once again. I like items that are multi-use so I removed the bottles and made a sheet metal base that fit inside the lantern base, screwed the metal to the plastic base with one screw in the center then glued the bottles to the metal base. Now I can use oil or candles depending on availability. Thank you again for the inspiration. Be safe.

    I remember when I was in the Air Force...stationed in the "Great White North"...We were ORDERED to carry candles in our private vehicles. We were told that those candles could save our life if we were caught out in a snow storm for an extended period of time. I thought: "Yeah....Riiiiight". Now I understand...they were RIGHT!

      @@timdillen just found you when searching heaters for van camping. I wanted to say thanks for sharing! Learned a lot today now I'm going to have to check out your other videos. Wanted to share my trick for threading the wick thru the cap. Take a thin wire from a twist tie (or a short piece of fishing line will work too) and run it thru the loop you made in the wick. Then poke the 2 ends of wire thru the cap and pull the wick thru. The wire becomes sort of a makeshift needle

    Great video! Tip for using the yarn - the other end is just tucked inside the center, so you don't need to keep pulling it out from under the label. It will unravel from the center too without tangling.

    Great idea looks like a winner. Thanks for the video. Maybe next you can try to use one big glass jar that would fit in the lantern and put four or more holes for the wicks and you may be able to keep the flames from burning down low as oil may not run out as soon. Also you may be able to add on to the top of the lantern with a bolt a few more round layers of metal plates with washers in between that will heat up giving you more radiant heat.

  • @7blueblaze
    @7blueblaze 4 года назад +13

    I learned this from Camper oven cooking. By putting a pizza ceramic tile (or just non coat tile) it causes a more stable heat source due to it obsorbing the heat. I recon it's akin to placing rocks around your fire pit to hold the heat.
    So back to the guy who recommended the magnets for a no tip version of your upgraded idea. Add to that some (1, 2 3 or 4 test for best results) rounded cut (or square) plain (non coated) ceramic tile (say about an inch wider than the top all the way around) to hold that heat longer. It may give a better overall btu (or at least longer radiating heat from the source), result and a platform for a warming cup of coffee.

    Excellent video! For what it is worth- if the wick material is constructed at all like a yarn sold packaged in a similar way, the thread is meant to come out from the middle - leave the label on and it will slowly collapse from the inside out 🙂

    for threading the wick through the bottle top cap, simply loop the thread through your wicks loop and push the thread through the hole and pull the wick through. A lot easier to pust the thin thread through the hols than trying to fit the thicker wick through :)

    With your looped wic, run a piece of thread through the loop and then thread it on through the hole you made with the nail. Then pull the wick up with the thread . The thread will easily pull the looped wic up and then you discard it. Easier than mucking about with the doubled wic. Try it and see.

    I cannot sleep when it is too hot and 76 degrees is way TOO hot. Heck, I've been backpacking and at higher elevations it was 31 degrees when we woke up one morning. But sleeping on the ground under the stars I was toasty warm with long underwear on, fleece socks and a beanie all night long. At lower elevations it was too hot for the socks, beanie or pants, and sometimes had to unzip the sleeping bag to get some air. I'm a 140 lb woman.
    Shoot, just a small backpacking tent will keep you 20 degrees warmer than outside, without the fire hazard. Sleeping in a metal vehicle can be colder than a tent outside, because it's like an icebox. And you can get sleeping bag liners to increase warmth, long underwear, etc.
    I'm going to save this in a playlist because the oil lamp is pretty cool. But I don't drink, so I'll have to keep my eye out.

    Now I am concerned about what you hang it from, the heat may catch the headliner. A metal shield to spread the heat? Also consider making 2 sheets of Mylar Bubble wrap and velcro dots to the inside of your windows, I too use a truckers curtain on top of that. The more air that is trapped against the glass, the more heat you will retain and you can drop back to three bottles.

    Cool idea! I'll make a couple. If I may make a suggestion, it would be easier to pull the wicks through the holes in the caps by folding a length of thin wire such as from an old extension cord through the hole from the top side, and threading the wick through the wire loop and pulling it through.

      Thank you! The top is somewhat flimsy and would not safely hold a cup of water. The little arms tend to slip out of the slots. I think it could be modified to hold a cup.

    Excellent video series. How about making everything recycled like a can within a can like some rocket stoves? You know.... The vodka heater stoves.

    Haha, that IS yarn. I have a number of the same stuff in my stash of knitting/crochet yarn boxes. You find the stuff in any craft section at the store (and Walmart). I'll have to remember to bring some with me on my trip. I may bring a truck back with me later and might put a camper top on it.

      My thought as well! For anyone looking for it, you'd find it by looking for dishcloth cotton yarn at Michael's/hobby lobby

    Well done I own the single icon burner👍 I’ll be on the look out for the sml glass bottle And give this a try. I wonder if I can get that liquid fuel in Canada.
    Keep safe and healthy

    Add fuel to the very top of the wick so it won't make soot. If the wick is saturated at all times you don't have to worry about unclean burning. :)

    Great product find, and fantastic mod. As with all innovations, it creates the mental spark for other ideas, mods, and variations. What about firefly oil in a regular kerosene lantern? Adjustable wick. Large reservoir. Hanging. They make oil lamps, but they seem to be table models. Just a spark. Now seeing if I can find my old lantern.

    • @timdillen
      @timdillen  6 лет назад +1

      There has been several people commenting about using an oil lantern. I think it would be OK for a van. I have such a tiny space I am very limited so I am always looking for small solutions. A mason jar with larger wick inside the lantern was also suggested - sounds interesting. Thanks for you comments and for watching!

    Hi I travel for work I live 80% van life and 20% at home this is the best heating idea i have seen searching the internet and RUclips definitely giving this a try. Does it burn longer than the 9 hours candles?

    Awesome work. I'm always looking for options to heat my small camper. This might be something I try. Please make a comparison video of the candle vs oil. Plus, where did you get that indoor/outdoor thermometer. I can't seem to find it, must be an older model. 🙄

    Awsome informative videos, thank you. I'm waiting on my order to arrive. Curious, have you tried olive oil? Some told me it's a cleaner burn for small spaces. Cost a little more, wondering if it's worth it. Thanks in advance.

    Peaches and Cream cotton yarn can be found in in yarn shops, fabric stores that have yarn, Wal Mart and on amazon. Have you considered using candle wicks?

  • @IamNemoN01
    @IamNemoN01 4 года назад +2

    If you dip the tip of the wick into some wax and roll it into a point you’ll be able to thread it into the hole like threading a needle.

    Could you use a one pint mason jar, poke 3 holes in the lid for three wicks and put a clay pot over it? Do you think that would generate much heat?
    I loved the video. God bless you real good 💕 🌿

    To thread the bottle cap get very thin wire ,cut it about 10" long ,bend it in two. Now put the bended end down through the hole in the cap , thread the yarn through the wire ,pull back through the top of bottle cap. You got the yarn through the cap easy. you can was the yarn too. Melt the wax dip the end in it about an inch or less. Waite a few seconds to get cool and roll it between your thumb and finger to taper the end . It shud be easy to thread the cap either way.

    Would you also be able to use denatured alcohol that is often used in alcohol burning camp stoves?
