I continue to be blessed by Kedem channel! Thank you! I love listening from experts who continue to see their work with the eyes of a very excited child. Thank you Dr. Benjamin Outhwaite.
So glad I stumbled on this particular video. I am writing a book about two Jewish people who fled the inquisition in Spain and first moved to the Pyrenees and later travelled to Alexandria, Egypt. The man was already secretly translating a text from Maimonides for the abbot of a monastery and a girl who gets a forbidden manuscript of the 'sayings of our Lord' now known as the Thomas gospel, to translate. I loved to hear of the geniza in Ben Ezra synagoge in Cairo, for I know it and now know how to continue my story! Thank you!
over the years, I've come across much about the Genizah, but I was taken aback by the abundance of new information presented here. Thank you for such a captivating and intriguing conversation.
It is interesting to see the logic about not wanting to "scrape off the words of God from parchments" discussed being used by some communities and apparently not others

I'm neither Jewish nor Muslim, but I couldn't help but think we also have early/medieval Muslim cosmopolitanism to thank for the survival of all these treasures...
Indeed! The answer, as far as I know, is yes, as a result of the immigration of Sephardi refugees into Egypt across the fourteenth through sixteenth centuries-but especially after the Spanish expulsion of the 1492 CE-Geniza fragments portray the increased influence of Iberian systems of Hebrew script.
Interesting. I hadn't heard before about how the fatimid caliph al Hakim destroyed a previous synagogue that existed where the Cairo geniza was found. He also destroyed the church of the holy sepulcher and is revered by the Druze and Ismaili Shia.
Around 42 to 45, the speaker touches on the aversion to Christianity (and Christians) that Jews have always held. Does it at times manifest as hostility? Probably.
The Christian resentment was deep and justified. Christians directly or indirectly through the authorities using specious claims persecuted Jews terribly since the 2nd Century.

So many interesting details: Maimonides, Greek palimpsests, poet Yannai, old Spanish language, learning to read from all directions. A real treasure.
Thank you! 🙏

This is fascinating. As a famous writer said, Reality is more complex than any sci-fi movie or intrigue. Congratulation for this splendid video.
Absolutely. Thank you so much for the kind words 🙏
Fascinating didn't realise how much was still too learn from this 'dead collection of books'. Thank you gentlemen

Very true
It’s simply fascinating.
I wonder if there were any texts in Geniza written in Rashi’s script or in Solitreo.

מרתק. יכולתי לראות שעות של הריאיון הזה איתו על הגניזה.
