In anticipation for Inside Out 2, Pete Docter recently stated in an interview that Pixar directors need to focus on clear mass appeal with more sequels and spin-offs instead of "autobiographical" stories, calling out movies such as Turning Red and Elemental...despite the fact that Lightyear, a Toy Story spinoff, vastly underperformed and was met with negative reception, while Elemental not only had critical acclaim, but ended up making a profit for the company. It's clear Disney and Pixar has NO IDEA what they're doing and they're no longer dancing around what they really mean when they imply that they're alienating general audiences.

There are several major problems within Disney on why their movies are flopping. One, budgets, the budgets are too high. $200,000,000 for Elemental. Really?! It cost 150 million for Spider-verse and Puss in Boots. You can't make a movies cost a quarter of $1 billion then expect it to make $1 billion just because you're a big company.
Two, marketing, the marketing for every movie from Disney has been garbage. No interviews, no hot ones, barely any trailers, no promotions with Disney RUclipsrs, and the list goes on. Marketing is vital for any movie and if it's bad, then the movie will get no money.
Three, victim blaming, they are blaming the audience for their failures and not themselves. No, it's not anyone's fault but yours that your movie bombed, Disney! if you blame the audience, then they're not going to watch anything you make because they know you're going to get mad at them and not yourself for why your movie failed.
Fourth, target audience, let's be real, Disney shouldn't be marketing to kids or any side of the political party. They NEED to target the parents. Parents are the ones who decide what their kids watch. Parents are the ones who will spend their money on their kids so they are the ones who Disney needs to market to. If parents don't want their kids watching Disney, then they are lost as a company.

    • @edwarddu6919
      @edwarddu6919 3 месяца назад +18

You say that as if parents in our modern world won't just cancel or boycott these movies as both sides of the aisle say if the movies don't support their political opinions. Creativity dies when you bend to the whims of mass appeal. I personally argue that marketing to parents won't work for the creation of truely creative movies and instead, directors should tell the stories they want.

@@edwarddu6919agreed. Kids with good taste were not fooled by what they were trying to do with 2023 Little Mermaid. @@Noahcheats445 I could just kiss you if my heart didn't belong to another. You have no idea how much I've wanted to slap the people who defend that dumpster fire of a movie. They used Halle for diversity clout and they used her as a shield. They knew that by casting a black Ariel they would be protecting themselves from any criticism. And it worked. You can't say one bad word about the movie without being called a racist. Even if you make a criticism that has nothing to do with Halle!!! Scuttlebutt was absolutely garbage for example. Awkwafina was nauseating as Scuttle. But you can't say that without someone bringing it back to Halle and saying you just don't like the movie because you can't handle a black Disney princess. Which isn't even a legitimate thing to obsess over in either direction because...ahem... *PRINCESS TIANA ALREADY EXISTS GODDAMMIT.* I'm sorry I just get very heated about that bull****.

Almost nothing Disney has made this past decade has not been a prequel, sequel or reboot. Especially in their live action department. And almost every villain they keep making is the same broken person who has good in them lately. They need to start bringing back villains who are just evil to be evil like scar & jafar or live action villains like the white witch from narnia

I think EVERY movie gets panned these days, there are YTs with original thoughts who might say they liked the movie but it didn’t live up to what they had hoped and wanted and people who say I don’t like the movie but for these specific reasons, other people are like hate get click, hate get views, hate get money and just hate on things only to feel that they will get an audience, (I really enjoy the Aladdin remake but not for the Genie, but I watched a couple just talk about how awful it is and it turned out they had never even seen it) wider general media sees this and thinks that they can give things negative reviews and people can click on their sites and articles. Like everything it started out with a small group of people watching things to give critical reviews and now a ton of YTs without creativity or intellect copy the model (not talking about this channel, I like this channel, the opinions are very insightful)

I am an aspiring animator who grew up watching cartoons. Do I have to make a film about that. It might be cool but I could make an Indiana Jones style movie about treasure hunting 3) They can still inject some personal experiences into the movies 4) They are still going to make original stuff 5) Isn't it better to judge the movies on their own merit 6) That was always the tricky thing balancing art with commerce. The point is to make money at the end of the day.

I don't know if it's been stated already.
But it's kinda funny that in 2022, DreamWorks released a sequel of a spinoff of one of their more signature and profitable brands of a character who debuted in that brand's first sequel (Puss in Boots) and became a huge success, critically and commercially with the film still being talked and mentioned around long after its release.
But a Spinoff film in that same year of one of Pixar characters from Pixar's 1st and successful brand is barely a blip on the radar. (Lightyear) with little word about them other than how medicore it was.

What Pixar and other studios like Dreamworks, Sony and Ilumination don't seem to understand is that what the people dislikes is badly written stories. Turning Red and Soul were very good, speaking of themes a lot of people can relate like our relationships with our parents or what do we want to do with our lives. I cannot speak for Luca and Elemental because I haven't watched those but it seems to appeal to a lot of people. Lightyear on the other side, it was not that bad but it was pretty mediocre. The same can be said of Incredibles 2 even tho it's a little older. But is not like sequels are necessarily bad. Monster University and Cars 3 were pretty solid( again a bit older but it works), heck, even Toy story 4 worked even if it was a bit unnecesary in the story. The issue is that they don't let stories thrive in the hands of the creative teams and instead the executive are cuting past the edges, substracting the movies of their precious hearts. An example of this is clearly Wish, which is not pixar but is disney still.
Moving into dreamworks Puss in Boots 2 is a sequel of a Spin off!! And the movie was amazing because it innovate not only with its story but also its animation. On the other side, Kung Fu Panda 4 was a mess with barely anything good on it because the writing was bad. Now on their original movies, Ruby Gillman flopped hard and The Bad Guys thrived so again it's not necessarily true that new ideas are bad
It also doesn't work that the studios doesn't even respect their artists. Both Dramworks and Pixar have announced massive layoffs to save their precious millions. Prefering to use ai or cheap outsourcing, once again robbing the movies of the creativity that people loved

Elemental has skyrocketed to being my favorite movie. It really touched my heart. When I heard about it I wouldn't stop talking about going to see it for weeks. I just knew that I at least was going to like it because something about elements is up my alley and I'm a huge sucker for a good romance, especially an "interracial" romance. I absolutely loved it because Ember directly mirrors me. I'm not an immigrant and I'm black, not Asian. But still, discrimination and mistreatment from other people, family having high expectations for you and feeling like you can't be your true self around them, having a a fiery temper because you have a difficult time understanding and expressing your true feelings? Those are the ABCs of me. Wade perfectly mirrors my fiance (who's white) and it was like seeing our relationship on the big screen. I got a little emotional during some parts of it. Anyway I say all that to say that Elemental almost felt like old Pixar again. From the beautiful story with the movie really tugging at your heart strings (typical Pixar), the STUNNING animation and the fact that they weren't afraid to do a love story considering Disney has been trying to stay AWAY from love stories lately (cough cough *Wish* cough cough), it felt like something Pixar would have come up with 10 years ago. I would have loved to have grown up watching something like Elemental. 😍

I'd pay to see something like That in theaters.

Pixar trying to do "mass appeal" when they and Disney have completely lost any idea on what people want is ironic. This company still hasn't realized that they can't sell based off their name alone anymore. Now they need good ORIGINAL stories to sell their movies. Luca, Turning Red, etc. showed that people DO want these types of stories.
If Disney is so worried about losing the "anti-woke" audience, then they've already lost them. Any movie Disney or Pixar does, they'll find a way to call it woke. Even then, it's such a minority. Yes they're vocal, but a lot more people either don't care and just want a good movie, or don't take those num nuts seriously anyways.

As for Pixar itself, if it does not get another big hit, it might as well just get merged into Disney Animation and thus ending Pixar.

I hate to tell you the truth, and not just the truth, but the HARD truth, but Skydance Animation isn’t doing so well either even with John Lasseter at the helm. Their film Luck didn’t do well critically and part of it is because of John Lasseter. The dude is no longer the influential animation creative and innovator he once was and I highly doubt bringing him back would solve Pixar’s current dilemma. Also, aren’t you forgetting that John sexually assaulted his female employees by hugging and kissing them without their consent and treating them pretty badly? Disney, for all of its dumb decisions, made the right choice in getting rid of him.

    I do understand Pixar’s dilemma.
They are a company built on nostalgia. People constantly compare their newer films to the films of old, expecting perfection and overdramatizing them if they’re not exactly how they want them to be.
There’s more pressure on everyone to live up to their “glory days” even though their newer works ARE very good, definite classics for the future. Luca is one of my favorite Pixar films to date.
But this? This is soul-crushing. The guy who strove for creativity and passion is now basically saying don’t do that. While some sequels sound good (Moana 2, Inside 2 was great), ONLY doing sequels and spin-offs is not what the general public is looking.
Mr. Pete Doctor, get on the Internet. Watch videos like this, hear what the GENERAL public has to say instead of what your focus groups say. Sure there will be people who will be trolls, but there are people who just want good, ORIGINAL movies.
