The reason why coal was given to naughty kids at Christmas was because at the time, houses were still heated with coal, and this present was used as a way to teach these children to be more considerate of others by giving them something that would only be useful for an entire group. The modern equivalent of this would be giving them an electricity bill for Christmas.

I think the reason the mini-game star is most first places is because second and third place in mini-games get coins, too. It still technically works the same, but with more coins given to second and third, it balances out like that.

It *_used_* to be that the mini-game star would go to the player that won the most _coins_ from mini-games, but battle mini-games would blow out any sort of competition with its up to _over a hundred_ coin payout to whoever was lucky enough to be the winner. Coin mini-games could mess with the scores as well. Although, it was to a lesser degree.
The new system of the star going to whoever has the most flat-out _wins_ works much better.
