I'm of the opinion that the item pool does not need to be balanced with every DLC if it means giving us more unique items. I'd rather have an item "seal" function similar to Vampire Survivors, where you can block items from appearing in a run (if you still want items to be random without using Command). There's already a mod that does this seamlessly.
New lantern seems very nice for drone builds, since it counts for allies as well as enemies. It's a bit of an indirect buff, but it's nice to have something for drones that isn't a red item.
Antlers might be my new favorite item to play with. They just feels so good. The orbs are never so far out of the way but at the same time require just a little bit of skill to get. They feel perfectly balanced and fill the need for more speed items while not being redundant. Blown away by this change honestly, they feel amazing.

Hey Race, this is just my stance before the video and trying out the update. Honestly congratulations on becoming a playtester for it. I am more happy than worried since i feel like i can trust you to give good feedback to make the items better. The only thing i am a little worried about is if they would feel more geared towards E8 players than just being good all around for everyone. Regardless i appreciate your work as well into helping gearbox fix their screw up and staying positive in the following months after the dlc dropped
Also about noxious thorn just a thought, since it sounds like a better tri-tip dagger sort of. Would it be better to either raise the rarity to green or make it poison instead? Just a thought
@@savien6401 Description make it appear that the 10% bleed is just for having the item and doesn't stack (like how Predatory Instincts and Havester's Scythe give a flat 5% crit). Tri-tips are still necessary for stacking bleed to high numbers, but Thorn's base bleed allows it to be somewhat useful by itself instead of pure reliance on other items.
I do NOT give gameplay advice that favors my specific playstyle, in fact I do my best to make sure every playstyle is as represented as possible in my feedback, so don't worry
I’ve been out of the loop since the dlc but this confirmed how my friend group felt about a lot of the new items. i really really happy with what they did with all the changes so far, props to gearbox for being so open to constructive criticism and thanks to you for all the feedback you provided! all the items are super fun now and i can go back to loop runs since the twisted elites arent complete cancer. thanks a lot bro
I never blacklisted or downpatched, just lazy I guess, and I am so excited to play again to see how it feels. Been working through eclipse runs and wondering how much more consistent it will feel without so many useless items in the pool. Great changes and it's great to hear Gearbox are reaching out to players like you to test and give feedback. On top of the end product being better it just builds trust. Hope that continues into the future after they address all the issues with this DLC
The new items are actually pretty fun to pick up now. I was worried they would be "too complicated", but they actually feel pretty natural to use. Definitely worth turning SotS on for runs now.
Lets gooo! Really thankful for the hard work all around. Ty devs for working with the community once again. And also ty to you too Race and the other involved community members, i know you guys straight up wrote books addressing all the issues with balance. Can't wait to try this out later today
I wasn't expecting much, and I'm just so glad they haven't just listened to feedback, but understood it. The new items are now fun, interactive, and NEW. New things, from a new DLC, and that's really cool! My current concerns are still to do with the price of the DLC, as it currently sits at about half the content (ignoring quality) of Survivors of the Void, and yet is the same price. I will NEVER agree with this decision, unless they significantly increase the actual amount of content included. This is top priority for me. Either lower the price, or increase the amount of stuff in the DLC. Onto the False Son boss, I fundamentally disagree with False Son as a concept. Not as the broken, boring Mithrix knockoff he is, but as a concept. The brothers' story was done, and the Void had its story explored in SotV. Bringing it back to the brothers is just so unimaginative to me. I understand liking the lore of Risk of Rain 2, but this game thrives on its diversity. Many items, enemies, stages and stories from places all over the universe and dimensions, culminating on Petrichor V. Having three of the new stages sharing an aesthetic is REALLY frustrating to me, even more so that they're more of "greenish with ruins about". Worse is how you do them IN A ROW, like 20 times for the new skins (assuming you win every run). The music of the DLC is banger after banger, but when the songs use similar instruments and all have massive guitar solos, they stop being "holy shit, that's awesome!" and become "that's pretty cool!". Still good, but still, the only track that drilled itself into my brain is the one with the Rhodes Piano that went all jazzy and stuff. THAT was new, it was unexpected, and it's really good (as is all of Chris' music). Anyways, this issue with diversity comes to False Son, whose boss fight is not diverse in the slightest. It's a big fella, with a big stick, who moves slow but dashes to you and tosses needles as he runs, slams his big stick down and makes blue pillars of fire, spawns minions on phase 2, and removes an integral part of the game for the final phase. I've written about how it's poorly executed before, but I want to point to something else. There's a massive Providence statue in Prime Meridian, and literally everyone I know who has played SotS had this experience: does the path, gets to the fight, sees the statue turn to face them and says "HOLY SHIT, I GET TO FIGHT THE BIG STATUE! THAT'S AWESOME!"; and then it's budget Mithrix. Ignoring how terrible the fight's design is, I'd like to focus on False Son. Every other part of Risk of Rain 2 has the character you get from beating the final boss be related to the story of beating said boss, but not literally them. Captain for Mithrix (the one who brought all the survivors and items to Petrichor V), Void Fiend for Voidling (the commando who escaped the Simulacrum), and now... False Son, for False Son. It's really boring, and I was incredibly disappointed when I unlocked him. His physical design is that of a kind of fan character you get from "Providence but he's all edgy..." or in the words of the reveal trailer "a bit of a sad boy" if I recall correctly. I know they won't remove False Son entirely, I assume they're heavily invested in keeping everything already in the DLC in the DLC. But it would be nice if they at least changed the BOSS to the statue, then you unlock False Son as a character. Either that, or remove the statue, and replace the survivor you gain from beating False Son with a new one. Not an old one from RoR1 or something, a new character with interesting lore. Speaking of lore, that's another fundamental failure of the DLC. There isn't any variety, it's all linked with the military aesthetic they've poured into certain parts of the DLC. A chunk of the new skins (which are my least favourite, along with the grey ones (who the fuck thought grey and camo skins were an interesting idea)) are militaristic as well, but the log entries are mainly from the perspective of people looking at the items the entry is for and having poorly written (but kind of entertaining in a 'gay fanfiction written by a 13 year old' kind of way) thoughts or interactions with other members of the military or whatever. The logbook entries from before SotS? Incredibly varied. The ones that aren't are written from one character's perspective (can't remember his name, but he's the guy who checks out the environment) and are creative and, I can't stress this enough, well written. The other through lines are loose but coherent, giving the entries room to breathe and be themselves while still connecting to the others of their type. I just genuinely don't think the base ideas for the story of the Seekers of the Storm DLC were good from the concept stage. It feels like we have the brothers' story, and a bunch of bloat filling the cracks that is uninteresting and wasteful. But again, I doubt Gearbox will change any of that, as it's integral to the identity they built for and marketed with for the DLC. I desperately hope they change up at least the colour schemes of the new stages, maybe giving seasonal looks to the first three of the Path of the Colossus (I know they kind of have that with looped variants, but I'm never looping so fml (also if they did do this, then make new variants for them because that'd be cool)), changing Prime Meridian's colour scheme from fucking GREY, and switching Helminth to an icy mountain theme, with ice crystals and stuff growing, the lava instead a freezing cold lava-like turquoise substance, the enemies having icy themes similar to the enemies on Siphoned Forest; heck, we could even make the Magma Worms on the stage bright blue to match the new ice lava or something! The DLC's stuff is unoriginal and bland, and is way to connected and themed in ways that intrude on the atmosphere the game creates. SotV had the special zones, new item type (helping with item pool bloat creatively), enemies, boss, new gamemode, new survivor and void seeds that were 'themed'; leaving the parts that NEED to be varied, varied. We still got Railgunner, a normal survivor. A BUNCH of normal items, a chunk of normal enemies to fit new levels and themes AND old levels and themes, varied music, and new stages that did NOT blend together. This was integral to the DLCs success as a Risk of Rain 2 DLC in my opinion. But, I digress. Every time I start typing a comment here I swear I end up writing a thesis, but it's honestly pretty fun and interesting to put my thoughts and opinions down like this, I quite like breaking down what makes the things I like work or things I don't like not work; and sometimes I find they're the opposite of my opinions, it's cool. I really am glad they've made such incredible changes to the items they added. I'm optimistic for their future changes, but I still don't think that Seekers of the Storm can (with the current content included IGNORING the quality) be anywhere as close to Survivors of the Void in how well it fit in with Risk of Rain 2 as a whole. SotS is just missing a lot of what makes Risk of Rain Risk of Rain for me, and that makes me sad. Thanks for reading if you did, means a bunch. Go off, Gearbox! Change everything, nothing, or even the entire game; the world's your oyster.
As someone that has been waiting for mods to be updated and is still waiting, these changes are neat. Can't wait to play again after all the updates are done with
I played a false son run with the new luminous shot, and it was insanely good - the reduced cooldown on the secondary lets you pump out massive lightning damage
Wow these are massive improvements. I held off on buying the DLC when it came out, but now I'm going to consider it. Some of these new items are AWESOME.
this is amazing, I held off on buying the DLC, now I will go buy it, partially because excited for these, and partially because I want to support this fantastic first step
This is awesome, Im ngl I was certified gearbox hater but Im very glad they didnt abandon the game or criticize the fans for wanting the game improved.
something I've noticed with Gearbox is that there's a bit of a trend of them screwing things up but also being pretty good at fixing what they screw up

And unstable transmitter on turrets will be super funny to see I'm glad to see knockback fin kept its gimmick and just improved it, i think its super funny and cool but was just lacking a way to capitalize on it, now its awesome
Even though this is probably going to be the last hurrah for the RoR2 dlcs, I really do appreciate the team going back to fix the mistakes with the dlc. The developers of this game is the thing that keeps it alive
The craziest part to me about this is when I read the read the dev thoughts I was like "I can't believe they did so good, they should have had streamers and the community help with item effects" and it turns out they did have streamers help lmao
Man, these are some fantastic changes. While they’re still accepting feedback, I’d really like to see the description for bolstering lantern rewritten to better describe what it does. Without you explaining how it worked, I may have avoided it thinking that it granted attack speed TO allies and enemies within the radius and stacked in an almost purely detrimental way. The actual effect makes WAY more sense, it just needs to be worded more clearly.
Only time will tell if they can pull it off, but so far I'm hopeful they can do it. Gives me similar vibes to the no mans sky devs. They made an absolute mess and everyone was rightfully mad. So they listen to all that feedback and just work on making it right. No drawn out apology and single patch fixing bugs, and moving on like nothing happened. No blaming fans for being entitled. Just admit it released poorly, hear exactly what criticisms people have about it, and work to fix those and then some. Actions speak infinitely louder than any essay long apology can even convey. To also hear they are reaching out directly to Content creators for constructive feedback makes me happy as well. I look forward to trying out the balance patch during Christmas break.
These changes are all awesome, I'm a BIT worried that all the new items are actually too good (i.e. there wasn't enough "junk" added), but hey maybe that's fair for what we endured lol. The best thing in the entire video to me though, was that they ACTUALLY reached out to a well-respected community member (and maybe more, idk) for feedback and testing. This is something that devs should have been doing since forever and it's truly amazing to see it finally happening. I mean really, they have all these people sinking THOUSANDS of hours into their game and whose livelihoods/careers depend on the game doing well - why would you possibly NOT reach out to them, especially when most will probably help you out for free???
Watching this video I had the realization that warped echo probably has synergy with things like barbed wire and repulsion plates! (Needs some testing to confirm this but it’s something to try) and if it does work how I think it does then that makes it one of the best whites that isn’t just a stat buff
Wow, I'm really impressed with how good these items sound. I haven't bought the dlc yet since I heard about all the bugs and issues with it, and I didn't want so many bad items diluting the pool. Might pick it up after Christmas if all these items change and the bugs get fixed!
Ok I like a lot of these. Luminous shots effect is still eh but that 20% secondary cooldown is massive so it definitely can be worth a pickup in some multi shops.
I think most of these are amazing changes (i didn't see chance doll so I'm assuming no changes) but i noticed that some of these have incredibly nice effects but only upon initial pickup or only the first few. items like bolstering lantern, breaching fin, unstable transmitter (i know the cd is lowered but no hp increase on the shield is kinda weird to me) or growth nectar (which will probably be stronger with mods that add buffs but in base game there are only so many unique buffs). that on its own is fine but feels strange where most items may not scale well but still have noticeable impact even when you have 50 and then get 100. with bolstering lantern you would never really notice because there can only be so many entities spawned at once. im not expecting a stacking like 10 + (10 per stack) but something like 10 + (2.5/stack) or even 10 +(1/stack) would be nice since these eventually stop scaling entirely late game.
I remember feeling almost lost when the DLC came out. I thought it was truly over. I’m so so so glad they’ve stepped up and listened to us to put in the work that they’ve done. I’m sorry for saying such mean things about you Gearbox team. Thank you for your hard work. Maybe I should tell them directly instead of under a Race video…
Surprisingly one of my new favorite items to play around is chronic expansion, the little beeps it gives give the item way more QOL, and it's no longer infinite scaling with FMP so it feels way more balanced--only thing is that I wish you didn't hear the engi turrets beeping in addition to yourself.... I feel like you should only be able to hear your own timer
i think this goes to show that no one actually wanted to release the dlc when they did, they probably were forced to, and now they are actually doing the work they wanted to do and making sots what they wanted, hope they keep making good changes like this! my only worry is some of these items seem a little too good and might mess up the balance of the game, but we will see
Yea I don't really like this rework for antler while the returned damage could've gotten a buff they made getting hit with random high bursts of damage less deadly
@@kaylaoneill4863 See, here's my take on it. If you got enough of them, not only is it a guaranteed reflect, but it also increased the damage you're reflecting. Which also increased with the various damage buffs you have, last I checked. I've had long loop runs with false son where I decided to pick up 100 of them, and I was doing ungodly damage to anything that hit me. Reflecting attacks with 10x the damage dealt to me helped more times than I could count, especially with the random wisps, lemurians, or golems that popped out of nowhere that I just couldn't find. At basically any distance, no less. razorwire had its uses in close range, but antlers were perfect in my opinion.
4:20 i really doubt this but i have to know. a while ago i suggested pretty much exactly this item change to you on youtube comments which you hearted, i had no idea you were giving feedback for items at the time. there isn't any chance i may have had a hand in this items design is there? i imagine that they came to this conclusion themselves before i did but damn it i need to know hahaha
I love the changes. Looks like I'll actually buy the dlc soon. I will say unstable transmitter kinda feels like a red item. Maybe it could have a shorter cooldown for that.
I trusted Gearbox at first, got disappointed but they really are trying to fix the DLC, so maybe a little bit of my trust was restored, hope they can keep restoring my trust in those future updates.
Releasing content before it's ready, well thought out and tested is a big issue and will always keep me cautious about buying anything new, even from a game is really like. Fixing a patch long after its initial release does not fix the launch. That said, it is a big relief that this game still sees the love and attention it deserves, and just because I won't forget past mistakes doesn't mean I'll overlook the work they put in now.
I was going to ask if Gearbox compensated you as a consultant or anything, since you've got a pretty unique form of expertise, and you also seem really creative and reasonable, but then I remembered that it's not really my business, and I hope that you got something (money, satisfaction, etc) out of working with them.
My friend and i, have always tought that Gearbox should hire/ask you to help with the DLC. Great to hear that it actually happened! Im really hoping that this game can bounce back, it really deserves it.

Really felt like they had ideas for other things in the dlc and just threw in some random item ideas without really putting much time or thought into them. It’s great to see that they were willing to work on them
Thank you race for providing all your fantastic feedback to the devs. They deserve praise for reaching out to the community, but so do you for acting as an ambassador for all of us. This really does give me hope for the future of this game, the loadout races, and for the community of ror2. Thank you
i really really happy with what they did with all the changes so far, props to gearbox for being so open to constructive criticism and thanks to you for all the feedback you provided! all the items are super fun now and i can go back to loop runs since the twisted elites arent complete cancer. thanks a lot bro
Goodbye, Antler shield. You may have not been useful, or fun, or cool, or good in any way, but at least you made for some funny coping memes o7
Wow. This is actually incredible all around. Very happy to see this stuff, and thank you for helping them with testing and such, Race!
0:02 like the low taper fade meme
Lets gooo! Really thankful for the hard work all around. Ty devs for working with the community once again. And also ty to you too Race and the other involved community members, i know you guys straight up wrote books addressing all the issues with balance. Can't wait to try this out later today
I feel that Growth Nectar was OK and that there was no need for a change. And they decided to turn Warbonds into the old Classified Access Codes?
I'm very thankful the devs continued to work on this. This makes it very worth the money. I'm hopeful that they will continue to optimize the game
Warped echo engineer gonna be scary.
As someone that has been waiting for mods to be updated and is still waiting, these changes are neat. Can't wait to play again after all the updates are done with
Well, my schedule has been decided today, lol
I played a false son run with the new luminous shot, and it was insanely good - the reduced cooldown on the secondary lets you pump out massive lightning damage
Wow these are massive improvements. I held off on buying the DLC when it came out, but now I'm going to consider it. Some of these new items are AWESOME.
this is amazing, I held off on buying the DLC, now I will go buy it, partially because excited for these, and partially because I want to support this fantastic first step
This is awesome, Im ngl I was certified gearbox hater but Im very glad they didnt abandon the game or criticize the fans for wanting the game improved.
something I've noticed with Gearbox is that there's a bit of a trend of them screwing things up but also being pretty good at fixing what they screw up
huge props to the dev team at Gearbox, they stepped up to fix the mess.
Thank you for helping gearbox cook with the new items
war bonds redemption arc
Luminous shot being total damage instead of base damage is also a huge change
The facts, are that modern day game design has crazy high expectations. They did a great job of making good content and keeping up with it
A bit worried about the lack of healing items
Antler shield on mobile turret engi might go crazy!??! If the turrets spawn orbs everyone goes zoom. And unstable transmitter on turrets will be super funny to see
I'm glad to see knockback fin kept its gimmick and just improved it, i think its super funny and cool but was just lacking a way to capitalize on it, now its awesome
Healing sucks in Eclipse
Were there any healing items before the rework?
the thing is, healing drones always have more opportunity to spawn making healing still more common than most things just in different ways
Even though this is probably going to be the last hurrah for the RoR2 dlcs, I really do appreciate the team going back to fix the mistakes with the dlc. The developers of this game is the thing that keeps it alive
i did not expect them to get this out so fast holy goat wtf
yay! just realized there was an update and all the items were awesome. made a video about it, its so cool.
The craziest part to me about this is when I read the read the dev thoughts I was like "I can't believe they did so good, they should have had streamers and the community help with item effects" and it turns out they did have streamers help lmao
it makes sense that all the items are good now now that i know that you were involved in their design process
good shit
Man, these are some fantastic changes. While they’re still accepting feedback, I’d really like to see the description for bolstering lantern rewritten to better describe what it does. Without you explaining how it worked, I may have avoided it thinking that it granted attack speed TO allies and enemies within the radius and stacked in an almost purely detrimental way. The actual effect makes WAY more sense, it just needs to be worded more clearly.
They did wonderfully with the item reworks. They're all so fun now!
I got unstable transmitter in a run last night, and it was busted. I would have died so many times without it. Epic.
Wow, I'm really impressed with how good these items sound. I haven't bought the dlc yet since I heard about all the bugs and issues with it, and I didn't want so many bad items diluting the pool. Might pick it up after Christmas if all these items change and the bugs get fixed!
luminous w acrid is gunna go crazy now
also could that and thorns make blight acrid great finally?!?
Ok I like a lot of these. Luminous shots effect is still eh but that 20% secondary cooldown is massive so it definitely can be worth a pickup in some multi shops.
we are so back lads!
now the false son boss is next.
keep cooking gearbox!
I think most of these are amazing changes (i didn't see chance doll so I'm assuming no changes) but i noticed that some of these have incredibly nice effects but only upon initial pickup or only the first few. items like bolstering lantern, breaching fin, unstable transmitter (i know the cd is lowered but no hp increase on the shield is kinda weird to me) or growth nectar (which will probably be stronger with mods that add buffs but in base game there are only so many unique buffs). that on its own is fine but feels strange where most items may not scale well but still have noticeable impact even when you have 50 and then get 100. with bolstering lantern you would never really notice because there can only be so many entities spawned at once. im not expecting a stacking like 10 + (10 per stack) but something like 10 + (2.5/stack) or even 10 +(1/stack) would be nice since these eventually stop scaling entirely late game.
this video should prolly be dropped on the RoR2 youtube channel
Edit: watched the gear box video and they did a really good job of showcasing it too
Future of Risk of Rain 2 looks bright
Played this game after not playing for a few months and holy shit the game was actually kinda fun again
The ACTUALLY made good fucking items this is insane
W double agent
Ill definitely buy the dlc now....once on sale. 😅
I'm excited to try Growth Nectar with Wake of Vultures and Death Mark!!!
LOVE THIS SO MUCH!!!!
Lantern has made me cry with the change
I remember feeling almost lost when the DLC came out. I thought it was truly over. I’m so so so glad they’ve stepped up and listened to us to put in the work that they’ve done. I’m sorry for saying such mean things about you Gearbox team. Thank you for your hard work. Maybe I should tell them directly instead of under a Race video…
The future is bright friends
Surprisingly one of my new favorite items to play around is chronic expansion, the little beeps it gives give the item way more QOL, and it's no longer infinite scaling with FMP so it feels way more balanced--only thing is that I wish you didn't hear the engi turrets beeping in addition to yourself.... I feel like you should only be able to hear your own timer
Now every item is great! Amazing update!
i think this goes to show that no one actually wanted to release the dlc when they did, they probably were forced to, and now they are actually doing the work they wanted to do and making sots what they wanted, hope they keep making good changes like this! my only worry is some of these items seem a little too good and might mess up the balance of the game, but we will see
Nice to see someone so positive about the game after watching *cough* Woolie *cough*
I personally liked the antler shield. Get enough of them, and it's essentially a "No u" button for enemy damage that scaled really well in my runs.
Im proud of you race my boy
My first run i got bolstering lantern, bungus, squallup, vending machine and had such a high fire rate
They fucking did it 🥲
might get back on the eclipse climb with this lets go
Oh god. I didn't think Acrid with the new Noxious Thorn. Admittedly, I alway did pick it up with Acrid pre-patch, but now its an S-Tier.
Gang and I will be growing and chronically expanding with this one.
HOLY HELL WE'RE SO FUCKING BACK!!!!!!
All these items sound so fun!
My friend and i, have always tought that Gearbox should hire/ask you to help with the DLC. Great to hear that it actually happened! Im really hoping that this game can bounce back, it really deserves it.
a roadmap for dlc patch notes is insane
and yet its the best thing they couldve done after we got the mess we did (✿◡‿◡)
Knock back fin gonna be best buds with Merc
Does blast shower negate the cooldown on breaching fin? If so I think there's potential for a fun gimmick build there
