Linkin Park is an American alternative rock band from Agoura Hills, California formed in 1996. Integrated by Mike Shinoda, Dave Farrell, Joe Hahn, Brad Delson, Rob Bourdon and Chester Bennington, the latter as lead vocalist. The band began with their first musical works independently, in which they recorded their first material, called Xero; however, they were unsuccessful in the search for a record label, since nobody showed interest in their work. It was not until 1999, that with the support of Jeff Blue, who was vice-president of Warner Records, they managed to sign their first contract. The name comes from a play on words that refers to Lincoln Park in Santa Monica.
In October 2000, the group released their debut album, titled Hybrid Theory, featuring popular singles such as "Crawling", "Papercut", "In the End" and "One Step Closer"; the latter two were certified gold in Australia. Hybrid Theory, which peaked at number two on the Billboard 200, was the seventh best-selling album of the 2000s, and certified diamond in the U.S. and multiple platinum in Europe. The album's fourth single, "In the End," reached its highest position at number two on the Billboard Hot 100.
In March 2003, their second studio album, Meteora, was released. In the first few weeks alone it achieved sales of 810,000 units, the album entered the Billboard 200 at number one, and became the third best-selling album of the year. From this album came songs such as "Somewhere I Belong" and "Numb"; the latter received a gold record in the United States and Australia. That same year, MTV2 named Linkin Park as the sixth "best band in the music video era" and the third "best band of the new millennium", behind Oasis and Coldplay, and Billboard ranked the group as the nineteenth best artist of the decade. In November of that same year, the band released their first live album Live in Texas, which they recorded at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas. The album earned multiple gold certifications in Germany, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Austria. In 2008 they released another live album, Road to Revolution: Live at Milton Keynes.
After Meteora, the band postponed their next album for a couple of years, which some members took advantage of to pursue side projects.89 The band also released two certified remix albums between that time, Reanimation (2002) and Collision Course (2004), the latter featuring a collaboration with rapper Jay-Z on the song "Numb/Encore". This single was certified at the 2006 Grammy Awards.
The group is known for its characteristic musical style that mixes rock, rap and electronic sounds, although from its beginnings it was considered as nu metal, until their second album Meteora, at that time they decided for this and rap metal; however, in their third album Minutes to Midnight they explored again other genres, and chose a "softer" style, oriented to alternative rock. Later, with their album A Thousand Suns they recorded a much more experimental style, which became the band's fourth consecutive album to reach the top of the charts in its first week of sales. The band has sold 100 million records and won two Grammy Awards.
