Even in fields of dead grass, weathered by storms beyond the comfort of man, did a single runt of the litter inhabit its desecrated soil. One day, a Hunter came to the wild lands, poising his talons for its next meal. Instead of malice, the Hunter, upon seeing the runt, granted It a dishonest mercy unknown to the runt. A den to “survive”, but not live, a supply of food poisoned by its “siblings” envy. Within the den, a single, young cub laid eyes upon the pup. Not a gaze that spearheaded into Its essence, but simple curiosity of Its ragged, yet kind nature. The Hunter had prepared a new den for the rest of his pack, fled beyond the fields now laid barren, and finally, escaped the mortal coil to simply seek what laid beyond “life”. Once youthful was the wolf, yet now had the venom of a viper lying beneath Her skin. The Runt had desired to be by Her for all of eternity, yet retreated in dejection after a single spider lily began to grow by the den’s entrance. Retreat was all that the cub knew, and so It fled into corners unknown. When the time was right, the Runt returned to the den, strong and successful enough to accompany Her. Yet, Its’ return was met with the daughter of the elderly crow that had kept watch through its life. In the crow’s mouth, was a bone all too familiar with the Runt. Too late. The Runt stumbled within the den, now too small to sustain Its’ size. A puddle reflected its reflection. Haggard. Roguish. Unworthy to even walk beside Her. In Its anguish, the Runt resolved within Its disgusting heart. Surely, It wasn’t the only being in such a situation. Others must lie within the boundaries of this life, only destined to fall into a fate similar to its own. Perhaps… this would be the mercy of the Runt. Just as the Hunter had once done, the Runt would save those who once inhabited the dead grasslands, and prepare for them a simple grace by a grave. The Runt retained the scars of Its previous encounters, yet was never satisfied until eternity itself could be absolved. The Runt built a shrine of bones to honour Her who had left It so long ago. The Runt stared down at Its equal, as a pack bared upon Its’ neck.
