I used to own a very worn out VHS tape of the Ambrosian singer's production from TV (with Honor Blackman). Good effort all round! Some very nice voices. Good luck for the future!
I know this masterpiece very well (in German language) , this production is very good, no matter if the translation wasn’t always close to the original- also the ending - a nice option though! Love it, well sung ! ❤
Pretty cool performance. Obviously many things were done differently, but the same could be said for the Vienna initial run. This was a fun production.
Offenbach would have had serious difficulty recognizing his score if he had seen the show during his US tour. However, he would have thought it suitable for the country
It was a lot of fun and an original approach. But I couldn't understand why it had to depart so drastically from the original libretto, for example, in the song by the King of the Boeotians. It was surely not necessary to abandon the original in favour of a completely different song. (The English translation used in the Sadlers Wells production is the 1960s is very faithful to the original and a joy to hear - and to sing!)
What a wasted opportunity. So well sung, and incredible orchestral playing. But a total disrespect for the original intentions of the librettist and the composer. As for the ending, totally unacceptable.
Next time someone does an opera for this play, please leave the Can-Can garbage out of the INFERNAL GALLOP scene (capital emphasis for the sake of making things proper by virtue of original intent) and do it the way Offenbach did it in the original score. And anyone who cares for their REPUTATION is a wuss. The worst prison to be in is the fear of what other people think.
it's charming, but they really re-wrote it! the ending is strange and not the original. i won't spoil it. i'd prefer sticking closer to what cremieux and halevy wrote, but i do think they do a good job.
