Well husband you have excelled with the kitchen window, it looks wonderful. You even managed to film it all on your own, well done. Can't wait to see it in Feb! Awesome.....
Great job my freind, what I have learned over many a years working with windows the the trim on top goes all the way across and then the two side pieces run to the bottom and the bottom piece go in between, that way your catching any water, great videos and thanks for your expertise and the time you spend teaching us. 👍🍺😎
I am wanting to build an office with some containers eventually but has wondered, " How am I going to do my widows?". Thank you. Experience and know how saves so much time, energy, money, and above all else headaches! Brilliant!
Hi Kate, welcome to the channel. There is a second video for installing a window on my channel, It is called "shipping containr house - installing a large window" . For details about costs and all the details and mistakes I made, I have an ebook that documents the entire house build that you may find helpful. Details in description. Cheers Paul
It was very rewarding but the video does not show the time that goes into it. I can publish the power board move now. It would have spoiled the window reveal to post it earlier. Cheers Paul
probably you should improve the flashing system around your openings, nowadays I see most of the tradies fixing windows with exp foam and silicon but I reckon the old school flashing methods were the best water tight solutions. I think the L bid you used to stop the water.... well not the rain comes always vertically from the sky you may have storms and the little aluminium corner will do absolutely nothing. Great job all-round I'm learning something. thanks
Yes here is all year nice weather. Not under 19 grads and not over 38 grads . I take a lot of ideas from your vídeos. But must learn how to work whis mashine. Thanks for your answer.
Ta-da! Yep...it does look pretty good. Wouldn't the rain dripper diverter thingy be better across the top of the window? Still, it does look like a professional installed it. !!!!!
Hopefully there will be an awning over the whole front. The drip catcher was an emergency solution. I couldn't fill the corrugations easily and across the top would have stopped the trim from fitting properly. Cheers Paul
+Noel Sowerby I had a go with a plasma and the results "I" achieved did not match what I could do with a cutting wheel, though I have no training or experience with the plasma.
You adding more batteries to your battery bank in 2015, i am using German made Banner marine batteries in my set up, maybe a bit expensive to ship to your location.
I am increasing panels, but not expecting to increase batteries. Finding the right panels is proving a challenge however, they have stopped making my flavor of panels. Its a little disappointing, but I have a solar company looking for me at the moment. Cheers Paul
That was a fun video, the final cut of the metal wall was great. Did you put any foam in the small cracks around the window?, before you added the outer trim?
I didn't think of foam till you suggested it. I have left the trim just bolted and Sarah can put on the finish she wants onto the wood. I am planning on putting up a verandah style awning over it to reduce heat. Cheers Paul
Love it! I am working on our set of containers. Looks like you are having an easier time of it though. The ones I got are not quite built the same. :-(
Hi Microage97, Thankyou. Kitchen bench in progress now, and wiring video to be posted soon. My white container is subtly different construction than the green ones. Good luck with your build. Cheers Paul
Dave Marquis I can imagine. Just cutting the wall welds at the base is hard enough. They widen to about 10mm of weld material to cut. I have used a lot of grinding blades in my project so I know the feeling. Cheers Paul
Kemper B Hi Kemper. I had a bad experience with expanding foam when I was younger. I had not considered it but I think that in the correct hands it would be very successful. Cheers Paul
In my opinion it would be difficult. The welded metal frame allows you to pull the wall back into square. The walls twist when you make a hole. I have ideas about how you could do it without a welder but never tried. Cheers Paul
Start with a solar panel and some LED lights inside your storage container, it might help you decide if you enjoy modifying it. Best of luck either way. Cheers Paul
What is the size of the box steel for the window frames? Did you use the same size for all your windows? Thanks for your videos I find them to be a very helpful resource.
+Billy Barton Hi Billy, I use 50 x 50 mm box section galvanised, 1.6mm wall thickness. I use it EVERYWHERE. It was chosen as suitable for doors and windows. I use it on all items as it lets me maximise offcuts. My kitchen bench frames are the same. It has been a great choice and is used in the solar panel frame rails on the roof. I am pleased you are finding the videos helpful. That was my intention. Cheers Paul
Paul, I've watched everyone one of your videos. I will be building a container home soon and I'm trying to get as much info as possible. Thanks for taking the time to do them. Much appreciated!
Paul, I am building an office out of a used container. What did you do to treat any potential chemical pollutants that may have soaked into the flooring? Very helpful video!
Hi Ajoyhall, welcome to the channel. I have had a look at the website and I can't find a problem. In fact there have been sales since your message so I suspect it is more likely to be at your end. Try the old windows trick of switching your computer off and back on. Hopefully that will do the trick. Get back to me via the contact form of the website if you have further issues, that will give me your email and we can take it from there. Cheers Paul
hai paul, how much height are you? what dimension did you use for the container? is it 40 feet high cube or the 40 feet standard cube, it seem the roof pretty tall when you standing inside it. greet from indonesia.
pinter parkir Good evening Pinter, greeting to Indonesia from Australia. My containers are the 40ft high cube. I walked into a regular container and if you insulated it, I thought it would be claustrophobic unless you were a hobbit and elf or a dwarf. Cheers Paul
Like i though, because i'm 1,85 cm and when walk around insulated container, just like you said, kind like gandlaf walk around bilbo's house. Keep a good work paul. Cheers
+pinter parkir Hi Pinterparkir, i noticed you're from Indonesia and glad you also interested in Shipping container. you know where i can get 40 feet High cube Container in Indo? Salam hangat
Hi Paul! Wondering how much a house of this nature (2 shipping containers, electrical and plumbing NOT included) costs after purchase of materials? Thanks!
Hi Jon, sorry for late reply. I break down my costs exactly in the ebooks. However this is not a pitch. If you contact me via the website contact form I will try and answer it more clearly. I am a little unsure which bits you are trying to price. Ballpark: an insulated framed and sheeted side or roof is around a grand Australian. So 3k to insulate 1 container without windows. Cheers Paul
Tried to buy the book. Paypal charged me, but once the book was opened the chapters wouldn't open. Using the proper ebook. Title and chapter page opens but each chapter link says this. "Sorry can't load chapter:Text/Chapter%20-%201%20-%20Introduction.xhtml Content load failed." Little bummed out.
+Rj U Hi Robert, I am equally disappointed it did not work first time. I have sent you fresh links for 3 different formats. (please confirm I sent the links to your correct email address) I have also sent a free copy of book2 as an apology. I will double check it myself and see if I can reproduce the error. I will always refund if it does not work properly for you. Thank you for buying the ebook, hopefully this will sort it. Cheers Paul
Hi Karl. I was going to install a bullnose (2 metre overhang for shade over the whole window area. Not got round to it yet. I would agree with you. Cheers Paul
Evening Paul, overhang is good it covers everything nicely but just tack on a strip of say 25x 3 flat bar on a 30 degree down angle of the top edge of the 50x50 box, water will run off the front of it and not run back inside in between the window sash and the frame if you know what i mean mate.
You can get that special paint NASA developed for the shuttle, it reflects 95% ultra violet radiation. Would remove heaps of heat from the walls as the roof already blocks direct sun and its available in Australia. I lived in a container home in the Pilbra for a yr making structural steel work, and that aircon never stopped running due to heat passing through the Korten steel. If you get stuck with something give me a hoi.
Hi Karl, good advice. I had the containers painted at the beginning, and added Thermilate, which matches your description. It definitely helped. I selected green paint originally for reasons that no longer apply. Repainting in a reflective color would more than match the benefits of the additive. The good part is painting over the top will still work and they are long overdue painting. Cheers Paul
My answer to you ..Each Container depends on where in the world you buy it from And if its new or used and the size your looking for long or high ..before even that gets done you have to buy land and make sure you can have containers for a home on that land ..Hint : try and stay away from containers that shipped chemicals ..I powerwashed my 3 containers for a hour each ..before i sanded down the floors and repainted the walls even with spray foaming it afterwards ... for me it was $25,000 48 x 24 x 9ft with a basement of equal size but 7 foot hight That was just the start with 1 door 4 windows and wood framing wiring another $1,200 for a drill into a spring water supply
Your window looks great. I enjoyed your video. I have a question though; is the water heater vent far enough away from the operable window? I would worry about carbon monoxide. I know it depends on the unit so some can vent closer to operable windows than others. Just wondering....
Hi undergroundtree, that was an interesting question. The water heater vents to outside and I think that would be ok. I think you are concerned the carbon monoxide would come back in the open window. I doubt it would. The water heater is only on long enough to run a bowl of warm washing up water, and we are generally well ventilated. Cheers Paul
Great video I wish i could i do that with my truck I am slowly trying to build an off the grid unit but i do not have the understanding of how to do somethings . And no one i know do either . so watching the video gives me ideas if you have time check out my channel of my truck and if you have any ideas or something i do wrong let me know thanks again paul .
So fun to see your progress Paul. We are progressing in the build of our homestead as well. My wife just put up some time-lapse videos of the workers framing it up. Its exciting to be part of something like building your own house. check out the video here ruclips.net/video/-RySFdQJxgA/видео.html
I like the time lapse. I have a log I stand on to get the same picture of the dam as the years tick past and the seasons change the scenery. I will take a look at your video, thanks for sharing it. Cheers Paul
I confess I was up late editing the video. That takes nearly as long as the jobs sometimes. I had a relaxing morning to make up for it though. Cheers Paul

That's a very nice wooden window!!!!! Good job on fixing the leak Paul.
Man! It looks superb! So awesome to see you in action.
LOL. I will take that as a compliment. More videos on the way. Cheers Paul

nice window. Just watched Plasma cutting wow so fast, but another set of equipment you would need to buy.

Paul, may I ask why you didn't use a product such as expanding foam insulation in the gap around the window before you installed your custom packers?
Kemper B Hi Kemper. I had a bad experience with expanding foam when I was younger. I had not considered it but I think that in the correct hands it would be very successful. Cheers Paul
hahaha! great answer Paul, great videos, I really enjoy watching everything come together for you both, cheers!
Can you use hardwood or treated pine instead of a steel frame?
In my opinion it would be difficult. The welded metal frame allows you to pull the wall back into square. The walls twist when you make a hole. I have ideas about how you could do it without a welder but never tried. Cheers Paul
Paul Chambers tell me your idea please ??? and couldn't you force the corrugated metal back into shape with a wooden frame?

Nice install of the window :)
nice window:) now I have to fiquire out if Im going to make my shipping container into a cabin? b.o.b gear storage for now.

You should have used a J mould around the top of the window to divert the water. That ally strip looks silly mate.

I'd love to build a home based on shipping containers but i think it would be difficult because of the building department Nazis in my area!
They can make it difficult, especially if they are not out to assist you. Good luck, cheers Paul

thanks brilliant
