- As Donald Trump and Nikki Haley fight it out in New Hampshire, US President, Joe Biden, is launching a campaign to try and put the fight over reproductive rights at the heart of November’s election.
It is a repeat of the strategy Democrats deployed to achieve better-than-expected results in the 2022 midterms.
This comes on the 51st anniversary of Roe versus Wade, the landmark supreme court decision which legalised terminations across the US and was overturned by the US Supreme Court in 2022.
Newsnight's Joe Pike has been in Illinois speaking to some of Carbondale's residents.

It's sad that it's up to a small-town's church community to offer the financial support needed to allow a struggling mother to keep her baby or not. That's something every pro-life citizen should be aggressively pressuring their government to spend their taxes on, instead of harassing vulnerable people on their way to often life-saving procedures.
If you really want to decrease the number of abortions in your country, you should be voting for more food-stamps, subsidized daycare, school lunch programs and paid maternity leave, not passing laws that recklessly endanger women's lives and torture babies that doctors know are slowly dying in the womb.
They assume that every case is about money, that it's always just about someone not having enough money to raise a child. Of course they do, the kind of hypocrites who insist on imposing their personal religious beliefs on others are also the kinds of hypocrites who would blaspheme against Christ's anti-avarice teachings and obsess about money and always be thinking of money. 😒

@@rons.9678 Most pro-choice people don't want to hurt an unborn child any more than you do, the issue is that these types of bans are placing more value on the baby than the mother. There's never a definitive line where a doctor can declare and prove in court "this mother will die unless we abort" there's only a scale of risks and benefits to weigh, and if termination's not an option, the doctors will be forced to never help an endangered mother, and will often lose the baby anyway. There are countless complex scenarios where choosing abortion is what's best for everyone, and it should be decided by the people who fully understand those situations.
Abortion is healthcare plain and simple lawmakers have no business butting into medical decisions...

Why not just let us do whatever needs to be done? Because of your kind, a 12 or 13 year old got "grapped" and she was forced to give birth because it's illegal. To make it worse, she and her family didn't have money to drive or fly to Illinois to get an abortion. There has to be somewhere where people feel okay.

We have about 80 MPS that vote anti abortion ( majority areTories) we can never be complacent, specially when a few religious MPS (Cates,Krueger, Mogg etc)are continually going on about increasing UK birth rates

I cannot accept the phrase my body, my choice, since a foetus has its own DNA from conception. Yes, there are some circumstances in which abortion may be the lesser of two evils. Yes, it is essential if a woman's life is in danger. But it is horrible, horrible, horrible. And maybe if the full horror of abortion were more clear, people would be more careful about pregnancy. Fact: the number of men having vasectomies has risen steeply in the parts of the US where there are stricter limits on abortion.

Why don't both sides of the issue work to promote not getting an unwanted pregnancy in the first place, instead of bickering and arguing about who killed who, etc?
(1) It's impossible to guarantee birth-control. With over 8 billion humans in the world boning constantly, it's just a matter of time until even the most foolproof scenario fails.
(2) The kind of people who insist on imposing their own personal religious beliefs on others are also against birth-control. 😒
The unwanted pregnancies are done by men. So men must be restricted with their activities.

Groomed children, you think just because a baby can grow inside them, that they are adult enough to know what they are getting into? A guy who pulls off the condom without the woman knowing, because he wants to have a full feel? How do you avoid that as a woman?
And even contraceptives are never 100%. So you want people to not ever have sex, unless they plan on having children.

Even the father shouldn't really have much say because it is the mother's body that going through the process.
Well, technically it's the fetus's body inside the mom's body, so this statement does not hold. You can argue that it's a choice between protecting the mom or saving the baby, which would be similar to the Trolley problem.
I also don't get why you said aside from the father. Saying abortion yes/no should be determined by the mom is not a perfect argument, saying it's determined by the dad is worse. You can say that the familial bond is a factor, but I think it's a minor thing.
