    I always get excited when I hear from a secondary MATH teacher. I struggle really hard with planning.

    I teach high school science so I get the struggle. I have the same planner. In my school the lesson plans are super detailed so I plan to break the lesson plan into those boxes. Like do nows, notes, guided practice, independent practice, exit ticket, homework and maybe data. I also bought a regular full sized planner. I'm blending them so I can put the millions of todos and meetings in there. I plan to use the other calendar as a reflection or a parent contact tracker. I also only plan to keep 2 months in at a time so I have a large amount of notes paper in the back for professional development and meeting notes.

      Thank you for sharing! Why didn't I think about taking months out? That's a great idea.

    Thanks, I loved this review! I teach 3 different preps at a middle school, so yes, the elementary planners usually don't align very well to my needs either.

      Thanks for the comment! I just saw your planner set up the other day . its always nice to see how non-elementary teachers make it work for them.

    Fantastic video! I am a middle school teacher (grade 8) and it's difficult to find videos that are not geared towards elementary teachers. I want to set up my lesson plans differently this year. Your ideas and organization are spectacular. Thank you for sharing!

      Thanks for the comment and watching. I'm glad I could help. I give middle school teachers so much credit! I could never do that age group. Good luck with your lesson plans this year! =)

    Thank you for the great video. I am a secondary school maths teacher in UK and I love how different our classes are. I teach in year groups instead of units but I love your set up. Waiting for my timetable and then I can't wait to set up my planner :)

    • @marbhurd
      @marbhurd  7 лет назад

      Year groups? what is that? It definitely is interesting to see how different countries do things. I hope you get a good timetable! =)

    • @hinaburns8760
      @hinaburns8760 7 лет назад

      marbhurd our students are aged 11 - 16 so we teach 11-12 in year 7, 12-13 in year 8 and so on. They all get taught one course but it's staggered throughout the 5 years with it getting more and more intense. Would be interesting to teach modules. We do that at a level here 16+.
      Still waiting on that timetable!

    This will be my 3rd year teaching and I've had up to 5 different preps so I plan on using the daily page by class period (depending on my schedule). I also was going to use the check lists as my grade book, (I ordered more pages from happy planner). It was nice go see how another secondary teacher will set these up, I feel like so much of this is geared toward elementary teachers.

    • @marbhurd
      @marbhurd  7 лет назад

      oh my! How do you maintain your sanity with so many preps? I had enough issues when I had three! But I definitely think using it by period would help in that respect. I hope makes your job easier! =)

  • @dawns1017
    @dawns1017 5 лет назад +1

    I know this is old, but hopefully you look at comments on older videos. I use The Happy Planner to teach college online. Like you I use the page on the left for my various classes/subjects.
    I use the page on the right for notes and communications.
    I would put meetings on the monthly pages.and maybe just a meeting sticker on the weekly page so you do not forget about the meeting..
    What planner are you doing now?

    Thanks for sharing! It's hard as a high school teacher to use these pre-made planners! I settled on Plum Paper - they put the days at the top and the subjects along the side and it helps me use up all those lovely boxes that are always hard to use!

    • @marbhurd
      @marbhurd  7 лет назад

      The Plum Paper planner is definitely a nice one. I think it suits HS teachers better. The selling point for the Happy planner one for me was the price...otherwise I would've just kept printing my own. =)

    I teach high school math as well. I am also super annoyed with everything geared toward elementary teachers so I'm excited I found your channel! I've seen very few high school teachers on here, let alone those who teach math. I think I am going to use two columns for one prep since I write big. So the first two for Alg2 honors, the second two for Geom. and the next two for AP calculus, and then the last one I will probably use for my PLC or for the club that I sponsor. Thanks again for the in-depth video! I think I want to steal your big rectangular sticker idea. :)

    • @marbhurd
      @marbhurd  7 лет назад +1

      High School Math teachers unite! hehe Glad I could help you get ideas. I was debating using two columns per course but I think I did okay writing small in my previous planners, but I didn't have lined boxes then so we'll see. If it doesn't work, I think i'll use two boxes too. Thanks!

    I teach high school math too. Thank you so much. I've been struggling so hard to find a good planner. I love other planners but Primary and Secondary Grades need different planners.

    • @marbhurd
      @marbhurd  7 лет назад

      High school math teachers unite! =) I think you can definitely modify some of the primary planners out there to an extent to fit a high school life, but we definitely have different needs. I hope you are able to find one that works for you!

    Thank you for sharing your plan. 3 years later how did it hold up? I just purchased the happy planner homeschool planner although I am a high school elective teacher. I like the dates on the top instead. My first year teaching was this year and I used the planner from your video. I hated the subjects at the top - I teach financial literacy and entrepreneurship. I think I may be ok with the happy planner vertical layout next year. I did a whole video on my channel going through the 3 layouts and I am leaning more in the vertical direction. It was nice to see what you planned to do. I hope to fine a more recent video of yours and how it turned out.

    Love this! Go High School Math!! I found Avery labels 5422 fit the daily boxes. They take up two lines. Avery online has tons of cute icons to use with them. Made them for to do things that repeat often. (i.e. Check Tardies, Update Website, etc.) Loved seeing your old calendar as well.

      I forgot to mention they come on 4x6 sheets so you can just run a few through at a time.

    I use the first box as my "teacher day"
    That is where I write that I have an IEP meeting for Johnny at 8:30 am, department meeting at 10, Feldman learning walk 1-6th hours, Early release, etc.
    Then I use 4 boxes for my classes (one of my classes is a two hour block) even though I only have 2 preps, I like to have a box for each class so I can write my note of something like Mary in 5th hour needs her work because she will be gone for 4 days or basketball kids leave 10 minutes early in 5th hour, etc.
    One box is for a TO-DO
    Last box is for "personal"--Dr. appointment at 4:30 so I know to get my butt out of the door! or pick up pizza from Papa Murphy's cheer fundraiser event before 5:00, etc. things that I need to see when I am at school. My personal more detailed planner is separate.
    Check lists section will be new to me this coming year. I think I will track who comes to our intervention program voluntarily as those required to come are on our roster in our digital but still unsure
    That has been the best for me so far but when my schedule changes... who knows!
    Thanks for the video!

    • @marbhurd
      @marbhurd  7 лет назад

      Thank you for sharing what you do! Where will you put the checklist section since it seems like you already used up 7 boxes for all the rest. I do like your idea to put the first box as your teacher box. Great ideas! =)

    I am a high school math teacher also and it's great that I finally found a video to help me for next year. I was wondering where did you get this planner because it looks amazing. I've been searching for one for weeks now and some of them don't have exactly what I'm looking because they are based more on Elementary teachers.

    • @Shajarena
      @Shajarena 7 лет назад +1

      Ray You can get the happy planner is from Michaels.com or you can check your local Michaels stores.

    • @marbhurd
      @marbhurd  7 лет назад +1

      Ray, Shajarena is correct. I bought mine from michaels.com because I don't have a physical Michaels store in my state. They are always having discount coupons and sales which makes it reasonable. I think they may also have some at Hobby Lobby. I hope this helps!

    Being a high school teacher makes it doubly hard to use these planners. Love how you took the time to talk about everything. Can you tell me though where you got the printable planner you used previously. tfs

    • @marbhurd
      @marbhurd  7 лет назад +1

      I actually made the printable planner myself. The monthly I made using tables in word. The weekly I did in excel. I just kept tweaking the boxes until it was something I liked. sorry i'm not more helpful.

    Hello, I like the video. I teach middle school Reading. I also use the MAMBI Planner. Your setup looks great. I was wondering if all of your classes are at the same learning points. I noticed that my classes were not always learning at the same pace, what about your students.

    • @marbhurd
      @marbhurd  7 лет назад

      I try my best to make sure all my students are at the same place but you're right, there are times when one class is behind or ahead so having that extra column came in handy at times. Or sometimes if I had an activity to finish up for one class I would put it in a different color within that box so I would remember. The struggle to teach all the content in the time given and balance it with student learning is my biggest one.

  • @artzyplans2738

    How do you like the cover? I am debating getting one for my teacher planner because I worry about it being sturdy. Love this video! I'm a high school teacher also so I hate how all of the planners are geared towards elementary school teachers

    • @artzyplans2738
      @artzyplans2738 7 лет назад

      Also, another idea I've seen was to put Washi over two subjects for one class. So, maybe your algebra class takes up two columns.. just an idea ;) And you can do a meetings column, a to-do column, etc..

    • @marbhurd
      @marbhurd  7 лет назад +1

      the hard snap-in cover seems very sturdy. I have one on my mini planner and it takes the wear and tear in my purse but I can see how the corners might get worn quicker. But better than the laminated cover. It definitely bulks up on the discs as I don't think i can fit many more pages if it keep everything already in it. I'm considering switching to expander discs, or taking out some future months in the beginning like the commenter suggested below. Thanks for watching and the suggestions! I have lots of wash tape to try things out. =)

  • @LauraZinser
    @LauraZinser 7 лет назад

    Can you explain what you used to make the date stickers for each week? Love the video.

    • @marbhurd
      @marbhurd  7 лет назад

      Thanks for your comment! I used Silhouette Studio to create the date stickers but I can see doing it in word and cutting it out by hand since they aren't fancy. You just have to figure out what size you want and then print it on sticker paper. Though gluing regular paper could work too, but a little more tedious. i hope that helps. =)
