    For the HVAC you only have to remove the AC button, 4 lever covers, and the face plate. Then you can use a small screwdriver to press the tab on the translucent plastic to remove it and give you access to the bulb. It's designed to come out the front. The way you did it is way more extreme and unnecessary. To pop off the cover you can either pop the corner of the dash off as it's held in by clips and push from behind or you can remove the radio cover and reach behind.
    For the cluster you do not have to remove the steering column or the trim around it. All you have to do is remove the screw that holds the black plastic cover, then remove the 4 screws that hold the cluster in place. Turn it sideways and you can either reach all 4 lights like that or you can reach the plugs to remove the cluster. Takes a little wiggling to get out but easy enough to do.

      @LabCoatPaul  3 года назад +4

      Excellent advice, thank you. What year is your RAV4? I recently found out the dashboard trim is different on the earlier 1996 and 1997 model years (my RAV4), and the later 1998 and up model the black dash trim just comes out.
      My instrument cluster is not flat at the bottom, and dips down about 3 more inches on each side of the steering column, making it impossible to remove. I've pulled really hard on it, with no luck.

      @@slickstretch6391 Well.. a smart person would compare the colors with the car disassembled, but I decided to do it the hard way!
      Actually there's a little bit more to the story. Setting up the camera inside the car is extremely difficult, and taking the dash apart was a little tricky too. I took the dash apart 3 times as practice runs before recording the video. That way I knew the best steps, in the exact order they need to be done, so I could minimize the amount of footage I have with me just fumbling around and doing stuff wrong.

    Thanks to everyone's input, I discovered DROPPING THE STEERING COLUMN IS NOT NEEDED on the 1998 and newer RAV4. If you have a 1996 or 1997, you still have to do it. Toyota changed the instrument cluster trim for the later models.

      @@darktar2175 On the 1997 and older RAV4, the instrument cluster trim dips down below the steering column trim and it's impossible to remove it unless you get the steering column out of the way. Note to those that have a 2000, US, and 4-door. You don't have as many steps as Paul but it's essentially the same. You still have to drop the steering, pull the dash, etc. BE CAREFUL WITH THE DASH your wire harness is probably thick and old so don't pull to hard and to the right. You're going to flip I upside-down instead. AC side is the same as Paul's
      Anyways, Red is definitely dimmer than Paul's example but works great too.

      In 1998, Toyota re-designed the dashboard and made it easier to work on. You don't need to drop the steering column to remove the trim around the gauges in your car.

      The stock dashboard looks good and works perfectly. There is no logical reason to replace it. What happens when you unplug the seatbelt light connector under the seat? On my car (not broken) the light stays on when it's unplugged. If I connect both terminals on the wires coming out of the floor, with a jumper wire, the light turns off.

      @@handsarecats The easy option of course is just leave it unplugged. You might have a loose connection at the instrument cluster connector that has the seat belt warning wire, or maybe the light bulb has a bad connection. 1996 and 1997 RAV4 dashboard trim is shaped so it doesn't come out unless you drop the steering column. 1998 - 2000 is a different shape and doesn't require moving the steering column. If you're lucky, your car will have wiring for the dash lights dimmer, so you can just plug one in.

    If your lucky and have a tilt steering wheel you can just take the dash cluster cover off and take the cluster out. Or if your like me and don't have a tilt steering wheel, you can bend the crap out of the cover and take it out like i did.

    There's a much easier way to do this: Instrument Cluster:
    Remove (1) philips head screw from cluster bezel(center top of bezel) and gently work the bezel free and out.
    Undo (4) screws holding instrument cluster (use magnetic driver or be careful not to drop them down into the dash)
    Angle the LH side of the cluster out and unclip the connector so you can access the backside of the cluster.
    Identify the (4) bulbs; remove and replace the bulbs.
    Reverse to reassemble.
    No need to drop the steering column.
    The Bezel is a tight fit, so be patient with it.
    You can also replace the Climate control bulb without removing the dash facia;
    Remove the radio instead; much easier
    Pop the three switches out;
    Pull the climate control out slightly
    Use fine pair of tweezers/needle nose pliers to gently pull the bulb out;
    Replace and restore.
    This method requires a little more dexterity and physical flexibility, that's all.
    Tip: Have a couple of replacement bulb sockets on hand: some bulbs may have fused themselves into the socket..

      Removing the instrument cluster in a 1996 and 1997 RAV4 requires dropping the column. 1998, 1999, 2000 it's easier, like you said.

      @@LabCoatPaul I have a 1997 RAV4 XA11. I replaced all the instrument cluster illumination bulbs just by removing the bezel and the four screws. I also replaced the climate control illumination bulb without removing the entire dash bezel; I removed the stereo and accessed the control unit and the bulb from underneath. It takes a little more dexterity and careful use of needle nose pliers, but it was still easier than removing the dash bezel.

    • @LabCoatPaul
      @LabCoatPaul  3 года назад

      If the engine is shaking on idle, you may have a misfire. Replace your spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, and rotor. Also check your air filter. ruclips.net/video/ajq626xx6zM/видео.html
      If your engine is dying or having trouble finding a smooth idle, you may need to clean the idle air control valve and throttle body. ruclips.net/video/O3yb5RIlqPM/видео.html
      If the idle is too high, you may have a vacuum leak. The hoses on the RAV4 are old, and some of them are cracked. You can spray carburetor cleaner at the hoses while the engine is running. If the RPM's go up, you've found a leak.

      All the illumination bulbs in the gauges should be the same size. If you're using LED's turn on the lights before installing the dash back in the car. If one of the LED's doesn't work, flip it around 180 degrees and try again. The A/C button uses a smaller light bulb. I haven't researched that one so I don't know what bulb that is.
