    Ahoy! So, quick head’s up. I noticed while editing the video that a fairly prominent RUclips film critic can be glimpsed very briefly in one of the crowd shots. Curious if anyone spots them.

      Thanks. As I say in the video, I was kinda overwhelmed by it, but in a good way. I was extremely nervous going, because I assumed it would be very stuffy and formal - and part of it was, to be clear. But I was also swept up in how much of it is really just about trying to make movie-making sustainable outside the major studio system.

      Ah, I wanted to capture a sense of what it was like to be there, as best I could.
      I was surprised at how accessible and welcoming a lot of it was. I honestly had a very formal impression of it in my mind and there is an element of that - tuxedoes! - but there was a lot more to it.

  • @Pecisk
    @Pecisk 2 месяца назад +11

    What I have heard from people going there that it is truly genuine despite being quite pompous. Because everyone there loves movies, and is incredibly passionate about what they are doing. And that essentially is saving grace why I still love this art form.

    • @Darren_Mooney
      @Darren_Mooney 2 месяца назад +1

      Oh yeah. It’s very French. There is a clear sense of this is how things are done, and it can be quite conservative.
      But I also found it very accessible and the staff really helpful, both over email and in person.

    • @HeyRileyLemon
      @HeyRileyLemon 2 месяца назад +1

      @Pecisk it's quite easy for such events to appear self-important however on a personal level, its almost impossible to overstate how affirming it can be being immersed in a town predicated on a passion that normally marks you apart, and populated by people who embody all the different aspects of what you love about the medium.

    Getting a view of how cramped that theater was makes me feel like I'd have been miserable there on the sheer fact that I wouldn't fit in the seats with how little leg room there looked to be.

      Oh yeah, most screenings were packed out. Except for the midnight on Friday: “She Has No Name.”

      @Darren_Mooney At 6'4" (193cm), I barely fit in the luxury theater seats at my local theaters. I almost exclusively go to Alamo theaters because of the added leg room they have (so servers can drop off food from the attached restaurant).

    What an absolutely charming video! I grew up in france, and got used to the Cannes film festivval being a yearly event to look forward to on TV. Every big talk show on TV would pack up and go to cannes for the week and do there shows from there while interviewing all the stars and film directors. There was always a lot of excitement around it. However, I'd never actually seen how the festival works from a critics persepective on the inside, which made this video extra interesting. Nice one Darren Mooney!

    As film festivals have a tendency to become their own micro climates where the on set cabin fever can impact some critics views, itd be interesting to hear a debrief (maybe on the Rewind) and if your opinion changes in the following months when these begin to get distributed into the world.

    • @Darren_Mooney
      @Darren_Mooney 2 месяца назад +2

      Ha! It is a fascinating microcosm. As I noted, forty-odd films in twelve days, plus talks, interviews, virtual reality, writing, exploring, etc.
      There is a point where you are operating more on adrenaline than reason. But I will say that the reactions to seeing movies post festival has been even greater affection (“Furiosa”) or about the same (“Kinds of Kindness”).
      But even within the festival, a second viewing in a different context gives shade to a film. “Horizon” is a much better movie in IMAX with popcorn and sugar than in an auditorium without either.

    Together with the criterion collection Cannes is probably one of the main reasons i venture out of my comfort zone that is Hollywood for the most part as far as features goes that i watch and where they are from. It is easy to think that features in the festival is highly pretentious and hard to approach for the main stream feature fan, and sure you have that aswell but it would do Cannes a dis service to say all entries are pretentious.

    What a fun inside look into an event that I only had a passing interest in. Now I legit want to go! How hard is it for a casual fan to be able to get in to see movies at Cannes?

    • @Darren_Mooney
      @Darren_Mooney 2 месяца назад +1

      Because it’s an industry festival, it doesn’t really cost money, outside of travel, food and accommodation.
      If you get accredited, you can basically see and do as much as you want. That includes the talks, virtual reality, etc. It doesn’t technically cost anything, money wise.
      The issue is to get accredited, you need to either work in the industry or have a publication (print, online, audio, video, etc.) that will support you.
      I want to shout out Nick and Marty for just being incredible at helping to get Second Wind accredited by Cannes.

    It seems like a very particular kind of literary fiction style film is promoted. Sci-fi and fantasy are sidelined, only films accepted by the audience are allowed in a token way. These sort of films don't appeal to me, it sounds like there are few really subversive arthouse films.

    • @Darren_Mooney
      @Darren_Mooney 2 месяца назад +4

      I’d push back on that. Of the films I cover in this essay, off the top of my head, “Furiosa”, “Megalopolis”, “The Shrouds” and “The Substance” are all science-fiction.
      And though going into more detail would risk spoiling it, “Sister Midnight” is a sort of fantasy film and I’d argue “Kinds of Kindness” veers over into it as well.
