    A vastly underrated band, and now (criminally) almost forgotten. Anyone who loves this music has sophisticated ears! Their style carried on in legions of imitators, but without the musical substance. Duran Duran wish they could have created music this significant and timeless...

    • @griiseknoen
      @griiseknoen 6 лет назад +3

      Yup. This is crazy good.
      It still amazes me how they went from tacky glam-rock to tacky synth-pop to absolute GENIUS within just a few years.
      And then they promptly broke up... :(

    • @DpHsHd
      @DpHsHd 6 лет назад +15

      I'm not sure that it's fair to say that Japan passed through a phase of "tacky synth-pop." When do you think that was? Even the transitional album, Quiet Life, is never less than interesting, and parts have classic status among Japan fans, particularly the book ends of the original release. I'd accept tacky glam-rock to Genius, though! Of course, Japan's demise is not all bad news: David's output has been extraordinary since Brilliant Trees (with collaborators like Robert Fripp, Bill Nelson, Kenny Wheeler, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Fennesz, etc you have some of the most imaginative exponents of avant pop/jazz in history) - a true artistic journey into far flung places, with considerable beauty and aural challenges along the way; Mick's work was never less than engaging and some is stellar (don't overlook Dali's Car, his collaboration with Pete Murphy, which is about as avant-garde and sonically minimalist as post-punk funk could ever be); and Richard and Steve continue to produce more than ordinarily interesting material in an electronic/ambient vein; the side projects and collaborations have continued to push the envelope regarding what can be done within the language of popular music; and the Rain Tree Crow album is Japan in all but name. Anyone who likes what they hear here has 35 years of post-Japan back catalog to dive into. You lucky people, you!

    • @greatwhite61967
      @greatwhite61967 5 лет назад +5

      They were not underrated by their true fans & I met up with many on a Facebook via a page dedicated to Mick & Japan called TMK aka Team Mick Karn...
      Duran Duran were actually huge fans of Japan & wanted the members of Japan to collaborate & produce one of DD albums but the boys from Japan were too busy & they were getting to stage of breaking up by that point...
      Many people can't take it in that they split but unless you've been in a band of close friends & a family member it becomes a case of " Not If But When " will that band split as everyone grows up & fast becomes their own voice & wants to add more in the collaborative efforts of the band but there's usually what I call The Lord Of The Ringers mentality but instead of One Ring to rule them all it's One Member of the band to rule them all & eventually everyone has their breaking point...
      I'm actually surprised that they managed to stay together as long as they did considering the internal problems that went on within the band so to get the " Tin Drum " album was a testament to all of them wanting to finish on a high...
      Thankfully the music didn't end there as Steve/Richard & Mick made their own solo albums along with forming JBK aka Jansen/Barbieri/Karn...
      Then you had The Dolphin Brothers with Steve & Richard & there are times when Steve does sound quite like his brother David in the singing department...
      Mick went on to have, to me anyway, his own voice & his debut album " Titles " is one of my favourite album from all of the members from that band & of course David went on to have a successful solo career but again you would have to be in the inner circle of these band members as they were not your usual mainstream band...
      Its sad that in 2019 I still have not seen one single documentary about such a group of talented individuals who created there own unique look & style of music & were making music in the mid 70s well before Punk hit & managed to survive that short lived movement to come out the other end as this amazing band that was difficult to pin down as any type of genre...
      What worrys me is that we've already lost Mick Karn to cancer in 2011 at 52 years young...
      David to me has been one of the most thought provoking singer song writers that I've come across, but there does seem to be only those fans from the early years that are still spreading the word of their early work in Japan & all of the members solo projects...
      Mick Karn to me is one of my biggest influences on playing fretless bass as like Mick im self taught & don't box myself in by absolutism that tends to follow the standard teaching of most musical instruments...
      I'd hate to see them finally get the recognition they deserve after they've passed on but then again they didn't play the fame game but I'd like to see them get their recognition as it's long overdue...
      .....

    Mick Karn's bass play on "C.B." is otherworldly, something that

    i went to Japan's Farewell Tour when it arrived at the Manchester Apollo. I still have The program to remind me it wasn't a Dream. I fell in love with Mick Karn's Bass and the seductive soundscape they created as a unit with David Sylvian's voice and the drumming is just timeless and unique. I saw David Bowie at Wembley Empire Pool on the 8th of May 1976 when he Performed Station to Station as The Thin White Duke and I felt that was the best thing I'd ever witnessed .....until I saw Japan perform. it would be unfair to compare but they certainly sit alongside each other like bookends. it reminds of China Girl by David Bowie and Iggy Pop did a great version of that too. For those who are not aware they did come back together Japan as Rain Tree Crow and its just another great Album by a disgracefully underated Band.

      It's a pity they only show about 30 seconds of Richard on this video. Also it's a bit annoying how on songs like Still Life In Mobile Homes they mainly show the footage of life in China rather than the band playing. I can understand why they did it at the time, but in retrospect it wasn't a good decision. I wonder if they still have the original footage?

    In terms of dating this performance, Wikipedia reports & Mick Karn's book suggests it must be November 1982. The Sons of Pioneers Tour, or 'walking on eggshells' tour as Mick named it, brought the band back together as they had already split in December 1981, but the promise of a tour, album 'Oil on Canvas', and video saw them unite for six nights at Hammersmith Odeon prior to splitting for good

      It wasn't just 6 nights in London, they did a massive tour in Europe, the UK and Japan from October to December 1982.

    I saw their gig in Osaka Japan in 1981. Masami, the guitarist wasn't there that time. Definitely this was in 1982, however its so good, just reminding me the passion since 35 years ago. I was always big fun for Mick!

    I was at this concert. I remember feeling totally out of fashion having just come over from NZ to the UK. What a way to find some new fashion sense.

    Me encantan Japan, tambien me maravillo d como pasaron d un Glam-rock standard a los dos discos finales....tan, tan...!! No se explicarlos..!! Maravillosos, enigmaticos, bonitos....Alucino x como es, como toca el bajo, su imagen...ese movimiento con motor.....d Mick Karn y su instrumento....Para los artistas que adoro...quizas tengo una palabra ' que los defina'...Para Japan....yo, no tengo palabras para ellos......!!!..

    For those arguing the dates. I saw Japan at Hammersmith Odeon 4 times; February 1981, May 1981, December 1981 and November 1982. They were also playing the Tin Drum stuff at the December 1981 gigs .. Pretty sure this is one of the December gigs

      This is the Oil On Canvas vid which as everyone knows was from the Odeon in 1982, the late 1981 set started with Canton as the intro music and they opened with Swing, whereas this set has Burning Bridges as the intro and then Sons Of Pioneers.How can you overlook such obvious considerations ?

    What is amazing is that none of them could play an instrument 4 and a half years earlier, and yet this sounds so accomplished. Maybe it ain't that hard to learn, maybe the synth is doing most of the work, or maybe the stars aligned.

      They had been playing together since 1974. Once they got their hands on good quality instruments they just took off. The synths really expanded their vision.

    The best ensemble of the modern era. Band sounds too simplistic for musicians like this. David Sylvian is still the leader in most modern music. Exceptional.
