Amazing that he once said this, and presumably believed it, and is now his supposedly proud running mate. Perhaps he's an unprincipled opportunist or perhaps he's deluded himself into believing that by working with Trump he can moderate his worst instincts, like Kelly and Sessions claimed to have done in his first term. But this is something that only a MAGA republican and a handful of DINOS would do.
That said, it's a horrible thing for him to have said, politically, and it's going to be used aggressively by Dems to not only tarnish him and Trump, but drive a wedge between them.
