Knowing Vienna well I find the hints very good and informative. Things. But there is one little information missing. The reason not to use the City Airport Train (CAT) is that the public transport line S7 (Schnellbahn = Fast Train) runs in parallel at much, much lower cost and takes just a short time longer by stopping at more quite convenient stations.
Whoops. Just posted this before seeing what you posted. Yeah, when visiting my gf in Austria I always jump on the S7. It's super cheap and it's what? 30 minutes or so?
If the S7 is the way to go to the city, can one, at least, do a detailed video as to how to use the system?
And I mean detailed, from how do you get to it, how to buy tickets, how much they cost, how to use the tickets, where to exit, and so on.
Many videos of public transportation systems around the World are not covering it in great detail leaving occasional visitors standing around and wondering what to do next.
Not to say anything too negative about S7, but: What if one prefers clean, smell-free, empty trains that run non-stop from the airport to the centre? Perspective: The airport train from Oslo airport (30 euros), now that is a near-catastrophe. The CAT really isn't.
If you compare it to the Railjet train (1,90€) which also leaves every half hour, the cat is still too expensive imo!
@@viennacalling-travelguide4727 how can i get that ticket
Being Viennese I can tell you: Sascha is right, you can believe everything he is telling about. Especially you want to save money and do not want to step into tourist-traps.
Thanks for the support! ♥️
@@viennacalling-travelguide4727Macht als Local dann irgendwie dezent depressiv wenn soviele Sachen für die wir ja national bekannt sind als Scam erweisen. Das Gefühlt hat man nämlich nicht mehr nur als Tourist leider...
Hi, is the S7 railjet included in Public transport pass?
As an Austrian living in Vienna I absolutely agree to all the facts mentioned, expecially to Cat, water, Torte at a price around 6 Euro per piece...
As someone with some familiarity with Vienna, I must say this is a very good video, with accurate tips and a great delivery style.
The best water I have ever drank period was the tap water in Vienna !! I had a wonderful eight days there with many great and unforgettable memories.
That’s so awesome! So glad you liked it ❤️😎
I'm preparing for my trip to Vienna later this year. Your videos have been really helpful thank you so much! :)
Amazing content! It will be great for all the backpackers, budget "travellers" (not 'tourists') who really want to enjoy and feel the culture of Vienna. Please be regular with more such tips.
Thanks for the support! We would like to welcome all people 😉 but yeah backpackers have a special place in our hearts ♥️
As a fellow Austrian, I have to say this is an amazing video and super accurate as well. 100% true and no bullshit. Very good
Best SacherTorte? Any special places that are more for locals? Thanks. Going there tomorrow
Vienna has a special place in my heart because it was my honeymoon destination. My husband and I absolutely fell in love with this beautiful city the moment we landed. Please continue adding more content because we love seeing this wonderful city through your channel.
We will try to keep uploading more stuff in the future! Why did you choose Vienna as your honeymoon destination? Maybe you can also help others with your experience :)
Yes we need that Sacher video with the alternatives please!! 🥺
My aunt went there years ago and we were surprise why she travelled there in the first place. Now i know why. Vienna is amazing❤
As a Czech who spent in Vienna several months I'd add that the tourist shouldn't stay only in the city center. For example Wienerwald is so acessible by public transport and I was supprised by the nature and views there.
So true! Cheers to Czechia 🇨🇿
Can I ask you the best place to try Sacher Torte?
Wienerwald is SO FAR from the centre though isn't it?
@@imane8736 It's roughly 30 to 45 minutes from the city centre by public transport, which is not so far away for me
Kahlenberg is also great and its easily accessible. From architectural perspective there are many interesting buildings as well in the outskirts like Gasometer or Hundertwasser's Spittelau incinerator. Greetings from Hungary!
It's a shame for Vienna that we still couldn't get rid of the Euromat ATMs. Sorry to all tourists!
Each country in the region has many of them and these machines are always located in the most touristic places. I think the Czechs have the most Euronets.
Heya! Your videos are the best. It’s SO HARD to find videos that are straight to the point without the annoying “HI GUUUUYS” in the beginning, honestly this is a relief 😂 Thank you for all the great tips, and please keep the great videos coming!
Thanks for all the practical tip! Now I'm excited to go!❤
I would go so far as to say "Don´t miss out on the tap water!". I´m from Sweden and have lived eight years in Vienna now. I have been spoiled with good quality, drinkable tap water my whole life - but I rank Viennas tap water as one of the best I have ever tasted (yes, water tastes different depending on where it comes from).
Viennas tap water is safe, most often free, tastes great and is very refreshing! :) If you want an alternative, drink one of Austrias nice beers or a Radler.
What a lovely Comment :)
Much love to Sweden!
Dont forget they also have the best toilet water in the world 🤣🤣. But on a more serious note, it is basically mineral water coming from the mountains!
@@werpu12 that is a special kind of luxury in Vienna - I flush my poop away with Alpine mountain water. 😁

Thank you for the hints! Cant wait to see Vienna in person finally next week!
Thank you very much for all your tips and information. We have just returned from 4 days in Vienna. Followed your advice and have had a super time.
In my experience going to Vienna, you can just get on the S7 to Praterstern from the airport for the price of a normal single ticket. 2.30 or something thereabouts. One of my favourite things about Vienna is how cheap transport is compared to the UK.
Very nice video, i've been waiting for a ytb channel of this type for such a long time. Thank you and please continue in your work!
We will try our best! Thanks for the support 😎
Sasha, one of the best videos I saw Re Vienna tips, very informative, smart snd spontanious! Keep up with great work! Support!
Thanks amil for the support 😎👍🏻
Have lived in Vienna for several years. I am non-Austrian and can relate to all things mentioned. And Naschmarkt I personally hate, because it’s a market where you always have to struggle for a better price. Spar is my love. Especially their Radatz Kaseleberkasesemmel
I remember the old Naschmarkt. It actually used to be a market place, not a butique restaurant place that it has been turned into.
Good observation indeed!
going on a vienna trip tomorrow and this is the vid i needed the most. Vielen Dank

Loved this video so much! I used to live in Vienna back in 2007.... I live in the US now and find myself trying to pass on the left side of the escalator but people choose to stand still, so annoying!

The SIGH if tourists do something wrong is so on point.
I think the world misunderstands the "unfriendliness" of Viennese people. Viennese people are very honest with their reactions and mimic. They don't give a shit when they have a bad day - they will let you know they have. But generally, Viennese are friendly and helpful.
Man könnte fast sagen dann, dass sie anscheinend, ziemlich oft einen schlechten Tag haben.....😉
They are not very friendly but quite helpful, generally.

Love your videos, Sascha! You and your team are great! Super entertaining and informative.
I’d love to know a little bit more. Here are some things I’m still researching, maybe some video ideas?
- University of Wien! A little bit about the campus and sightseeing.
- Must see museums
- Different metro passes and what they actually mean/offer
- Zoos/Aquariums I’ve heard some things about these!
- Kahlenberg, is it worth it what to do there (and other possible hiking spots)
- What to do/where to go in the (unfortunate) case of an emergency (who to call, police stations hospitals etc)
- Best bakery spots
- Common grocery stores to shop at
- Nicest hotels in Vienna
- Where to avoid!
Keep up the good work!
Hey abby! Thank you so much for your support! We will keep those things in mind. People like you are the reason we love making it. Have a wonderful day, Sebastian 😘
The must see places in Vienna are Laufhauses. I lived in Vienna for one year and I saw many museums and other interesting things there but the best fun I had in Laufhauses.
Always looking forward to your videos

@@viennacalling-travelguide4727 yes hopefully in March
Many thanks! I saw many similarities between Vienna and NYC, especially the public escalator manner. Look forward to my family trip to Vienna during the week of 4/9/23.
Thanks buddy! If you have any questions until then let us know 😊 don’t take the CAT when flying into Vienna 😂
@@viennacalling-travelguide4727 Why not? You mentioned it in the video but did not explain. Visited Vienna twenty days ago and arrived there on a Saturday late night and based on Google maps CAT was by far the fastest and easiest way to get to the city center. Although more expensive (19 euros for a round trip)
@@DLGemma There's a commuter train that does the same job for about 4 €. It's a slightly longer ride (more stations) but it's by far cheaper.
I think such manner is ubiquitous. Here in Moscow we do that as well, especially in busy places such as our underground.

Thanks, Sasha, for the most valuable tips. Just a couple of comments, if I may. I am an expat who has lived in Vienna for the last 16 years. I totally agree that Naschmarkt, for instance, is way overpriced for regular grocery shopping although it has some of the city's most charming restaurants and bars. I only buy things at Naschmarkt very seldom because there are a few that you cannot get anywhere else. That's true. Regarding the CAT train to the airport, as a local, if you have an OeBB card, you get a 50% discount, which at around 7.50 EUR one way makes it just about as reasonable as taking a bus or a regular S-Bahn train. But of course, if the tourists don't have a railway discount card, it makes it quite pricey. On the Viennese grumpiness - it's legendary, and some people may come across as really unfriendly. After all, Vienna has been rated as the second unfriendliest city in all of the Europe after... yes - you guessed it - Paris. :)))) My advise is - just take it in stride and don't pay attention. More often than not it's not directed at you just because you are a tourist. It's just the way it has been for ages... Great tip also about the Sunday shopping. Overall, if you only have one day in Vienna, do NOT go on Sunday unless your main purpose is to stroll in city parks or visit some museums. Vienna on Sunday is empty and can be quite boring. The best time to enjoy it is during the week... Have fun, everyone!
I gotta say thanks for the valuable tips! Our main focus is to give tourists the best experience when coming to Vienna!
If you have any more tips for our future videos feel free to tell us here or send us a dm on Instagram! Kind regards, Seb 😉
About the CAT, it is expensive. I went back from the airport yesterday and it was my first time using public transportation from there. I compared prices from buses, trains, and the CAT. With a normal train it cost 4,30 from the airport to Vienna and with my annual ticket discount it ended in 1,90 euros. So it is better to use normal trains.
@@CarolS1008 However, CAT is providing better service. For travel with several airlines, you can already drop your baggage at the station Wien Mitte when going to the airport. And you will not have to squeeze into an overcrowded train with no space for your baggage. Quality has its price, the decision is yours. By the way, comparing CAT to city train services in other cities like Stockholm, Oslo or London, CAT is still a bargain.
I disagree with most of your points!
Regarding Naschmarkt: there are actually some great and reasonably priced restaurants _around_ the Naschmarkt area, some even just across the street. (Fortunately the only one to really, _really_ avoid closed for good in 2021.)
I'll be in Vienna for the first time in October and I would LOVE it if you did a video on the best places to try sachertorte! Also really enjoying your videos so far and learning a lot of helpful tips; thank you!
From a local: Why not go to Hotel Sacher? Directly behind the Opera. Not the cheapest, but also no tourist rip-off. Generally, you get very good Sachertorten in most Viennese coffeehouses.
me too coming for the first time in october. and I kinda stuck i cant make a travel plan. i want to spend 5 days in the city and 5 in nature. anyone help?
@@Abo39FooR 1. day: City center - it's not that large and you can easily explore it in less than a day. 2. day: Walk from Schwedenplatz along Praterstraße to Praterstern, maybe take a ride in the iconic Riesenrad and explore the amazing park area. Travel on tram line 1 from the Hauptallee stop to Karlsplatz along Kai and Ringstraße and walk over to Belvedere, either visit the museum or just explore the gardens (or both) and finish your day with amazing spare ribs at Salmbräu on Rennweg. 3. day: Museums, if you want to. 4. day: More museums? Maybe just in the morning - in the afternoon you could walk up Josefstädterstraße towards Gürtel, maybe explore the 8. district a little more, have a break at Kaffee Hummel, and then walk on to Brunnenmarkt in the 16. district and have something to eat and/or several sundowners at any place on Yppenplatz. 5. day: Museumsquartier and a walk through the lovely Spittelberg area (amazing vegetarian food at Tian Bistro!) and some more exploring in the 7. district.
Did you find the best place? Going there tomorrow, any tips?
oh man it was so beautiful.
In vienna dont rent a car go with public transportation or on foot it is so beautiful.
I actually recommened scrolling around town on foot.
i want to shonburn palace it was worth it. the danub tower. the city center, the natrual history musem, danub island..you must go to a musical show. idk now if u can book cause you need to book before. try your best to book a musical conecrt in musikverein vienna, mozart.
I can't remember everything or write everything it will take a lot of time.
I also suggest going to salzburg and see the nature in wolfgangsee lake, schafberg top mountain, hellstatt, gosau lake, zelamsee, kabrun mountain. krimmil waterfalls.
if you rent a car i highly suggest going to grossglockner high alpine road. very beautiful.
the lakes in nature has some activites like the oldest salt mine (you would think it is boring but was so much fun) and some has mountains that you can go up to....etc always ask and check what kind of activities in every time.
i suggest if you want to go to wolfgangsee you go to st gilgen city then take the ship to the other city then take the train up schafberg mountain. just be sure to get your timing right so you you can spend time up the mountain. (i missed my ticket then i had only 20 minutes up the mountain)
etc etc etc
i suggest if you wanna go see the nature rent a car but never rent in vienna it is hard to drive there and public transport is great take the 24h or 1 week ticket. it so cheap.
the schnitzel is so yum and coffes and deserts are great. strudel , ulmdodler drink..
my spelling of most names are not that accurate but you get the jest of it.
yeah i almost forgot.. for night life go to the U4 club... (if you like techno music and.... having fun

This is the best video I ever found that deals with Vienna. He is on every single point he raises smack on. The way he presents his findings is short, to-the-point, and absolutely 100% correct.
And he focuses like a laser beam on the center of the "rip off" - right around the Vienna Opera - Mozart, Sacher, and Fiaker. It is beyond the usual tourist traps - to the point of being embarrassing for Vienna as a city.
Thanks for the support! ❤️
Many thanks!💯
You're welcome! Have you already been to Vienna 😊💯?
One more thing: Do not ride transit without a valid ticket. There are no fare barriers and bus and tram drivers to not check when you board, and most people just walk on, but that is because they already have a valid ticket. There are random fare inspections, and getting caught without a valid ticket will cost you €105, which they will want in cash immediately. And no, the excuse of “I am not from here, I didn’t know I needed a ticket” will not go very far
As a local I can approve of most of the tips. It's just the Sachertorte where I strongly disagree. There is no better one. The icing (Glasur) is unbeatable and I can especially recommend the Sacherwürfel (Sacher cubes)

I was born in Vienna and all of the things you mention are true. I don't really agree with your opinion on Naschmarkt though, some stalls are very expensive, yes, but there are other ones where you can make real bargains and they'll sometimes even let you try stuff for free. As a local that would be exactly my tips! Great work. I would include to avoid the Spanish Riding School. I don´t know any Austrian who has been there, it´s a tourist trap.
Hello Sascha! Excellent videos and really helpfull. Could you recommend us some places to try a piece of sachertorte except of Hotel Sacher?
Oida, well done!
I was told to take CAT which is 12 euros, then learned that S7 is 4 euros and goes exactly the same place but only a few minutes slower - I agree, never take CAT! Thanks for the video.
If you take the Railjet it’s even faster, depending on where you want to go!
The only advantage of the CAT from the city to the airport is that you can check in your luggage already at the city terminal (at least for some airlines). This can be done up to a day before your flight, so it might be worth it if you'd otherwise have to rent a locker for your suitcases.
But from the airport into the city there's literally just the 7 minutes (16 vs. 23) shorter ride - that's really not worth triple the ticket price. And if your destination in the city is not near the city terminal at Landstraße station you'd have to change trains anyways, which will nullify that time saving.
@@stephanweinbergerfrom the airport to the city can well be worth the money if you just missed the S-Bahn. You can either wait for half an hour or pay a bit more and take the CAT that departs 4mins after the S-Bahn has left. Saving half an hour from standing at some train platform when I'm tired after a flight? Shut up and take those additional €8, CAT ticket machine!
Yes, it's overpriced, but the hate on CAT is really overblown. There's definitely times when it's well worth taking it.
@@TheFeldhamster The CAT does not leave 4 minutes after the S-Bahn, it leaves 3 minutes _before_ the REX trains (which are just _barely_ slower than the CAT: 16 vs. 19 minutes to Wien Mitte), and 11 minutes _before_ the S-Bahn. Else it would have to overtake those trains en-route, which isn't possible on this line - hence why faster trains always leave before slower trains. But even if it did: if you're already late and then have to go to a different platform and buy a new ticket you probably wouldn't catch the CAT either.
Maybe you confused that with the RailJet trains, which do leave 5 minutes before the CAT; but those go a different route and would bring you to Wien Hauptbahnhof instead of Wien Mitte - if you want to go in that direction you wouldn't be taking the S-Bahn to begin with.
As I said, I do see the benefits going from the city to the airport with the luggage already checked in, but the other way around it's just a waste of money. Especially as there now are also the REX trains that only stop in Schwechat, Kaiserebersdorf and Rennweg, and then continue on to Praterstern and Floridsdorf - which (depending on where you need to go in the city) will actually save you even more travel time. The CAT only makes sense if you literally have accommodation right next to the Wien Mitte station, so you don't have to transfer again. If you have to do that, arriving 6 minutes earlier but then having a longer walk from the CAT terminal to the subway (or in fact back to the S-Bahn which you just tried to avoid), makes exactly zero difference.
Me as a local agree with everything.
The only thing I disagree would be Naschmarkt. If you know what you are looking for, for example some some some local cheese, beef or curry there you can get a pretty good deal…
But most things are for tourist and quite expansive indeed.
Thanks for sharing Horus! Of course Naschmarkt can be an awesome place! It’s just not as good as most guides would suggest 😅 thank you for your support, we always need locals to help us making better videos 👍🏻
True, not all is bad at Naschmarkt, especially if you are a good haggler.
Nice tips. Sounds very honest. Hope we will meet you soon in Vienna..
Excellent tips.
Glad you found them useful! What video do you want to see next? 😉
Do people still use cash (rather than cards or mobile banking) in Vienna and the rest of Austria? I know you mentioned that Vienna was a bit slow on tech, but what about now?
So most places will accept cards! But there are still a lot of places that don’t, usually they have signs in front of the restaurant but it is always adventagous if you have cash on you!
Very helpful tips indeed. Some of these things can be said about all Austria and Germany. They are very traditional in some ways. Don't even bother going there on a sunday, everything is closed except for churches and it's pretty annoying to be honest. And also there really are many cash only places even in the big cities, especially when it comes to food.
Die Sonntagsschließung der Geschäfte hat eher was mit Gewerkschaften zu tun als mit Katholizismus. Polen und Italien sind deutlich katholischer und dort haben die Geschäfte am Sonntag offen.
